Speight getting back in Bradford City fans’ good books

Jake Speight believes he is starting to show that City were right to stick by him during his troubled summer.

The energetic striker was the only positive of last week’s miserable defeat to Southend, pictured below.

Coming on the back of the Preston cup tie – when he scored his first goal for the club – Speight is winning over the doubters who questioned his arrival following the jail controversy.

Speight, who is expected to be rewarded with a start against Port Vale on Saturday, is confident he has put that difficult opening month behind him.

He said: “It was a little bit frustrating after what happened in pre-season. It took me a little while to get my head round certain things.

“But I was just thinking about getting settled in and back to playing football and I’m just about there now.

“There are parts of my game I need to improve on but I feel I’m doing what they brought me here for.”

Speight is not short of incentive as he tries to repay Peter Taylor for sticking by him. The 24-year-old also wants to prove how far he has come on since an initial failed attempt at league football with Sheffield United and Bury.

“I’ve got a lot to prove to myself in this league,” he added. “Other people have doubted me before and I’m still grateful to the gaffer and the club for supporting me.

“It was great to get that first goal against Preston last week. You need that as a striker, even if you’ve played well.

“After the Nottingham Forest game I started feeling better football-wise but I was lacking that little bit of sharpness. Then I had a couple of weeks out when I took a little knock, which was frustrating.

“But I’m naturally fit anyway and hopefully that’s there now so I can look forward to getting games under my belt and scoring more goals.”

I'm afraid this supporter won't forget how he dragged the clubs name through the gutter, no matter what he does on the pitch I'll not be cheering for him.

Oh dear, whatever happened to second chances! The guy is expressing his desire to repay all at the club on the pitch (and doing a half decent job of it at the moment) and he gets a response saying that he will not be cheered on! I really hope the players don't read these postings. He made a mistake, get over it! I for one hope that Jake improves with performances in order that we can forgive and forget and focus on his contribution in a Bradford City shirt, not his personal history.

comparing what Speight, Cantona, and Collymore did with Lee the sc#m bag Hughes is right out of order, the 1st 3 what they did is out of order but forgivable in my opinion over time.... as for Hughes well lets not go there. he should of never been allowed out of prison for at least 15 years, never mind been able to find a club that would employ him.... if he ever were to sign for City i for one like most other's would been going to VP again end of....

....i've just about got over Friday night and can just about think about start thinking Bradford City again.

If I was choosing the team i would Speight would be the first forward on my team sheet. You could argue we haven't seen enough of him but what i've seen he has bags of energy, plenty of effort, ability to cause defenders hassle, intelligence to run down the channels and most importanly hold the ball up and actually give midfielders a chance to get involved - unlike 2 other strikers we have playing at the minute.

So now i've got over Friday and had a quick moan i predict we will win the league...lol...i really wish i wasn't a city fan - can anybody name a club who constantly lets their fans down as much has city do?

so you think that true supporters of both Oldham and Nott's County have forgiven him for what he has done....? i'll beg to differ 442....
i have spoken to a few fans from both club's and have got a very different take on it.... the point i'm trying to make is what Speight did i can forgive him for, in time, it's up to him to prove to everybody connected with the club that he's worthy of the club's commitment which we gave him.....
everytime he pulls on our shirt, he's got to preform more so than anybody else,
i for one will support the player, as for forgiving him well like i say...

I'm sorry but I do know where 'theanorak' is coming from. Although I will be hoping he can deliver and I will cheer if he scores/plays well, I can understand why others are less likely to forgive.
.
Let's not forget, this "person" is a coward and a disgrace to men. He didn't get convicted of a petty crime, he wasn't drink driving or racing his car, HE BADLY BEAT UP HIS GIRLFRIEND!! Should we tollerate this kind of action from a player that could potentially be a role-model for our children??
.
As I say, I will applaud his goals/performances, but I won't "get behind him" as such (I certainly won't be chanting his name) and I don't think we should be slating any fan that doesn't want to "support" the player in this way.

