Blame me for defeat, says Bantams boss Taylor

Frustrated Peter Taylor took the blame for City’s woeful Valley Parade loss to South-end last night.

The Bantams were beaten 2-0 – their third loss in four in the league – and were second best throughout a depressing game.

It was a total contrast to the way they had played against Preston three days before. And afterwards, the City chief held up his hand to take the rap.

Taylor said: “I’m the one that’s put the players together and when they play like that, it’s my fault.

I’ve signed the majority of players so the way we’ve played is down to me. We’ve got no excuses

Peter Taylor

“If we were flying now and being the best team in the country, then I’d be lording it. I’d be saying that’s down to me.

“I’ve signed the majority of players so the way we’ve played is down to me. We’ve got no excuses.

“We’re too inconsistent and it’s not good enough. Southend had extra-time on Tuesday like ourselves but they looked hungrier, fitter and better than us.”

Taylor admitted he was baffled at his side’s failure to string decent displays together. They rarely tested the Southend goal even when the visitors were down to ten men after defender Sean Clohessy’s red card.

“It was totally opposite to Tuesday night. But I don’t really know what performance we are going to give at the minute.

“I don’t think anybody’s got a clue how we are going to perform and who’s going to turn up and be confident or who’s going to be nervous.

“I would have thought we’d be (confident) but come kick-off time it doesn’t seem to work out that way.

“We seem to need to have a fantastic start for us to be really confident but it hasn’t happened this year.”

Half-time substitute Jake Speight injected some passion into City’s play. Having shaken off his knee injury, the striker is set to be rewarded with a full game against Port Vale next week.

Taylor said: “He was very close to starting and we thought he had an hour in him. He showed a couple of glimpses.

“That won’t do him any harm so he’ll have a good week.”

I do blame you Taylor - the midfield was far too strung out. can't beleive your starting with Daley. its like having 10 men!

Absolutely spot on Victor. I was a big fan of Daley a couple of seasons back. He offered nothing last night & it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if that was his last game in a City shirt. How he stayed on when 3 subs were made is beyond me. His efforts were an insult to the thousands of fans who have put in a full working week and were looking forward to some Friday night football. An experienced front man is needed quickly to allow Doherty's know how to have some effect

Why can't we get a coach who unlike my predictions can be inconsitantly consistant, in a world that is consitantly inconsistant?

The problem is far far worse then just starting with Daley.....if I was in the changing room when Bullock was selected as captain I would have lost all respect for the gaffer....

for a few season now teams have come to VP and bullied us in midfield. we then revert to floating it up front (Williams needs a rocket up his bum). even if the delivery was any good and Hanson won a few headers there was noone anywhere near him. you might be right about the front man but how much service have we given them over the last few seasons?

We need 4 genuine midfield player who can get from box to box and will put the opposition under pressure. I was dissapointed with Doherty. he had got talent but did he really look interesteted?
bring back Chris Brandon!

Dear God, please bring back Stuart McGod tomorrow, I never called for his head or slated him (I agreed it was time he went though), please forgive all us City fans especially the ones who did slate him, because I have never seen anything as bad as I witnessed last night, for 50 mins anyhow as I had to leave could not take anymore.
From the first minute I saw Bully walk out with the armband on to the second they score their second it was awful.
Please help
Amen.

cant be bothered even thinking about last night cos i might slash my wrists but for me it's always going to be difficult when you have 2 front players i.e. hanson & evans who couldn't trap a ****, i can't remember once when they actually controlled it and started an attack has for daley he has been useless for last 12 months at least, i cant help but laugh whenhe gets the ball and crowds start getting excited.
i wouldn't be surprised if Moult was on the phone to Stoke begging them to let him go back, he and doherty are the only 2 players who actually have a footballing brain - moult shouldn't be used out wide and doherty will surely be wishing he accepted hight league offers.
it beggers belief how hanson & evans are prefered up top to moult - the poor guy hasn't even had an opportunity to score yet.
i still think we'll win the league though...lol

I'm glad I'm too far away to go watch but I'm suffering all the same, listening to each game on the Bantams Player.

I saw Daley a couple of seasons back at Aldershot, when I was in Hampshire and I couldn't see what all the fuss is/was about.

He's lazy, doesn't track back, weak in a tackle, cannot control the ball and wastes possession more times than not, plus he cannot cross - sign me up Taylor, I cannot run, I'm over weight and I'd last about 10 minutes but I'll still give you more from a game than Daley does.

He's a luxury, we cannot afford.

