Bradford City taking care with Garry Thompson hamstring

Garry Thompson’s stiff hamstring is keeping him out of City’s pre-season friendlies Garry Thompson’s stiff hamstring is keeping him out of City’s pre-season friendlies

Garry Thompson will have to wait a bit longer to play his first game for City.

Thompson will not be risked at Bray Wanderers on Saturday after sitting out the friendly wins at Tadcaster and Wexford Youths.

The former Morecambe and Scunthorpe frontman has been hampered by a tight hamstring he suffered during training at the end of last week.

Phil Parkinson insists it is no big concern but he does not want to aggravate the problem.

The City boss said: “Thommo won’t train until next week. We’re not going to play him on Saturday.

“He’s felt a bit of stiffness at the top of the hamstring and we’re being careful.

“Thommo’s been looking good. He’s a goal-scorer and a strong player and ideally you want him to play – but what can you do?

“We could have thrown him out there on Saturday and lost him for three or four weeks. This way we’ll make sure he can train again next week.”

Right back Stephen Darby is the other summer signing yet to feature for his new club. Kyel Reid and Ritchie Jones also missed Tuesday’s game as a precaution.

Parkinson said: “They are all nothing major, just a bit of tightness. If it was a league game, they may have played.

“ The lads we’ve had with us who were given the off-season (fitness) programmes are obviously ahead of those we’ve brought in.

“But the three or four lads who have missed bits of training are still working really hard.

“They are up at 7am in the swimming pool and having three sessions a day. It’s important we keep on top of their fitness as much as we can.”

Posters who post on here and those who just look in, will you have a listen to an anthem written by city fans for city fans. It is called Claret and Amber by Eyes Left With Jam on Top and can be heard on you tube. City fans deserve lots of things i'm sure but we definately should by now have our own anthem. A song for us all, regardless of our differing views. This song could become part of our identity. We would have a song that states exactly what we're about andIf you listen to it and imagine our home and our away support singing it, it is easy to see us drowning out our neighbours when we next meet. Also this anthem I feel, would be relevant as a entrance song in comparrison to 'Hi ho silver lining', which definately is not. What does everybody think. Ask your mates for their opinion. We have a new look kit, why not a inspiring new rallying anthem to help push our way to premotion this season.

Very infectious, total90. Should be adapted. Get it played on local radio. Hope it becomes a fans favourite.

"HAPPY VALLEYEXCESS ALL AREAS!!"

With eight new signings, the fans are 'licking their lips' in anticipation of seeing the new boys play in the first home game of the season in less than a month!

The new home strip (till July 2013-when 'normal service is resumed and we revert back to vertical stripes) has been revealed and bought in huge numbers by the fans (who buy every strip regardless!!) The away strip follows shortly (perhaps with sunglasses provided for those sensitive to glare!!)

The 'new' team has played a few friendlies (against teams who obligingly allowed themselves to be 'lambs to the slaughter'|) giving our strikers the chance to score at will!!

The lads have benfitted from some 'team bonding' including 'intensive group snore-in sessions' and other shared 'pursuits hinted at by Gary Jones but (best not discussed in detail here!!)

And of course, Ireland has provided some of its own diversions under the guises of 'Mr Guiness' and 'Mr Jamieson' and late night 'folk nights'!

But the REALLY important news that we've all been waiting for with tense antipation, has been withheld...until a 'slip' in today's 'T&A' piece above!!

I am referring of course to...the NICKNAMES of the new 'recruits!!!'

We now know Garry Thompson..is to be known as 'Tommo'!! But what about the others?!!

'HVEAA' can EXCLUSIVELY reveal...that ...

Gary Jones...is ........'JAZZA'!
Andrew Davies..is....... 'DAVO!'
Meredith ..is......... 'MERRIE'!
Darby..is... 'JOANAH'! (Derby/Joan!!)'
Conner ..is...............'
CONNIE'!
Atkinson..is........
..... 'ATKO!!'
McArdle..is......... 'GARGLE'!!

All the above have settled in well with the 'old boys' eg 'DUKIE', 'JONNY MAC', 'REIDDY', 'NAHKERS' etc and...now..we know what we need to shout at 'VP' when we want to encourage the players...when the action starts ..in August!!!!

eg"Brilliant clearance...'.LUKO'!

Cityman does right to poke fun at the use of nicknames buy the manager Mr Parkinson. That too me is a slight concern as a manager you have to keep a 'professional distance' from the players. If I am calling Davies - 'Davo' that has to make it harder for me to handout a 'rollicking'. Most successful managers have ruled with an element of professional distance from their players. A certain Mr Clough had it right when he insisted on calling his players by their full name - Teddy Sheringham ? old big head was having none of the Teddy thing - it was Edward Sheringham and did'nt he let him know it !. Lets drop the nicknames Mr Parkinson.

Or on the flip side it builds a stronger personal relationship with the players

No point reading anything into nicknames

Yes, definitely outsider. What a load of nonsense! Lots of the top managers use nicknames - or haven't you noticed? Clearly not. Stuart McCall was hammered because he used nicknames - like he was for wearing shorts. So Parky, keep on using the nicknames if you wish and ignore the nit-pickers (they will always find something to complain about)