We have had to watch some shockers at VP in the past but I can't remember such an inept and ineffective crowd as this lot.
I have been going down to City for 35 years and have been loyal throughout and yet I can honestly say that right now I do not want to go anymore.......I am so appalled at how poor we are and how cr*p this team is to watch.

On a different subject, today is transfer deadline day. Prior to Friday night's game, Derm Tanner asked Taylor is he would be entering the market before the close. Taylor advised it would depend on how we performed in that game - we all know how the game ended!

Do we expect to see any coming (or goings) today? What positions would you ideally like to see us fill and what player(s) would you like to fill that position?

Rochdale are a div 2 team div 1 at best so not really let their fans down, i dont think.....maybe sheff weds are the only fans that have to put up more then us given their size.

to other posts this is nowhere close tot the worse team we have everhad......much better then we've had when we were filled with loan players when dropping down the leagues.
i still beleive we have a decent team but need to get a good run going - althouhg has admitted before i dont rate evans or hanson too much which doesn't help when our front men can't trap a f a r t.

Couldn't make it to the 2 cup games and by all accounts we played very well.
The games I have seen so far (made the sorry trip to Shrewsbury!) have been dreadful. We don't look like we have a goal in us.

I was once a huge fan of Daley (even with his poor crosses and even poorer shooting!) but he really does look like a passenger at the moment and one who has no clue where he should be playing.

Speight beat up a woman in what can only be described as a cowardly attack: perhaps the first sentence was more apt and it could have been worse. However I think, at the time, we were more concerned with his deceit in not telling City he was due in court:at that time we were not made aware of his offence nad that has come out recently.

that all said:the club have given him the benefit of the doubt, the courts have sentenced him ( in my view a very very lenient offence for the nature of the offence) and one assumes he is complying with the sentence imposed.

he is serving his sentence, he has been fined by the club so TIME TO MOVE ON: he is a city player wearing teh claret and amber so i will support him but will NEVER respect him.

I was hoping some on here would 'debate' this matter and suggest who they would like to see come in/leave, either permanently or on loan. Sadly, it appears nobody is interested.
.
I was also hoping that 'fatbloke' or 'J4CKO' would keep us up to date with who was/wasn't at training today or whether anyone left early.
.
For the record, I'm still not convinced we need to sign another striker, but (although time is ticking away), I'm still hopeful an exciting right-winger will be arriving before the weekend. Daley, Evans, Moult, nor Speight are the answer to filling this position, so I hope Taylor can reignite some excitement by bringing in a player with pace and the ability to deliver a cross.
.
Fingers crossed.... hell no, everything crossed!

I responded by saying that Rochdale must let their fans down every season. They start with optimism that 'this season will be theirs", only to see it end the same way as the season before.
.
Your response to that was that, "Rochdale are a div 2 team div 1 at best so not really let their fans down". This to me indicates that because they have never experienced real success, their fans shouldn't have high expectations, thereby not 'being let down'.

