CITY 0 SOUTHEND 2

Awful City slumped to their third league loss of the season against a Southend side celebrating their first away win in 2010.

It was a grim night for the Bantams, who looked a shadow of the team that had matched Preston for so long three days earlier.

They never recovered after slack marking allowed Barry Corr to convert Anthony Grant's pass after 16 minutes.

Peter Taylor used all three substitutes at half-time in a bid to gee them up after the break and Jake Speight at least offered a bit of bite.

But any hopes of a fightback were dashed when they fell further behind nine minutes after the break as Grant drove in from 25 yards.

Southend defender Sean Clohessy was sent off near the end but the ten men did not come under any pressure.

And once again there were a few boos at the final whistle.

Long hard season ahead - forget any idea of promotion - Taylor has just got 20 or so samey mediocre players.
Even the great Stuart didn't make three subs at half time - PT does not know what he's doing!
Conference here we come.

mmmmmmmmm: do the players want PT as manager?

triple substitutions at half time are indicative of what?

players unwilling? players unable? players who don't care?

there are several questions to be addressed about this squad?

can it be turned around? yes there is plenty of time but things have to improve rapidly.

10,000 supporters tonight, ask them all to same the best 11 and the formation, and you'll get 10,001 diff answers. ive seen all 4 home games. its jeckyll and hyde stuff, 2 fantastic cup performances followed by 2 inept, league 2 games. theres plenty of time to put things right, but we seem to have collection of players but not a team with any shape or pattern yet.
players who have failed to impress the most must be daley and hunt. thoughts?

The great Stuart left it until 5 minutes before the end of the match to make his 1st sub. At least Taylor can see when it isn't working and does something about it.

He also admitted that the performance was naff on the radio afterwards and was honest about what was wrong. Stuart was always wishy washy.

Sadly, the players are letting him down.

Time for Daley to jog on.

I disagree with you pal...Doherty had a good game for us tonight and speight played well when he come on too.
o'brien put a good shift in too.
For some reason or other we are just not klicking together but i am still confident that we will get it right very soon. Keep the faith!

Williams distribution was appalling, and the forwards don't help by not making runs into space. Doherty is a class player finding it difficult to pick out players who are too static and they don't make moves towards the player with the ball. Sorry Omar, but for whatever reason you are NOT contributing enough to keep your place, we were effectively playing with 10 men in the second half. We have to stop conceding soft goals, start scoring some goals and start pressurising the opposing player with the ball earlier otherwise every Team we play will look like Brazil.

First game of the season for me. Going by tonights performance wish it was the last! What a horror show. What does Mr big reputation Taylor do with this lot in training? Can't pass, can't tackle, no movement, no passion with the exception of a couple. I despair. Is this really rock bottom? How the hell did we beat Forest? Don't know where the next win is going to come from? Hope Flynn will be back soon cos we had nothing in midfield. Daley is a hapless passenger. Please do jog on!!! So miserable!

What was that phrase Alan Hansen used about England after their 4-1 drubbing to the Germans-Oh yes, '9 levels below abysmal!' That just about summed up City in this match!! I really believed when 'PT' came to the club that we could 'progress' but this was as bad/worse as the stuff we were producing some years ago!! The Southend players even began 'showboating' in the 2nd half-so confident were they about winning here, and in truth it probably could have been 0-4 or 0-5!! OK, Southend's numbers 6, 7 and 12 were outstanding-in fact I would have swapped any four of ours for those three players, but there just didn't seem a lot of clue in City's play about what to do at all here!! (their number 6 twice in a few mins nearly scored from the same 'trick' no doubt practised during training, where he came in behind the defence 'on the blind side!' I say 'side' but truly, all sides of the City defence looked 'blind' or at least fast asleep!!)
Then we had the 'desperate' three subs straight after half time which amazingly left the totally ineffectual Omar Daley still on the pitch!! Sadly, Daley seems a shadow of the player he was prior to his bad injury, making me wonder if he'll ever be that player again!! Speight looked busy, Hansen (subbed) again looked nowhere near as good as last season and the defence looked, well..wobbly!! To cap it all, Southend were 'sporting enough' to get one of their players sent off to give us a chance!! But it would have taken another two/three off to make much difference for a City side that looked (worringly) 'all over the place', and 'up the creek without a paddle!' What now Mr T?

Can anybody say they think this is better than last season?
.
The results may be the same, but the level of effort and performance is much, much worse.
.
And IMO it is down to 2 very simple things which Colin To..erm sorry I mean Peter Taylor seems glaringly stubborn to change.
1) Stick to 442. This is what the players know and is what gives a side the best balance. This 433 trying to be too clever is utter tosh and has got us nowhere so far.
2) Keep the players in who performed well in the previous game. How the heck can you expect them to work hard and fight for the shirt when they get dropped after playing well. Not exactly a moral booster
.
All this coupled with the most ludicrous tactical decision ever to lump Oliver up front just because they'd had a man sent off makes me wonder if PT does have any idea what he's doing.
.
The majority of the players in this squad were either already here, or had been here on loan last season so pre-season should be quite enough to get them looking like they can even recognise which shirt they play in. What exactly have we worked on in training all Summer?!
.
Quite simply the most uninspiring drivel I can remember at VP.

