Flynn and Fagan leaving Bradford City

Michael Flynn and Craig Fagan have played their last games for City.

The club this afternoon announced that Flynn and Chris Mitchell have agreed to cancel their contracts and Fagan is in the process of doing so.

Flynn, who joined in August 2009, played 104 games and scored 14 goals.

Fagan netted eight in 35 games after joining in September - the third time he had teamed up with Phil Parkinson.

Mitchell, signed last summer from Falkirk, scored once in 16 appearances. He had not played since the JPT defeat at Oldham in December.

Craig Fagan is not a right midfielder and has looked poor in that position all season, was hoping we would stick him as a striker instead. For Flynn while he is just getting less and less games.

This is very bizarre. Fagan had been a regular under Parkinson and, even when others were questioning his place, PP stuck by him. Now he doesn't even get the opportunity of finishing the season with us.
.
As their contracts end in a couple of months anyway, are we going to save much by releasing them slightly early. That is, unless the players had been told they weren't part of the plans next season and so asked to leave early so they had a better chance of finding new clubs? If so, did they go without pay for April, May and June (and perhaps July too)? Is that where we save and thus benefit?
.
Can't say I'm surprised about Flynn and Mitchell, but I am with Fagan. I wish all three good luck in their future careers, especially Mitchell who never got a proper look in at City under PP and will now have to start all over again.

I was hoping Fagan would play upfront next year but he will have been on big money which PP can use on an actual winger. Fair enough I suppose considering season ticket sales haven't been great. Flynn has been injury prone and looked like his legs have gone this season so fair enough again. Good luck to both players.

Very happy Flynn and Fagan are leaving. Ive never liked Fagan and apart from a couple of games he has been poor. Granted he is not a right winger and its not his fault he played there but its a good decision to get rid.

Flynn I wish him the best but this season and last he's not been at his best and its time for new blood.

Mitchell I liked him as a player and I would've liked him to stay. At the beginning of the season I thought he was one of our better players but PP never liked what he saw and I dont know why. Hope he does well where ever he goes

Mitchell could deliver an excellent set piece but he lacked pace and was lightweight losing the ball too much. I agree that he didn't get too many first team chances though. Good luck to him too.

I think it's a shame they don't get the chance to be around next week. Flynn in particular has been a top pro for city and deserves a send off. I know some don't like fagan but I think he has brought something to the team with his aggression and no little nouse, we probably can't afford him though. Good luck to Mitchell too. A classy looking player on the ball with some excellent delivery. Hope they all do well wherever they go.

Sadly, Fagan brought nothing to the team. I've been saying that for months. Full marks to PP. I believe it's nothing to do with money. Team spirit is essential to success. Say no more!

I don't know how accurate any of this is but none of that would surprise me.

PP has the ability to attract quality players and I've every confidence in his ability.

The truth is we have a squad that is lingering at the foot of the basement division and have been there for 2 seasons now.

I've said all along that given a full pre-season and the complete pick of available free transfers to choose from, then PP can assemble a very good squad for next term.

There might be some surprises in the next few weeks but I wouldn't dwell on who leaves as I'm 100% convinced they'll be replaced by much better players.

I'd be slightly disappointed if Hannah went to leave as I think he has the potential to take the bottom two leagues by storm if only he could get a chance but like I said, I'm fully behind PP and if he manages to bring in the likes of Etuhu or Bogdanovic, then we're in for one hell of a season next year.

Totally agree and i too hope they all do well next season.
Note Chelsea (after trying it out against Arsenal with success) employed one of PP's tactics this week - bank of four plus bank of five !

Did you hear the Pulse today? Only 1200 season tickets sold. Also, a hint that Will Atkinson maybe his replacement. God help us!

Good luck guys, and thanks for your efforts albeit in differing quantities, and hope you get sorted with clubs soon enough. I think we'll miss Fagan's nous more than we think unless we can find another experienced player who can buy us time and set pieces. Flynn has been a great pro for us and I agree deserved a send off, as for Mitchell, I thought his corners & free kicks were as good as anyone I've seen for City in recent years, but was a little lost in open play. I hope we can build a tem around the centre mids we have and build on the strengths we have rather than wholesale changes in the summer. CTID

The saving will probably be only minimal. The pay offs will not be far short of what they'd have got had they sat tight and seen out their contracts.

Thought Flynn deserved better than being paid up and bombed out with 2 games to go, although I agree with the decision to let him go. His 1st season was his best when he was pinging shots at goal from all over the place and was always a threat. That side of his game seems to have all but disappeared now and injuries/lack of form seems to have taken its toll. He's been a great professional for us though.

Mitchell was never going to succeed under PP, despite having some ability he was one of those players that seemed to get frozen out despite our problems at right back/midfield and his performance of the season against Barnet.

Fagan was probably on good money so why he was played out of position is an odd one. He did briefly show what he was capable of but was duly put back out on the right wing again?, im sure his performances didnt justify his salary. Just hope the rumours that Will Atkinson is staying are off the mark.

He and Syers are at risk in my opinion. PP clearly doesn't fully rate either, with Bully coming off bench today to replace the injured Jones, instead of it being Syers. Jones, himself, is in and out of PP's sides, although I rate him as our best all-round central midfielder.
.
I also expect to see Ramsden, Branston, Davies, Kozluk, Williams, Atkinson, Dagnall and either one of the 2 first choice keepers to leave.
.
Will Seip be offered another deal? Either way, we need two new full-backs, a central defender, a right-footed winger and another than can play equally on either flank, plus at least another striker. Will that be one plus Stewart or maybe one plus Smalley?

