Promotion expert Alan Connell on why he opted for Bradford City

Alan Connell was Swindon's top-scorer last season Alan Connell was Swindon's top-scorer last season

Alan Connell is dreaming of making it back-to-back League Two promotions with City.

The former Swindon striker will meet his new team for the Ireland tour after signing a two-year deal yesterday.

Having top-scored for Paulo Di Canio’s title-winners last term, Connell believes he can match that success at Valley Parade.

He said: “Winning the league was a really big achievement and hopefully I can repeat that this season with Bradford.

“I want to be challenging up there in the top seven and I think we can do that with the squad we’ve got.”

Swindon paid around £115,000 to take Connell from Grimsby last year and he netted 13 times. But Di Canio made it clear that he would not be taking him into League One.

Connell added: “It’s something I didn’t see coming after such a good season. But football is a game of opinions and once I knew I wasn’t going to be part of it, I had to do what was right for myself.

“It’s been a strange period and I’ve been waiting for the right option to come along. I think Bradford City are the best club at this point of my career.

"I’ve had promotions from this league before with Bournemouth and Swindon and expectations were high at both clubs. Here it will be no different because this is the best supported club in the division.”

Phil Parkinson believes the 29-year-old will add something different to City’s strikeforce.

The City chief said: “He’s a very intelligent footballer. We did a lot of homework about Alan and everyone spoke highly of him as a player and character.

“It’s a good bit of business for us. He’s another good addition to the squad and slowly but surely we’re getting there.”

Connell is attracted by the prospect of giving City’s fanbase something to cheer.

He said: “To achieve success at Bradford would mean a lot to me personally. The club have been under-performing for quite a long time and if we could do something for the fans then it would be very special.

“The support was a big factor. I’m from London and the size of the crowd was a big aspect in me joining Bradford.”

his appearance record suggests a super sub, not many starts in his career tbh.
To suggest hes going to riva hanson and wells for the two striking roles could be wide of the mark.
seems a good signing for the club.
But again it seems ross hannah will struggle to find a place on the bench this year?
Shame if thats the case as that would be another signing thats not been given a chance to show what he can do

Don't worry about Hannah getting on the bench, with the re-introduction of 7 subs, I don't see any problems. One of them will be a keeper, 2 defenders, 2 midfielders (one likely to be a winger) and 2 forwards.
.
The signing of Connell can only be a good thing. I must confess that I don't really know much about him, but his record suggests he knows where the net is.
.
Now just to sign cover/competition for left-wing, attacking central midfield, full-back (especially left) and possibly another centre-back.

Thanks for your kind comments, both yesterday and again above. It was nice to read some praise and good wishes from a fan of another club, towards their previous player and his new club. Some of our fans can't wait to pour bile after a player departs our club.
.
You said it was great to hold your scarves aloft in memory of the Valley Parade fire disaster. How many were holding their scarves for that reason though? We were told STFC fans hold their scarves aloft after Paulo did it each time, in memory of his parents. Where were u sat? In our main stand or the block allocated to Town fans?

Again I do not no much about him, but I was expecting a target man type of striker do not get the impression he is this type of player. Good luck and I hope you bring your goal scoring boots with u.

As for the survey above, this is currently showing over 80% of us believe this current squad can challenge for promotion. I wonder what it will be like once our fans have actually been able to see some of the players play.
.
For example, what do we actually know about the likes of Meredith and Darby? Are Thompson and Atkinson going to be able to supply the ammuniton for our forwards? Will Connell turn his impressive goalscoring record into a positive at City (bearing in mind some STFC fans suggests he misses lots of chances)? Will GJones successfully slot into midfield alongside his namesake or Ricky?
.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not meaning to sound pessimistic, but we are being asked to vote on the strength of a squad, most of us know nothing about. I hope the T&A re-run the survey on the eve of our opening competitive game, to see if the results are the same then.
.
That said, I'm off to the bookies this afternoon to see what odds I can get on us getting into the play-offs.

You should get good odds at this stage of the Close Season. I do not think this Squad is ready for " Play-Off's " or at best Promotion.
*
It is a building Squad. To ensure 'Survival'. There are more Players to come ( Loans etc.).
*
But City will finish this coming Season in a much stronger position. I am looking to the Season After this forthcoming one, to achieve either 'Play Off's ' or possibly Promotion.

9/2 if you back us for promotion with Betfred and 20/ win 5/1 e.w if you back the e.w odds but this only pays if we finish in the top 3 the 9/2 looks good when we win promotion it will pay out. you could get promoted through play offs and miss out. William Hills also do the same odds.

Thanks for the details. Personally, as things stand, I can't see us getting into the top3 and still think we have a battle just to get into the top7. That's why I wanted odds on us just finishing in a play-off position.

