Bradford City: Luke O'Brien gives up home comforts to move to Exeter

Wearing a red and white shirt felt ‘weird’ says Luke O'Brien Wearing a red and white shirt felt ‘weird’ says Luke O'Brien

Luke O’Brien today opened a new chapter in his football career by admitting he had grown stale at Valley Parade.

O’Brien’s move to Exeter for the rest of the season ended an association with City that began when he was just eight.

Now 23, the left back believes that the change of scenery can revive his prospects after a difficult season out of the picture.

O’Brien said: “I’ve been at Bradford for 15 years and will always have very fond memories. I owe Stuart McCall for giving me my first chance and the managers since for playing me.

“But I needed that fresh challenge. I’ve been with them for so long, it’s easy to come to a bit of a standstill in my career.

“I was in a comfort zone at Bradford and this is a big change in my life.”

The former City player trained with his new team-mates for the first time yesterday and hopes to be in contention for Exeter’s trip to Bournemouth on Saturday.

He added: “It was weird just putting on a red and white shirt. It’s going to take a bit of getting used to."

Meanwhile, City have also released Nialle Rodney, who has joined Lincoln until the end of the season, and teenage midfielder Patrick Lacey as the cull of players on the club’s fringes continues.

Wishing you all the best Luke.
On another note may i express my disappointment on the death of the development squad. July 2011-Feb2012 rip. Long term planning i see is still our objective. We are truely a rudderless ship

Best for both the club and OB that he moved on. A excellent player at times but a new challenge will do him the world of good.
.
Just waiting for the morons to come on critisicing PP for ruining his career.
.
Good luck to Rodney - never looked like he had it to be honest but again some people will be on here saying that he was going to be a world beater like Compton. It always makes a good bit of light entertaiing whilst reading some posts on here.

A cull of players on the club's fringes eh Simon?

The development squad which we were promised would continue, but anyone who isn't a complete numpty could see would not last until the end of the season.

Instead we're back to short term loans and the familiar desperation. It's a good job we're used to it!

There will be moaners without a doubt, but people need to read the article.

OB himself said he'd gone stale and was in a "comfort zone". Who wants a player in that frame of mind?

Good luck to the lad.

Lacey. So what?

Rodney. Headless chicken when I saw him and haven't seen his loan clubs clambering to sign him.

Stewart. When did he have a good game. Once? Twice? No signs he was any good.

Compton. Turned us down.

Facts.

Usually what happens is a player goes out on loan - not let go of for free so the gaffers own cronies can play and taking on crap from the elland scum!!

This, then again, is the same manager that contrived in failing to get Charlton in to the play-offs, whilst now under a proper manager, sit 9 points clear and pretty at the top.

Why exactly was this pompous fool with a pretty poor managerial record employed when Colin Cooper got the team playing to their best potential ?.

sad to see him go but sometimes a move is just what is required to get the career going again.

seems as though we are getting rid of a few with more to follow when loan deals ended.

THE SOONER WE GET TO 50 POINTS THE BETTER:WILL THIS BE PROGRESS I DOUBT. seems to me that Flynn becoming ill has caused us more problems than we thought:allowing Fagan to play every game laos seems a poor option

Tyker, I am too waiting for the points figure to tick to the "safety" of 50!

When we were at 25 At New Year I thought we might be on track, but despite some pretty decent performances, we are now only at 27!

And these buggers at the bottom keep picking up points!

(Three days ago. In the dressing rooms 'PP' is having a chat with Luke O'Brien)

OB: So you're saying..if I stay on at 'VP' all I can look forward to..is an odd appearance in the reserves?!!

PP: Fraid so..OB! The thing is the team is much more 'settled' just now-we've got two left backs- and we're doing so 'well'- I can't change a winning line-up!!

OB: But...I thought we were near the bottom end of the league!!

PP: Purely superficial..Lookie.
..we're in a false position..we really should be ..I'd say just outside the top six!!

OB: But ..we seem ..to have been at the bottom end...for a long while!!

PP: A FALSE position..we'll be zipping up the league soon..

OB: ..but not with me eh!!

PP: Sorry...but the thing is ..there's been a 'glitsch' in your transfer!!

OB: what?

PP: A prob. but I can fix it..I can make sure you go to Exeter ..first team football...BEFORE the transfer window closes!!

OB: How...?

PP: Well.. if you could just say..when interviewed.." I was getting stale at City...and I wanted to leave..."

OB: But I ..I've been 15 years at City..supported them from the Kop.

PP: playing for the reserves....occasion

OB: .....Alright I'll do it...You're sure you can swing it?

Firstly, I would like to wish OB the very best of luck on his move to Exeter. It was clear right from the beginning that he wasn't in PP's plans. Secondly, these three certain HINTS are starting to creep in one or two posts: RELEGATION, BLUE SQUARE & ODSAL. It's all doom and gloom on this page and now some are worried about what other teams below City are doing. Let's forget the others and just concentrate on what we do. Like I said in my earlier posts, I still believe that we will finish mid-table.

