Doherty mistake costs Bradford City any chance of pegging back Port Vale

City 0, Port Vale 2

There are plenty of issues surrounding City at the moment.

The worrying lack of points; the lack of goals; the lack of a settled side. There are the injuries to big-hitters Simon Ramsden and Michael Flynn and the lack of form from players capable of doing much more.

But one issue continues to cloud everything else at Valley Parade and it reared its ugly head once more during this fourth loss of a depressing start to the season.

Director Steve Longbottom had tried to take the bull by the horns in his boardroom notes in the programme entitled “To boo or not to boo”.

He laid out the case for both sides before coming up with the blindingly obvious conclusion that hounding your own team serves absolutely no purpose.

Peter Taylor would rather not get involved. He has already had his say on the matter after the Stevenage game.

He is reluctant to dive into the debate again but felt forced to do so after Tommy Doherty, the biggest name of his summer shopping haul, was singled out following Vale’s second goal.

The midfield playmaker had just claimed an unfortunate assist in a joke goal to nip City’s hopes of a fightback.

Doherty collected a bobbled pass facing his own goal and then hurried a lob wedge of a return back towards Jon McLaughlin. The keeper took a touch because of the height of the pass, miscontrolled badly and presented Justin Richards with the easiest of tap-ins.

It was a bad goal all round – and how the boo boys made sure Doherty knew it when he received the ball from the resulting kick-off.

Taylor was far from impressed, saying: “I’m 57 years of age and I can’t understand it where a midfield player who’s been outstanding in the game makes a mistake and then he’s going to get booed.

“If someone can explain to me how that’s going to help, then I’ll introduce booing in training. How’s that going to make the player feel the next time he comes and plays here?

“But I can’t say any more. Tommy Doherty had a superb game before that pass. He’s strong enough to handle it.”

Again it was a minority. But a minority who are clearly having an impact.

Of course, it’s far easier to be generous when you’ve won the game. Vale chief Micky Adams knew his team could prey on City’s nerves but felt the home supporters were good.

He also echoed Taylor’s pre-match thoughts that the players have got to handle it, saying: “This is the one big club in the division. There’s big support and you’ve got to live with that and deal with it.

“But Peter knows what he’s doing and doesn’t need any advice from me. He’s been there, seen it and done it and he’ll know what he needs.”

Saturday was much better than the last two home games. With a touch of fortune in front of goal, the scoring drought would have been sorted. But how Taylor must envy the attacking resources that Adams has at his disposal.

The Richards “boys” sound like a pair of wild-west gunslingers – and Marc and Justin certainly fire the bullets, with nine goals between them already. In contrast, no City player has got more than one.

At least they created chances this time, particularly in a flurry right at the end of the first half which should have sent them into the dressing room on level terms.

Marc Richards, rumoured to have been a Taylor target, had nodded Vale ahead with an unmarked header from a corner which City felt should never have been awarded after the same player had handled in the build-up.

It was one of several curious non-decisions from rookie referee David Coote, in his first proper season in the middle after years running the line. He had given a similarly baffling performance two years ago against Morecambe on his whistle-blowing debut.

Both teams also had strong shouts for penalties – City for another missed handball, while Vale were mystified as to how Luke O’Brien’s foul on Gary Roberts inside the box was only given as a free-kick on the edge.

Coming two minutes after the opening goal, a penalty then would surely have killed it. Instead, City grabbed the lifeline with arguably their best bit of pressure at home all season. In the league, anyhow.

Jake Speight once again represented the brightest spark with his in-yer-face energy. He skipped past Gareth Owen to slid in a cross which a panicky John McCombe hacked against his own bar.

David Syers, another one who looked up for the battle on the right side of midfield, drove across goal before Speight squandered City’s best chance.

Luke Oliver, for once not getting his shirt tugged, headed across the six-yard box and Speight looked certain to score at the far post. But instead of stooping to head, he tried to control and shoot and the ball bobbled up against his left arm – and the referee did not miss that one.

With Doherty getting more on the ball, City pushed and probed again after the break but there was no obvious sign of a recovery. The tempo picked up but the final options were still rushed and shots wayward.

O’Brien’s withdrawal in a double substitution produced a few groans, especially as Robbie Threlfall had been struggling behind him. Breaks from Syers and Speight came to nothing and the discontent in some quarters was building.

Doherty was robbed of possession by Roberts, who tried to imitate his Rotherham wonder goal from the halfway line with another dip from 50 yards at the same end. This time it sailed into the TL Dallas Stand. Then Vale’s hustling forced the comical coup de grace.

