Bradford City urged to turn cup form into points

Peter Taylor wants City to deliver another dose of the Carling Cup spirit at home to Southend tonight.

Taylor hailed the display in Tuesday’s extra-time loss to Preston as the best so far.

And he expects his team to turn that into three points when his home-town club visit Valley Parade.

The City boss said: “I want to see a repeat of that, not a repeat of the first ten minutes of Torquay or certain things that happened against Stevenage.

“I want to see us play with more quality more times than not.

“They have got to take a lot of pleasure from the way they played against Preston. I know the supporters got their money’s worth.

“I don’t really look at websites but my daughter tells me that people were quite pleased with what they saw.

“We’ve got to keep that going now and let’s go and put in a good run.”

Tom Adeyemi and Gareth Evans have both shaken off knocks from midweek and Robbie Threlfall is back from suspension, leaving Taylor with plenty of options to pick from. He predicted there will be some unhappy faces.

“There were players left out after good performances against Torquay who were thinking they would probably be starting tonight.

“But I’ve got to say that I might have changed my mind on certain things because there were some very good displays on Tuesday, the best so far by some of the players.

“It’s a very hard selection this time and I’ve got to leave some good players out. But that means we’ll have a healthy season.”

Struggling Southend, who were relegated last season, have had a year of fighting financial fires. Taylor has huge sympathy for the club he grew up supporting and later played for and managed.

“The most important thing is that the club remains,” he added. “You don’t want to go into administration.

“I think the chairman is a very shrewd man, he knows what he’s doing and he’s always come up with the money when it’s been needed, whether it be a tax bill or whatever.

“He knows it’s hard work at the minute because of the current (financial) climate but I’m sure his plans are still in place.

“If they get that new stadium with a big supermarket chain behind them, then it will be a very different football club.”

New Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock has hastily cobbled together a squad with 17 summer signings after 13 left. They have failed to win in the league so far but took Premier League Wolves to extra-time on Tuesday before going down 2-1 to a last-minute goal.

Taylor said: “Let’s be honest, League Two performances will be more inconsistent than the Premier boys, where nine times out of ten you know what you’re going to get.

“Not being unkind but we’re probably 18-handicapper golfers who hit a great shot every now and again, then mess up the next one.

“That’s how you are even if you’ve got your players all the time. If you’ve got them in late as Paul has, then they are probably going to be even more inconsistent.

“Steve Tilson did brilliantly there and I always said whoever replaced him would have to be experienced and Paul Sturrock is that.

“It’s not an easy situation but hopefully there have been a few more guarantees on the new players that Paul has signed.

“But we’re expecting a tough game. We saw them play against Wolves the other night and they did exceptionally well.”

Southend are still looking for their first away win of the year. The last victory on the road was at Leyton Orient on December 28.

The visitors have stayed in the north since Tuesday and prepared for tonight by using Huddersfield’s training ground.

Former City keeper Rhys Evans is likely to be on the bench on his return to Valley Parade.

my thoughts exactly has i was reading that - teams have a nasty habit of breaking unbeaten records at VP..lol..just look at the lad from Shrewsbury who bagged a hat trick against us -apparently he couldn't hit a barn door last season and against us he has 3 chances and bags all three.
having said that i do predict a good win tonight so i can enjoy my beerage after the game that little more.

I just hope PT sticks to his words. There were some excellent performances on Tuesday night by players who have only played a bit part this season. As previously posted we created more chances on Tues night than we have in 3 league games so far this season. Why? (Its only my opinion) because we were without Hanson. We played the ball around and created chances. When Hanson is on the pitch we are one dimensional and just lump it to him on the hope someone will latch onto the flick on (if he can win the ball in the first place !). Moving on OB has been excellent in the last 2 games. When he came on at Torquay we looked a more threatening team even with 10 men. If anyone deserves his place he does.

Strangely enough almost the exact same article appears in the Saarrfend Echo. So both teams need a win and both Managers in the article talk of inconsistencies and both teams (according to articles and reader's comments) performed well in their last match....so... ≡3pts + (↨*☺) = ??? Hope it's not a 0-0, players falling down in exhaustion. You might have thought that the march on Saturday would have been moved to accommodate our local team who need an extra day to recover..but that's another story I guess, and one we probably aren't allowed to comment on. Anyway, good luck lads.

Why wasn't our game just switched to Sunday afternoon? That gives us an extra day to recover and then doesn't affect the EDL march/rally and the efforts to police this properly.

Peter Taylor mentions consistency and the lack of it at our level. He may have a point, but it doesn't help when he is constantly changing his side.
.
I thought the pre-season games were played to get fitness and help him work out his best side. We have played 3 league games and 2 cup matches and we are still no closer to knowing our best XI.
.
I hope Taylor sticks with the promise of keeping players in the side that performed so well on Tuesday. As 'Lonnie' said on another story, players should be given a run in the side unless fitness or continuous poor form prevails.
.
Personally, I would start with 10 of the 11 that started Tuesday's game, with just Rehman being replaced with Hunt. I like Rehman and he perhaps would be unfortunate to lose his place after playing so well on Tuesday. However, Southend's left winger is very pacey and that is one area that Zesh struggles. Hunt is a little quicker and is the only reason I would recall him.

on a none moaning note my i say that tonight is the ideal time to play this match, off to wembley along with three other city fans early tomorrow morning and not back 'til sunday night. The rugby league final will keep a lot of sports fans away from soccer grounds.

how many goals do we score in the first few minutes of a game; hardly any.

Let's get at the opposition from the off:let's go at them hard and get the crowd going.

If it means booting it high into the are for the first ten minutes in an effort to get a goal so be it.

Goals get crowds going and fast starts are required at VP especially this game as Southend have had an arduous week

Tonight's match really is a 'must win'!
With five wins/five defeats in recent competitive matches, morale (amongst fans) is not exactly high, so another reverse, will be as welcome as the usual Bank Holiday weather!!
Tonight, please let's ..
a) ..'have a go' from the start! We're at home, we should be attacking against a side that cannot be considered one of League Two's best.
b) ..'keep eleven men on the park' ie no more bad-mouthing refs/silly fouls in the penalty area/'howlers' etc.
c)..play our 'best team' or the one 'PT' thinks is the best team. (If he knows which that is?!!-according to 'T&A' he's still not sure!!)
Above all, we MUST take the three pts!!

Who is this in relation to? Can't remember the last person to see red for bad-mouthing a ref. Wasn't it Deano?

Couldn't agree more, we don't seem to be getting at teams quickly at home, we really need to have a good start & not let them settle. A good start, an early goal & the crowd will respond & with very few away fans tonight, this could make it very uncomfortable for Southend & hopefully lead to a good home win.

As for the match being played tonight, I would prefer a Sunday game but with two live Sky matches on Sunday I can understand why it's been switched to tonight. At least both teams are in the same position, having played two hours on Tuesday.

Anyone shed any light on the post mentioning the Southampton manager being up here?! Maybe the Zesh move is back on?