Just wondering, all these "supporters" who are shouting from the roof tops that they will never "support" Speight, yes they will cheer his goals and revel in any benifits he brings to the club, yet still not "supporting" him cos he is guilty of ethnic cleansing... oh sorry getting P!ssed and lashing out at some bimbo who prob had it comming (and yes i am a girl and don't condone violence of any sort but sometimes it happens if u push someone enough with some ppl)... So I ask did all you anti Speight brigade, also not support one of the best players in my memory (27yrs worth) Peter Beagrie?? or even Collymore?? Or maybe u didn't support Jamie Lawence either or any other player with a less than perfect past. Do u all hate McCall after he got thrown off a train for being drunk and arguing a train fair (that was just after he left us) Just wondered if you have often had to not support our players, or we are making an exception with Speight cos it was still not storted and in the past enough when we got him. If you hated Beags just as much then fine. But if ur honest with ur selves, u'll prob just realise u have double standards for whatever reason, OR ur being a bit harsh and really should get over it and concentrate on the more important things like getting behind the WHOLE team.
Good Call!!!
the point with all the players you have named Bigstar is that we knew there history, the issues with Speight and (also his agent) is that he forgot to mention the court case to the manager and to the club, if he was up for shoplifting or something that you wouldn't normally associate a prison sentence with then fair enough you could understand then hiding it. what he did was wrong (and to label the girl in question a Bimbo is very harsh, do you know her? i doubt it very much) the fact he took the advice of his agent against doing what the vast majority of us as fans would have wanted (and that was for him and his agent to tell the truth). Well he didn't and now he's got much ground to make up.... how many of our fans would be willing to walk out in front of 10,000+ fans after that coming out not many. the lad must be bricking it big time when the ball comes anywhere near him, for me the lads done ok, hopefully he'll improve, show some remorse for what he did, show the club the same respect we have shown him. he'll know the history of our club and what we as fans expect from all our players given what we have been through. Just like Beagrie and the great Jamie Lawrence did. to be even mentioned in the same breath he'll have to do well......!!
sec word lady-wave....!! although i'm not sure how much of a lady you are!!

I just know with some men, it's prob not that hard to push them hard enough that they would want to swing for u. It depends on the guy, I have sometimes pushed my man to the point where many other would have given me a deserving clout round the ear. Not saying its right, or she deserved it, but having watched Jeremy Kyle on the odd occasion its pretty clear that some which maybe have had diff up bringings to me have not been blessed with the skills u need to not lash out.

we don't know the situation is i dont know she was a bimbo, and as much as i'm sure alot of very nice girls go out with footballers, the 1s we know about in the press often arent portrayed in a good light if u know what i mean, altho i doubt a L2 player would attract a gold digger esqu Jordan type.... But my point being we dont know the details, some ppl have read whatever in the sun, did they also believe that there is a Ratzilla population taking over Bradford estates? He got off, which prob suggests it wasn't as bad as it was made out. We'll never know til he does well enough to bring out a book. Most ppl arent saying it was cos it happened with us, its cos what he did when really we have no clue of the circumstances or actual facts.

PT and the club have punished him etc and seemingly got over what ever he did why can't everyone else. He's not asking for ur daughters hand in marriage, or anything that will directly affect u or other personally, he just wants to get on with footie, I think he should be given the chance to do just that without ppl constanly dragging up his past, however recent it may be. We've all done stupid things in the heat of the moment on varing levels, u live and hopefully learn.

Fingers crossed there will be another book out entitled Prison to the Premiership in roughly 5yrs!!!!

I can assure u i wont be buying it tho!!!.... dont have time to read....

I just sit in the whats done is done camp, and as "technically" the fortunes of bradford city do not directly effect me personnally (altho BCFC does stress me out and somewhat rule my life), I will judge the players with what they do on the pitch. As long as it doesn't effect their game and results then i don't really care what they get up to. Like i said, i'm not marrying them. When i saw pics of Matt Clarke and Conlon hammered on facebook with some of my friends and added that to the performances, i wasn't too impressed with that, but still didn't feel the urge to slag em off publicly at the time.

And even if they are crap, unless it is connected with being stupid off the pitch, i am quite likely to keep the faith in them or keep my silence at risk or being unsupportive until the manager loses faith and gives them the boot.

Dont get me wrong if JS had come on and looked lazy/crap then i would wonder why we were bothering with the baggage, but the 3 times i've seen him play and he is already a contender to pip Omar to the position of my fave player, which must be good.

I just give ppl a second chance, unless they are like a murderer or something. I'm sure if he had beat her to a pulp he would have had to serve more than a week, the system can't be that bad.

Speight for player of the season!!! ;-)

Jamie Lawrence a BCFC legend ( the lad deposited Lee Bowyer into the midland road stand) and is one of my all time favourite players strayed off the straight and narrow.... in my opinion Speight should be given a second chance just like Jamie had, from what i've seen of him both in ability and attitude on the pitch he deserves that.