City, to their credit, kept going in the closing 15 minutes and should have pegged one back.

Substitute Louis Moult wriggled through a gap on the right wing before cutting back to Gareth Evans to shoot. The striker had not had a good afternoon in front of goal but this one looked bound for the net – until it smacked into the back of Speight a yard out.

The game finished with a minor push and shove in the tunnel involving Moult but Vale assistant Geoff Horsfield smoothed matters over before the row could escalate.

How City need to cut out the simmering argument with their more vocal critics before it gets out of hand. But nobody needs reminding there is only one way to do that.

The one way to stop the boo's would be to pull your fingers out and start winning. The amazing fact would be, you would hear chearing. Taylor cut the cr*p, stop blaming the fans who pay the wages, and start making them proud of the way we can and should play. Your subs on Saturday were a disgrace, Evans and Threllfall should have been subbed, tactick's are down to you, you need to improve Taylor, it starts from the top.

This issue repeatedly raised around boo-ing at VP is a joke - do you seriously think that the most pressing issue in this club is fans boo-ing?? What about the dross we are having to watch week in week out? What about our lack of ability to score any goals? These are the real issues.
For sure, boo-ing doesn't help and it is poor to boo your own team but hey-ho, you take the money and you takes yer chance.
That's the deal for professional footballers - people pay to come in and watch you work so like it or not, they are entitled to boo if they feel like it.
The thing that came to my mind on Saturday is that it is like watching the death of a club at the moment - we are going nowhere and all people at the club seem able to do is blame the fans.

I agree that winning would stop most of the booing but I do think there are a number of so-called supporters who would still boo. My son and I are trying to move seats as we sit in front of 4 idiots who, on Saturday, made foulmouthed negative comments about every City player from the moment we kicked off. Some people just seem to go to the games to have a go at the players - I'm sure it affects the players and I know it spolis my enjoyment of the game

I can't comment on Saturday's performance as I wasn't there (cricket commitments), but as I've posted elsewhere, I think our problems run far deeper than who's the manager, players, tactics etc.
To matters on the field, thankfully Stockport won Saturday so they won't be breaking their duck against us...but our next opponents at home, Gillingham....haven'
t won away since April 18th...2009!!!

when you see your teams players jog back, whilst vales are sprinting to the possibility of an opportunity due to a bizarre pass back, then you have a right to boo.

christ if thats them playing with a fear factor I would not want to see them laid back.

on another note if you pay with peanuts you get monkeys so who are we kidding!

we can only dream of paying the wages the mighty port vale pay their strikers. Maybe we should look for a marks and spencer shelf stacker this time and push the boat out again.

Spot on although most on here will disagree. Hardly brought anything to the table in the 2nd half. Looked busted and unfit and like Evans should have been subbed with half an hour left. You will now be given an education into how you don't know what your talking about. That Doherty is a great passer who has every right to be on the peripheral to wait for the ball to come to him so he can produce that killer pass! He certainly produced a killer pass alright!!! Jury is still out on our biggest signing of the summer!

I never saw our teams players jogging back and the cretins who boo haven't got a clue about support. How on earth does booing a player help the team,i'm no rocket scientist but that reaction must have a massive effect on most players that haven't got a skin as thick as a Rhinos arse.Get real, these fools are costing the club points.

its not the fans m8 that cost the club points, how dare you blame the fans. DO THE FANS ALL BLOW AT ONCE TO GET THE BALL OVER THE LINE?

IF IT WAS all the fans fault then why have we lost two games in two away too? Is it the fans fault there too?

get real! the fans pay good money to watch their team, the team may not be world beaters but all the fans want is commitment! End of!

I don't think it is a case of the 'fans' wont boo as long as the players give commitment. There was plenty of commitment last season and a lot of attacking entertaining football from City. The Team, and individual players, were regularly booed. Many of the fans wont be satisfied unless City are at least in the play-off positions or probably promoted. I have read on here many Times that a Club like Bradford City should be in the Championship. Why? because we play in a modern ground with a capacity of 25,000? or that we have 10,000 supporters? (including a few thousand booers and abusers), neither of which actually makes a difference in terms of a financial advantage over the Clubs we are competing against. The 10,000 fans could of course give us a significant advantage over the opposing Team if those 10,000 chose to really get behind the players or simply keep off their back when they make a mistake.
There has been too little money available for bringing in quality players and too many changes of manager at VP over the years. (And this season so far -in my opinion- there has been too many changes with the Team, but thats another story). PT has the task of getting City promoted THIS season and then, no doubt, we change Manager again. The sooner City supporters accept that a lack of money and unreasonable expectations are the main reasons for every manager in the last 10 years at City being regarded as a failure the better. Just to support my 'unreasonable expectation' argument: IF the Club could have afforded to sign Furman, Jones and Law, would McCall still have been as poor a Manager as many claimed? IF Thorne, Daley, Brandon, Flynn, Bullock, and Boulding had not had to miss large chunks of games under McCall's reign would he have been a better Manager? We have to appreciate the constraints that Managers are working under before we claim this or that Manager can't manage and we want a new one. PT needs luck, he needs money for a few quality players which isn't there and hasn't been there for a number of years, he needs Flynn and Ramsden back and he needs time and patience from supporters.