Having said that, Evans too isn't a winger and so IMO we desperately need 2 people out wide with a bit of pace and quality.

Midfield will improve when Flynn comes back and by all accounts, as I've listened to every minute of every game so far, we're wasting possession in the middle of the park and not getting the tackles in when we're without the ball.

Bullock isn't doing too well by all accounts and we'd do well to get a few signings in before Tuesday to compensate for the lack of quality.

Trouble is, most free signings have been snapped up and there were tons of quality up for grabs before the season started, which makes you wonder why Taylor wasn't in there first.

Was he backed as well as we were lead to believe?

I doubt it very much - otherwise we wouldn't have been trialling Non league cast offs - Speight the exception, since he's the only one showing any glimpses of quality or guts.

Matt Harold, a free from Wycombe is an excellent CF, who albeit doesn't score too many, he is a great target man with vision - he sets up tons of goals and obviously Taylor knows him well.

I was surprised to see he'd been released but once I saw he was available, I was sure he'd be in City colours before too long, however, he's now a Shrewsbury player and from the sounds of it - he's doing remarkably well.

Southend, who all but one of their players were signed just a few weeks back (you don't hear them complaining about gelling - which shouldn't be an excuse to not give your all), have some good players for our league and considering that they have even less money to spend than City - and that's saying something, they still managed to pull off some good deals, notably Craig Easton, who's had lots of Championship football under his belt, he ran the midfield last night with the sort of performance City fans can only dream about, not only a great play-maker but he lead like a general and consitently won the ball back for them - not to mention Grant, who ripped us to shreds and scored their second was another freebie.

It's crying over spilt milk now I guess as this is the team we have for the season ahead.

The best part of last night, for me, was hearing 'Jimmy' Jewell, who was co-commentating - if only.

You don't think, day to day, how little decisions impact yours and other peoples lives but Geoffrey Richmond, what were you thinking you big fat 'Thomas the Tank Engine' controller, when you sacked Jewell after he miraculously kept us in the Premiership.

It wasn't a fluke either because he then went and did it again, getting Wigan to the promised land and keeping them up too but unlike Richmond, he had the backing of the board and now look at Wigan, how many consecutive seasons have they been in the elite?

Had Jewell hadn't have been fired, with money in his pocket for the second season, there'd be a good chance now, that we would still be up there established and this past ten years would never have happened - how I wish I was living in the parrelel universe in which City succeed.

Where's bonehead Richmond now?

Look at how many thousands of lives you've affected with you reckless, impulsive and most ridiculous decision in sporting history.

Bankrupt and on the brink I hope he is but it was great to hear Jimmy last night and he still believes we can get it right and that Taylor is the right man for the job, which incidently, I do too.

So, for now, I will keep my Bantams player subscription and plead with you all to keep the faith.

We're lacking in certain areas but then again, this is league 2 - so are most teams and with a bit of confidence our boys and Taylor will get it right.

Jewell pointed out, that he almost got fired in the season we got promoted because we started badly then too, so let's hope it's an omen and a good result against the Vale next Saturday and we can get back on track.

Those who regularly post on the site do make sound observations about team performances. The club's enlistment of so many new players was always going to pose headaches for the manager and after the early games it would seem that:
We have lots of options in defence, with the makings of a more than decent 2nd division unit
We have chaos in midfield where if Docherty's playmaking is to bear fruit we have to secure far more input, energy, pressing and running from any other 3/4 players. Syars and Adeyemi are learning their trade and can't be expected to fulfil this role immediately, though there is no faulting their commitment. Flynn is badly missed and it is this unit in the team that is most dysfunctional.
We also have wide players who are converted strikers. Evans is not a winger and neither is Moult. It's difficult to tell what Daley is at the moment apart from his usual unpredictability. Hanson, Speight and Moult are all capable, but without the support from a coherent and energetic mid field, and little delivery coming in from the flanks, there's little hope of bossing games and less expectation of winning many.

Too right Taylor it's your fault! In pre-season you asked for the pitch to be re-laid.....you got it, bigger player budget......you got it, more overnight stops......you got it and then.....the team that you picked serves up the dross that we had to endure last night. Thanks very much. Stay out of the media and start earning your money.

Daley just hasn`t been the same since his injury.Hanson could develop into a good player but unfortunately every time he plays we loose any sense of a football brain we have and just lump the ball up to him. as stated above, Evans and Moult are not wide players. Moult has had great reviews but as a FRONT man. When are we going to start playing people in their correct positions

with the few extra pound mccall needed and I mean a few pound we could have had law and furman in the middle. Short sighted City again. All this nonsense we have a bigger players budget is dross. Just ask Colbeck, Hanson what they were getting under mccall. Our players answer to the chairman not the manager and that is all wrong. Thats why we will never get anywhere with him throwing his weight around.