I think that horse has wings fella, your arrogance is breathtaking, don't put yourself above the law,he's done his time according to the law of the land, the judge decided what went down deserved a week inside end of story.Speights attitude on the park has been spot on since he's come out so i don't see a problem. No one is squeeky clean,i'm sure we've all got stuff we'd rather keep in house except you of course Waynus 71 lol.

Not at all fella. I'm no saint and I'm far from perfect. However, I'm not "arrogant" and I'm certainly not a wife-beater!
.
For the record, his judge sentenced him to 12 weeks in prison. It was the appeal judge that changed that sentence and released him on community service.
.
What does make me laugh is that Speight is constantly defended by some for beating up his ex. He knew what he was doing and because he 'blew his top' he badly beat her up. The amusing part is that some of those that defend Speight's actions were the first to hammer Lee Hughes for his conviction.
.
Speight knowingly beat up his ex, whilst Hughes made a massive mistake that will live with him for the rest of his life. Hughes didn't go to that party knowing he would lose control of his vehicle and hit another car, killing the driver. It was an accident, NOT deliberate like Speight's actions.
.
Why is one a hated figure for a grave mistake, whilst the other is defended for deliberately badly beating up a woman???
.
And just as intriguing, why does this view mean I'm 'arrogant' and 'God-like'???

I've only got your word that you've not beaten a women, for all i know you could be a crazed maniac with a god fixation, thinking every thing you say is correct lol..for me Speight has paid his dues to society and should be left alone to get on with his career,to insinuate that anyone who holds this view condones beating women is beyond contempt..For me this whole thread is mountain out of mole hill stuff, part of being human is that we've all made mistakes in the past but unlike Speight we haven't had the nationwide murdoch news treatment.

"part of being human is that we've all made mistakes in the past".
.
True, but my mistakes don't involve beating my wife up!! In fact, other than car offences such as speeding, I have never been in trouble with the law. So yes, I do class my 'mistakes' differently to that of Speight.
.
As for "Speight should be left alone to get on with his career, to insinuate that anyone who holds this view condones beating women is beyond contempt", I agree. My 'condone' violence comment was aimed at the "bimbo" poster further up.
.
Finally, yes this has been blown out of proportion. If I can remind you of what started this thread, 'theanorak' said he wouldn't be cheering on Speight because of his actions. That poster was then riddiculed for his view, so I offered him some support by saying I appreciate where he is coming from. I advised I would cheer on any goals, but wouldn't reserve praise for him and certainly won't be chanting his name from the terraces. You and others then turned on my for my view.
.
Why can't you just accept that some of us have different morals and that we are not all cloned? I don't agree with your views on this and vice versa. It doesn't make either of us any less a Bradford City fan!!

Having read quite a few of your comments,i'd say you also have trouble excepting other peoples views lol,the anoracks thread starter was hardly worth a reply in my view. The murdoch press would have a field day with your driving record if it served them to run the story,by the time they'd finished with you, you'd probably be classed as a danger to society and want you banned from driving for life.If there was any drink driving offence, the same x by 10.This whole thread's a joke, the woman involved made a few bob out of it so she's obviously no shrinking violet and before you mount up again that doesn't mean i condone beating women. When you said "defended by some" that seems to imply more than one poster defending his actions, that doesn't include me or anyone else, besides the post you mentioned,so what you implied in your last post doesn't make alot of sense.Your last paragraph is garbage in my book ,once again you seem to think your morals are superior,in my case you couldn't be more wrong.

You are obviously going to argue until you are blue in the face and I'm not wasting any more of my time.

I will end my post on this thread by saying, I can look at myself in the mirror, so I'm happy with my morals, thank you very much!

I'm simply putting my point of view across,if you don't like that ..tough,on this occasion i don't agree with your view point and i'm sure we'll be crossing swords on occasions in the future. Morals have nothing to do with my argument,Speights done his time, now it's time to move on,he certainly looks like he has the football ability to put this episode behind him..