I'll disagree with you though - every year there's a team that no-one rally talked about who just get it together and seem to come from nowhere. With three promotion spots surely we can have optimism that we can get into one of those. Come on City!!

As for paolo"s mum and dad yes it was tragic for him, as both died the first season he took charge and will never know the how great he will become as manager, it was more tragic after his dad died just before we was going to play plymouth away.
then we waited for him to come out after plymouth at home from the tunnel as promotion was achieved, yes waiting for him to punch the air and raise the scarf, as people dissapeared around 5.30pm it was only then his mum passed away just before plymouth home game.
He has just been given another 2 million budget ontop of the previous 4 million to get us to the championship.

You have a great player in AC. PDC never really liked him for some reason hence why he was warming the bench so many times last season. I think PDC wants players who can really be unfazed by big occasions and tbh AC did fluff a good couple of chances at Wembley and Ox***d away. But when he came on he rarely dissapointed. We really wanted Benson and Connell as our main front 2. Steven Darby was with us during 2009/10 season (when we beat Leeds 3-0 both ome and away) and I was surprised we didnt sign him after that. Good player imo.

Good luck next season!

Hannah #goalmachine (hahaha, let's not go there again mate) got 2, Connel joining the lads in Ireland so not played today, Hanson bobbed a header in, Reid, Davies, Wells and Swain the other scorers.

always good to get the first one out of the way, hopefully no knocks or pulls, on to the Emerald Isle to continue the build up. Can't wait for Aug 11th now.

t this time of year, the most important question is usually,"Can we challenge for promotion?" After eight ew signngs incl. a number of experienced players, the consensus amongst the vast majority of City supporters (as Obama would be proud of) is 'Yes We Can!!'

To be honest, 'hope' is the aspect most football fans try to hold on most, because without it where are we? Optimism too is to be found widely at this time of year and, after wo poor seasons, it says something about Bantms fans that we can still feel a suitable amount of 'optimism' particularly as we were all just as optimistic when first, Peter Taylor and then Peter Jackson were in charge. Posters on this very site were 'bloggng' in droves their optimism/hopes at Taylor's/Jackson's close season intakes. And yes, we've gone down the road of 'Using experience' and 'Giving Youth its Head' before but..to no avail.

Once again we find players who've 'done it' at other clubs coming to City to try to 'do it again.'
We read headlines and affirmatons from players new/old promising to give their 'all' and 'predicting succes.'

Will THIS finally be the season when City make a proper 'fist' of geting out of the 4th tier and back to the 3rd? (The lowest level that I personally believe wihin which a club of City's size/ from a city of Bradford's size should be playing)

In truth, so far 'hope/optimism is all we've got-even should The Bantams do well in their friendlies.

'PP' has 'played his hand' and we must wait until August/September/Oct
ober before we have a 'concrete clue.'

(Last year, Jacko had decided he'd made mistakes before September was out!So if it goes to October that'll be progress!!

So it's 'fingers/toes crossed' time and let's hope we get 'the rub of the green' with some better refereeing decisions, when things get under way. Surely, after 'PT', 'PJ'-with 'PP' ..it's 3rd time ..lucky??!!!

He would be an excellent signing. An intelligent guy who is keen to find a Club near his home and family. If we can beat other Clubs to his signature then I am really beginning to think this team is going places. There would be compensation involved in bringing Taiwo in however.

Another full blooded 100% midfielder who has performed well from a higher league and wants to play for a local Club surely has all the ingredients for a successful signing?

You only have to look at the T&A Poll on PP to see just how inadequate the City fans are.

Have you any facts to back up your claim that he's an "intelligent guy", lonnie?

Have you ever spoken to him?

What academic qualifications does he possess?

On what basis do you believe this team is going places? Please support your claims with facts.

It looks like there is a squad being assembled that could really make some progress in league two this season.
If not the play-offs then not far off but here is a prediction.....After a good season 2012/2013 where play-offs may or may not be reached, you have a bad start to season 2013/2014 and pp is sacked as a result of this - Another manager comes in promising to work miracles on no money and blames poor results on the previous manager.A frenetic close season with players coming and going gives the new man a chance to assemble his own squad to make another push for play-offs or promotion and so the above cycle is repeated again and again and again etc.
I am not criticising or singling out BCFC for bad choices from the directors but this is what happens EVERY season where the money issue becomes more and more prevalent.
I wish you well and really do hope you can prove me wrong....All the best for the new season.