Another disappointing display but there's a long way to go & we do have our 2 best players out. I still believe, with the managers record, we will be in the mix come the back end of the season. How many times does a team go on a good run in the new year & end up getting promotion, after a bad start. It still doesn't make last night any better, but it is very early to be so pessimistic.

I do think we need a striker like Peter Thorne though, even when we were playing badly, he could pull a goal or two out of the bag.

The problem is we have too many under performing players , Daley had a lazy game Tuesday and played the same last night , on the right side we needed the overlapping full back to get the balls in the box like Ramsden does so well , but how Lewis Hunt is a pro footballer is beyond me , no pace , cant tackle and just doesnt look fit enough , why didnt Taylor take Lewis Hunt off ?

We just lack real width , Daley isnt the answer and takes too long to get balls into the box , on the other wing we seem to be playing Moult who just cant play that position and other than Luke O Brien we just dont get enough balls into the box.

The width is a real concern because its making the ball go backwards to Luke Oliver and a big hoof upfield.

Last night was awful , we cant turn into a bad side overnight and hope we cure whatever it is for inform Port Vale next weekend

From my point of view I think the problem lies with the formation we play the players we have are not suited to playing 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 for me we should play either the simple 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 with wingbacks obrien should be on the left side as we all know he loves getting forward and until rambo is fit and i think adeyami should be on the right with williams duff and oliver as the back 3
In the midfield 3 I would have doherty syers and until flynn fit bully should be in there as for upfront hanson looks out of soughts and evans for all his workrate his first touch is poor therfore moult and speight would get the nod from me.
I know its early days and I do believe taylor will get things right I just think by riverting to 4-4-2 or in my opinion 3-5-2 with wingbacks would be more of a success.
so this my team to play port vale next sat.

Can anyone say they were surprised at another dire display?

We've got competition for every position. The problem is, however, that we've got 22+ average/poor players. Far better to have a smaller, but better quality, squad.

More worryingly, PT, needlessly handed out longer term contracts, so we're stuck with this lot!

Taylor has all the credentials so what's gone wrong, I don't know but there is a real risk our season will be over by the end of September.

It's refreshing for a manager to accept responsibility instead of the usual catalogue of excuses, and while his team tinkerings haven't helped, the players have also to take some share of the blame, as they seem petrified of playing in a City shirt.

If you can't handle the pressure of expectation at this level, then you are not going to amount to much.

There are a number of posters on here with views of how and why it has started badly. Some are more positive than others (i.e. we are still gelling, missing key players etc and will turn things around). However, what we can all agree on it that Friday night was simply not good enough and we have to improve fast.
.
Personally, I didn't think Doherty did too much wrong. He looked for the ball all the time and, despite all his passes, he only gavve the ball away a couple of times. Hunt doesn't get forward enough for a full-back and Ramsden should go straight back into the team, when fit.
.
Oliver has obviously been told not to boot it long. I noticed he looked for a simple pass every time on Friday night and Doherty in partiular. Shame Williams didn't follow suit as he just booted it into the channels. This is a good idea as long as your wide men are looking/ready for it, but they simply looked surprised he was doing it.
.
As for an attacking unit, other than O'Brien, I thought the rest were rubbish on the night. None were able to keep the ball or create anything. It wasn't until Speight was introduced that we actually had something to get excited about. He reminds me of Michael Owen (obviously nowhere near as good, but a similar style). He is small player with lots of upper-body strength and pace. He managed to hold the ball up well and wriggled free from the defence time and time again.
.
But thenagain, I think I must have been watching a different game. I could have sworn that Daley was on the left of midfield and Evans on the right, with Hanson & Moult up front. Yes, Moult and Evans kept switching, but it was Moult in the middle more often than not.... or at least that is how I saw it from the TL Dallas (and they were playing towards us in the first half).
.
I would be interested in what other TL Dallas fans thought about the positions of our front four.
.
Finally, I wouldn't be surprised to see Daley dropped. For me, he was the worst player on the pitch. Loss of pace, form and confidence means we are carrying a player at the moment. Why on earth did Taylor leave him on? No doubt I will be riticised by some Daley-lovers for these comments but when was his last good game? In fact, when was his last cross?
.
Is that okay for you 'Gspot'???????