There was a strong hint today that a deal may be in place for Atkinson to stay. Looks like PP could be playing him in desperation just to try and get one good performance to justify such a deal. If true, doesn't that give you a lot of confidence for next season?

It has just kicked off on twitter. Parkinson confirmed, after the game, that Flynn and Mitchell agreed to terminate contracts early & Fagan requested to leave as he wants to go back down south. He then said Williams and Stewart to leave too, followed by statement saying Syers had turned down deal in January and he only wants players that want to play for City.
.
Stewart was the first to reply when he implied that he knew nothing of PP's plan to terminate his contract. Syers then posted that he refuted the claims he had turned down a contract.
.
I wonder if he has had courtesy of speaking to Steve Williams yet? Before the game, Pulse radio interviewed Ramsden and asked what his contract position was. Rammers said he knew nothing and was just concentrating on playing and keeping fit. Surprise, surprise, Parkinson told Radio Leeds that he would offer contracts to Bully and Rammers at the end of the season. Does PP only do deals through the media??????
.
I thought people said Parkinson was nothing if not professional. It appears he is a 'nothing' then......!

I didn't hear the comment re Stewart or deals to be offered to Rammers and Bully.

The shambles down at VP goes from bad to worse.

Evidently, Branston was none too happy at being subbed today. Not a very happy ship, is it?

To be fair to PP, Branston had just allowed a ball to go over his head, allowin a player to run from deep and finish it off. In addition, according to PP's post-match interview, the back 4 didn't follow the instructions given to em at the break.
.
Agree it won't be a happy ship though, if he is tryin to force players out

Thanks for that Waynus. Yep some of it might not happen but like i said the text came from someone well connected at VP on Thursday night. Hope Jones stays personally.
All this is getting interesting ?? I'll try see if i can get more info...

PP certainly holds grudges against some and has undoubted favourites.

Syers not agreeing a contract perhaps gives the clue as to why he hardly ever starts a game now. We may lose a player of star quality because of this,

Mitchell is considered too light weight but has NEVER let the club down and has never been given a real chnace.

Faagan is played when he cannot beat a man, rarely gets decent crosses in:his corner and free kick ratio to gaols scored from thse is abysmal.

If Mitchell is lightweieght waht is Atkinson?

THERE ARE BIG PRBLEMS AT CITY LET THERE BE NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT

As worrying as the ins ad outs is the lack of ST sales, 1200 will not see enough generated to replace the outgoing players even if we have identified our targets already. The love of DS Atkinson will not help with this figure as just about every city fan I speak to about Atkinson is of the same opinion, he is dogs**t. Makes Fagan look like a prolific flying winger, which takes some doing.

Lot of silly over reactions as usual.

Dunno what happened with Stewart on twitter but Syers has already said it was a mix up and he has spoke with PP. If he turned down a new deal it clearly shows PP wants him, but he has also played pretty poor and had a lot of injuries this year.

Sad to lose Fagan, but wages were probably too high and he wanted to go home. Some people just refused to notice the good he could do. Yes he did have some bad games, but also was out of position almost every one of them. He looked very good at Barnet as a striker.

And i can't imagine he will go through with the Atkinson deal now.

Before joining City, Fagan was regularly selected as a winger. I understand he prefers to play as a striker, but City didn't play him out of position, relative to his previous career.

Sadly, Fagan brought nothing to the team. I've been saying that for months. Full marks to PP. I believe it's nothing to do with money. Team spirit is essential to success. Say no more!
No you are right; his 8 goals and several assists were of no use whatsoever.
Give it up Knight...! He has assisted just a few in 6mnths and most of his 8 goals were from the pen spot. Let's not try to make out he is prolific for a wing-man...!
.
He has been disappointing and that is a fact...!
Waynus, please try and learn the definition of fact. An expression of disappointment can only ever be based on ones personal OPINION and does not constitute a fact. Perhaps it is you who should give it up because I will not stop pointing out the idiotic and the moronic in some posters comments. A fact is that Fagan has scored 8 goals. A fact is that these goals count equally whether from the penalty spot or from 30 yards out. It stands therefore that Pablos statement that Fagan brought " nothing" to the team is 100% incorrect. Whether you consider his goals and assists to be sufficient is an entirely different matter and one that you are entitled to an opinion on; as I am entitled to an opinion of my own.

He has been disappointing and that is a fact...![/p]
That's put you in your place, KnightMcCall. You're fast becoming a laughing stock.[/p]
I think not; keep seeing what you want to...if that is that Fagan has brought "nothing" to the team then I am not the only one who thinks you are wrong. 8 goals will never constitue nothing you fool.
Thank God we have someone on here with some football nouse, Flynn has been a great servant to the club and Fagan whatever anyone says what position he was supposed to play as you say had plenty of aggression and very good hold player and slowing games down when needed. I think PP has had to let these players go to increase his chances of bringing in a right sided winger we have plenty in central midfield. I hope he gives the younger players a chance to show what they can do in closed season. We have not been producing enough young players of late. So thanks to all the out going players for their contribution just hope none come back to haunt us re: the Kevin Ellison episode. I think Will Atkinson has been a disappointment maybe he will be next to leave?

You don't play a RM as a holding player though. His aggression was rarely shown apart from arguing with officials. He didn't provide enough crosses, he hasn't scored enough goals, any RM would have contributed as much if not more and wouldn't have been on anything like the wages Fagan was on. Good business in getting rid of both he and Flynn.
Flynn has been a good servant but his form has dipped over the last two years and he isn't getting any younger, injuries etc take their toll and his position has been filled by equal if not better players.