Aaaaargh!!, just spent about half an hour putting some 'facts' together in response to your post and an 'internal error' has wiped it when I pressed the submit button. But, I might redo tomoz. In the meantime would you like to support your claim about the 'agreed contract' that you claim Compton had instead of regressing into a two year old with your previous response to what I thought was a reasonable question on a serious issue?

Oh, lonnie, you shouldn't be composing and submitting your posts at such ungodly hours. Your judgement is impaired and you are even having problems pressing the right button.

Try and get to bed early tonight with a Horlicks.

We do not raise our scarfs untill the end of the game after paolo comes onto the pitch and raises his aloft, then he punches the air,
we are a family club and i can assure you that every fan raised the scarf for the poor people of bradford on that tragic day, which i watched unfold on t.v. we are NOT leeds.
i can assure you that tears was streaming down my face on the day, this was nothing to do with paolo"s mum or dad. this was purely respect to you guys. those horrific scenes touched everyone.
He has just been given another 2 million budget ontop of the previous 4 million to get us to the championship.
the great times have come back to our club, and we are glad that useless danny wilson along with all the leeds wasters douglas, sheehan, luca

sheff unt favourites for our league. no chance under the worst manager i have seen in 42 years. remember he takes a club over gets them to the playoffs after we should have walked the league and sheff blew it last season when they should have walked it. so remember he always get the team relegated the following season as he did with sheff w,bristol c and us so if the guide book is to go by they will be relegation fodder this season.
still hope you go up and super alan will give you lots to shout about, but remember he wll miss some sitters so be patient
There are good and bad supporters for every team - I was very very upset when VP was on grandstand that day and the whole tragic incident unfolded on tv.
I have never disrespected BCFC fans for that event and never would,in fact i knew someone who died that day.
Yes,Leeds fans have possibly one of the worst reputation but that is a few hundred retards who continue to chant Munich songs at Man Utd for example.
There are Liverpool fans who do that as well - It is such a shame that this behaviour is still an issue when football has such a high profile that could be used to send positive messages throughout the world

Ok Pablo,
I have read a number of his interviews and it seems quite clear to me he fits a number of the different definitions and categories used for identifying intelligence eg: Interpersonal Intelligence; Bodily-Kinaesthetic Intelligence; Intra-personal Intelligence and Logical-Mathematical Intelligence to name just 4 that stood out to me based on what he said and what he is doing regarding his life and career.

No, I have never spoken to him. Nor did I ever speak to Albert Einstein or Galileo Galilei either.

Taiwo studied sports science and dropped out of Maths at A level. I don't know about any academic 'qualifications'. (By the way, is it your opinion that a person without an ‘academic qualification’ should be thought unintelligent?)

The players we signed from higher league teams and players from teams promoted from this league and into this league that are well spoken of by their fans gives me the basis for ‘beginning to THINK’ that if -IF- we are going to be adding THE LIKES OF Taiwo to those already here it encourages me to think we should improve dramatically on 18th place. We need a few more yet I think but the team on paper at least is an improvement on last season –IMO.

So to recap the ‘facts’: The measure of intelligence is not based purely on the measure of academic levels of study, however, I have provided two ‘A level ‘ subjects Taiwo studied for you along with other ‘intelligence’ types that he clearly fits into. I have also provided criteria for judging ‘better quality’ players being signed on a ‘permanent’ contract –as opposed to a loan- than the ones we have released. Unless of course you believe that most of those players that were released from a team that finished 18th in league 2 would have been better for the team than those that have signed from better performing Clubs and who performed well at those Clubs?

Sorry if I offended you fella, I was simply repeating what I had been told. After the last game of the season, I watched your fans celebrating with the players as your promotion party started. It was at that point that I got chatting to some STFC fans in the top tier of our main stand.
.
When I passed comment how choking it was to see your fans not only observing the minutes silence impeccably, but the sight of them holding up their scarves was truly brilliant, a couple said it was down to Di Canio and his own tribute to his parents. They then explained that as you are a family club, you shared Paulo's pain and so when he held his scarf aloft, so did u. Those fans then said you did this every time as a mark of respect.
.
Whatever the reason, it was fantastic that your fans joined us in our moment of sadness, reflection and history. Thank you
To stfc some say waynus looks like Andy Pipkin on a normal day he doesn't need the fancy dress. lol
Cheeky tw@t. How would you know what I looked like. You may think that was funny, but would you have smiled if I had said the same about you.
.
Poor taste...!

It's over 27 years since the disaster yet we still hear negative statements on how some fans behave the truth is the vast majority of fans and general public have shown great respect those few should not get the public airing that we have seen above. Lets move on and forget those mindless few. Football has so many good fans like S.T.F.C shown in his comments thank you for the kind gesture. I was there and still can't believe what happened. I wouldn't wish the injuries or loss on anyone.
