City have ditched this year’s annual awards ceremony after deciding there was nothing worth celebrating.

The club traditionally hand out trophies to the best-performing players at a glitzy event in the final weeks of the season.

But they have pulled the plug as City potentially face up to their lowest league finish for 35 years.

Director of operations David Baldwin said: “We thought very carefully and discussed it with various supporters’ groups. We have to admit the general consensus is that we haven’t had much to celebrate this year.

“We didn’t feel it would be appropriate to hold an awards ceremony or presentation.”

City have suffered a slide in positions since being relegated to the bottom division in 2007, finishing tenth, 11th and then 14th last season.

They ended up 17th in the old Division Four in 1976, although that was countered by an unlikely run to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

City’s fans’ groups will get together instead to organise their own unofficial bash at the Woodbottom WMC in Baildon Bridge on Wednes-day, May 4.

Supporters’ Trust chairman Alan Carling said: “I fully understand the club’s decision. At the same time, many supporters will want to make their views known about the best-performing individual players over a disappointing season.

“And there is a general feeling that we need to talk about the last few seasons and the way ahead for the club.”

The club will still hold a thank-you dinner for sponsors the night before at Valley Parade, which the players are expected to attend.

Baldwin said: “We want to thank sponsors for their financial support.”