As for O'B a new challenge maybe what he needs. However it was only recently that he was amongst our better players. he got promoted eventually ;-)

O'B was replaced by Threlfall under Taylor, overlooked by Jacko and then also Parkinson.

The defence has looked solid without OB at the back - A right footed right back is doing a better job.

As for Parkinson, you're right to pick on his record.

After all, he only guided Colchester to the championship - their highest position in their history.

He took over Charlton when bottom of the Championship with 8 games to go - only lost once and nearly pulled off miracle escape.

Pulled us from 2nd bottom to a team looking stronger every week, 2 defeats in 9.

Terrible record....

As for Cooper - his only game - Barnet at home. The only team worse than us at the time.

It is amazing how such a great manager as him, with a long track record of success has been overlooked by all 92 league clubs - but not of course you.

There's some proper WUM's using this site.

Makes me laugh that it's all about time and patience when it suits, yet when it comes to certain players, a judgement can be made off the back of a couple of substitute appearances.

Rodney played a handful of pre-season games, one of which I was fortunate enough to see at Park Avenue, and he was the best player on the pitch for City. he made two sub appearances in competitive games in the league totalling about 20 minutes, and got a good run out at Huddersfield in the JPT, where once again I thought he looked very competent in a strong team performance. His last action in a City shirt before we say goodbye....

i don't think it's the last we'll hear about Nialle Rodney. I do believe firmly he'll go on to bigger and better things. For me he's another one that got away, but then other experts who seem able to judge a player off 1 hour on the field in competitive matches will likely tell you otherwise.

The truth of the matter is that nobody can really make a judgement either way. all I can say is that he looked technically sound, pacey, and scored a couple of belting goals in what I saw of him. Clearly that's not enough to warrent being given a chance though.

I agree with what both of these commentators have said, concerning points achieved to date--and points left to achieve.
I do not think these comments are doom and gloom, nor negative thinking.
*
It is time for a serious reality check(as Stuart McCall used to say). To date City have achieved 27 points from 27 matches. There are 19 matches left to play.
*
Realisticaly, I do not expect any points from Saturdays match against Crawley. So that will leave 18 matches left to try and achieve the safety of 50 Points. 10 Away and 8 Home.
At the end of the Season (April/May) City play 4 Teams at the top end of the league, and two down at their level.
*
I can not see where the other 23 Points will be achieved, during the remainder of this Season.
Perhaps, and hopefully, less points will be needed to achieve saftey, this Season.

48 points would have done it last season and 45 the season before so not sure what the hang up with 50 points is.

However, City will be fine and in the words of Darth Vader "I find your lack of faith disturbing..."

It may have been clear to you Dann regarding Compton but from what I saw; there were flashes of talent but that went with some poor tracking back and some poor delivery.

In recent history City's best gaffers have been backroom staff; Kamara and Jewell, which is where Cooper was a perfect fit.

He's never even managed Cheltenham and if you view his record at Charlton as 'beyond pathetic' then you are beyond retarded. Wethers was backroom staff promoted to manager more recently than Kammy or Jewell - that was a great success wasn't it?

I feel thatComptons willingness to attack the full back and get crosses in and some very useful one's at that off-set his defensive lapses which imo were over-highlighted whilst other players weren't given the same scrutiny. I don't know where you have got the info from regarding Compton telling Parkinson he had an offer of an 18 month contract. I was under the impression thats what he wanted but we weren't prepared to give him. You've questioned where i and others have gotten our opinions from but that news is new to me. Whatever the fact is he turned our loan extension down and perhaps felt he deserved more. He wasn't in favour imo and it was only when he played so well in the cup games that PP was kinda forced to use him.

Overall your opinions are a lot like my own than perhaps you realise and/or want to admit.

PP spoke on Radio Leeds about what had been offered to Compton. PP said he offered him a deal until the end of the season on loan for which Compton turned down stating that he had the offer of an 18 month deal elsewhere.

I got the impression that PP thought Compton was calling his bluff to get himself an 18 month deal as he finished up by saying something along the lines of "well we will see what comes of his 18 month deal" which in fairness to PP seems to have been the case.

I do agree with you that Compton was never in favour but then theres a few players who seem to be in very similar positions to what Jack was ie the ones that are one mistake away from being fropped from the squad. Whatever he did he didnt ever seem to have the PP on his side...probably hence his little outburst after being dropped after his MOTM performance the game before. The fact is we have had a number of sub standard lesser players filling in ever since which is the slightly bemusing thing.

Hopefully with Reid back things may get back to normality and we can say goodbye to Haworth, although there still seems to be a question mark as to who plays LB tomorrow. I suspect he will have to recall Threlfall to move Siep to RB, much in the way PP "had" to play Compton, although I suspect Robbies cards are well and truly marked!

Cheers for that and i agree with your post. If this is the case its a strange way to manage for me, but ultimately parkinson is risking his job IF he is going for inferior players for other reasons than football one's. he knows he has an excuse this season thus can get away with things but next season fans won't be as forgiving. Problem is we the fans are the one's who feel the brunt when and if it goes wrong.