I may have mis-interpreted the interview, but I don't actually recall hearing Taylor say that the 'boo-boys' were the cause of our defeat! In fact, Taylor blamed all three of those responsible for the second goal, as they effectively killed off any chance of a comeback. Taylor questioned why Duff played a ball to Doherty, when facing his own goal, had a player breathing down his neck. He questioned why Doherty played the pass he did to McLaughlin and questioned why McLaughlin tried to control it, instead of booting it first time.
.
He also stated that we played better than we did in the other 2 home games and that he was surprised we had not scored. However, he also mentioned that we are still making mistakes and these are hurting us.
.
WHERE DOES HE BLAME THE CROWD FOR OUR DEFEAT????
.
It isn't just the booing though is it? Before their first goal, the crowd were behind us, but as soon as we conceded a sloppy goal, the chanting stopped and the atmosphere dropped. It picked up again in patches, but as soon as we conceded the dire 2nd goal, the abuse raining down from some sections was disgusting.
.
Do we only support our players when we are winning or playing well? Don't the players need our support MORE when things are not going well, rather than the other way around????
.
Personally, I thought we played well at times. Yes, some players are clearly off form and this is having an effect on the team, but it is harsh to say they didn't put in the effort. I'm hoping that a right winger will join us this week and help turn our fortunes around. I keep hearing this claim that we haven't got a player in the squad, capable of scoring 15 in a season. Didn't Evans & Hanson nearly hit that figure last season and didn't Speight net regularly, just one league below us? We have the goalscorers if they get the service.
.
Come on guys, get behind the players and support them instead of knocking them at any opportune moment! It isn't for a lack of effort afterall!

I have like many been a supporter for years and it summed it for me when my youngest son went to his first ever match heard the boos and said "this is not good daddy is it?" I said no but can only get better. Sadly it has not and only a few players have shown a change in providing real effort. Why after a full pre season and 7 matches in PT doesn't know the best team/formation/tacti
cs baffles me. PT the buck stops with you so get the fans singing not booing by addressing the real problem which is on the field of play.

I don't call the people who boo the team fans, half - witted spectators would be a better description, all those spectators blowing hot air would be a far better pass time for them. The team are commited ,as for the"fans pay their money"it's an excuse for some behaving like cretins and it's wearing a little thin, after all i pay my money to watch a game of football not have some burke who hasn't got a clue slagging the team i love off.

With regards Peter Taylor's comments on tho booing of Doherty, I think he misses the point, the booing from the section I am in was aimed at the the whole of the team, Dochertys mistake was the last straw.
How can a team that has been together for a number of months play like they don't know each other and the likes of Southend ( a team cobbled together at short notice) come to VP and wipe the floor with us.
On another point, were we in our corner the only ones who thought that Threlfall should have been taken off (poor display) and O'Brien put back into his best position, that decision also caused booing, I also dislike booing but sometimes that is all we can do, I certainly can't applaud the football that is on show.
I am not knocking Taylor, he is a good and proven Manager, this is totally down to the players

How can you make an all encompassing comment like that.
I, like some others, have "backed my team" for more than 50 years! Believe me, I have seen a lot of both thick AND thin.
My main "advantage" is that I don't actually see many live games any more, and therefore I can only commiserate with those who do, but I have probably already seen more than my fair share of dross at VP.
I do believe that higher than practical expectations don't help, and I also think that far too much expectation is being put on the return of Flynn & Ramsden to turn our season round. It could end in tears!

While I don't agree with it, the booing is a culmination of all the frustrations of the club underachieving in recent years. If somebody had said to me following our relegation, that we would spend 4 seasons in League 2, then I just wouldn't have believed them.

Booing though, will have much the same affect as your boss saying you are useless every day at work. It would make most people dread coming in and they wouldn't do their best work.