Oh god how poor are we i will give you several reasons why .
Non-league players can improve with quality players around them ,we dont have any!
Doherty some people thought he played well tonight (was i at a different game) was so poor thought we had resigned Ian Banks.
large squad with no quality or foundation
As i have said before we dont have a 20 goal a season striker we have a bunch of one in four if lucky strikers.
The quicker we can get rid of Del boy lawn and get a bit of Real money into the club the sooner the better or we could be doing a Grimsby and those who think we wont get your heads out of the sand .

Before we all panic lets just remember how jewell faired in his first matches. Not any better but we then found a groove and everything fell into place. I'm not saying this will happen but they is a chance. We have to try and remain positive we have played well at times in the cup and once peter finds his best team we will go on a roll. I predict a 4 -0 win next week for city as the fightback and season begins. CTID

'get a bit of Real money into the club'. Nice idea, and how do you suggest that is done? Come on don't be shy, let's know how this never-before-thought

True to form, ever generous City oblige against a side that has been on a long winless run, like we have done so many times in the past.

Any advantage that we should get from having a large home support, is quickly evaporated by continuously being slow out of the blocks, allowing the opposition to grow in confidence, in turn silencing the crowd.

If we are going to play 4-4-2 then we need at least another winger. I thought O'B did ok for a full back playing out wide, but he is hardly going to beat a man, while Daley just looked totally disinterested, and isn't worthy of a place on that performance.

I don't think Taylor has helped with his squad rotation. It's debatable whether it actually works in the Premiership, but at this level it is asking far too much. Let's just decide on our best formation and stick to it, thus keeping a settled side.

Disappointing though it was, I'm not overly concerned as there is a long way to go. People were saying similar things at this stage last season, and we went on something like a 12 match unbeaten run.

The players though, seemed burdened by the pressure of expectation and playing in front of a big crowd. The booing doesn't help, as it makes them afraid of wanting the ball, reluctant to try things, and they retreat into a shell. If I were them though, I'd want to prove my doubters wrong, and show them I have the bottle and skill to succeed at this level.

Speight rightly received appreciative applause, as at least he tried to make things happen.

Taylor just has to get the players believing in themselves, and performing like we know they can, as the side put out should have been more than capable of beating the likes of Southend.

Well said that man. After 4 league games everybody has hit the panic button. Last nights performance was better than the Stevenage game. I know that's not saying much but lets keep a sense of perspective on the situation, it's still August for gods sake.
One thing that concerns me is the form of Omar. When 90% of his game was based on pace we only have 10% left when he loses that.
Doherty started to look good. Once players learn where to make runs for his passes he will look better still. At the moment he is playing a game above the standard of those around him.

As for selling hanson and putting funds with the neilson funds, will these funds be put into the same place as the colbeck funds? If so, would rather keep the player.

wake up city fans! best paid team in the league nonsense does not wash with those with two or more brain cells.

The problem is not taylor, nor the players. Its the calibre the managers budget will allow. Dont blame a player who can only full fill what he can achieve. If you want a 25 goal a season pro you dont get the local co-op worker.

If you hate the paper, boycott it, but dont be asking others to follow you. I agree, in some respects to what that the EDL stand for. But they are just as extreme as some of the muslims they are directing their bile towards. Painting all with the same brush is just wrong. I thought Steve Williams was dreadful on Friday. When he came into the side as a young player he looked like he had real potential. It was sad to see him now just hoofing the ball downfield and nor being able to dominate in the air. He has had two or three managers so it is not just Taylor. But it does show that the club does not bring on its young players. Until we get a decent youth policy we will never get anywhere. Think long term and build a side based on potential.

the players have no confidence:when Taylor got Wycombe up I believe he did it with a very small squad of players; maybe players who have half decent games are getting dropped whilst others such as Daley are constantly picked.

It's just a thought but rotation system at this level is unwise.

Exactly Tyker. What on earth do some players have to do to get regular games. Until Taylor tries a formation and sticks to XI players, we will get nowhere fast.
.
Against PNE, both Adeyemi and Sayers were very good. Why were they both left out on Friday night? Why did Bully come straight back in? If we are to play Doherty, we have to have legs around him, doing his dirty work. This isn't something that Bully can do consistently - he simply doesn't have the legs. I'm not convinced Flynn will be the answer either. Sayers & Adeyemi have to start if Doherty is playing.
.
As for the wings, Evans isn't the answer and Daley is just poor. His only attribute was his pace and now he doesn't even have that. He used to be able to knock the ball yards in front of himself and catch it before the defender got across. Now he can't do that and he knows it, whih basically means he no longer has a game plan. No crosses, no mazy runs, no end product!! Time to be dropped.
.
Perhaps Taylor can get in touch with a specialist sprinter coach and try to help Daley get his short burst of pace back????

What utter rubbish the season City went up to the Premier league in their first 4 game they lost and still went up. remember the famous on the pitch half-time team talk by Paul Jewel? The team performed great against Preston so to say were not good enough for this league and none league bound is over reacting after only four games gone. PT can't win if he leaves subs on the bench to the last minute as Stuart did consitently he would get slated as often Stuart did. brings subs on early and gets slated. Stuarts gone get used to it!!! Stuart would agree I'm sure get behind the team it's the managers job to barrack the players not the fans.
Apart from the hiding Notts county gave us they had a indifferent season only going top late on.
