Taylor: Home win would be heaven-sent

Peter Taylor wants City to treat the home fans tomorrow before enjoying the “heaven” of a blank week.

Aldershot’s visit is only the second game at Valley Parade since Taylor took charge.

After five away trips in his first three weeks, the Bantams boss is hoping his players will enjoy their home comforts.

And with no midweek match to come, there is the carrot of a bonus day off to recharge the batteries.

A lot of clubs round the country would have found it tough if they’d had as many games as us lately

Taylor said: “It’s been hard for the players to have five of the last six matches away. Having three on the spin takes it out of you.

“Not having a game next week will be heaven. The boys may need an extra day off as well because they’ve had a lot of football.

“A lot of clubs round the country would have found it tough if they’d had as many games as us lately.”

Taylor is ready to freshen it up after Tuesday’s loss at Port Vale. He had stuck with the same side that beat Rotherham but there were clear signs of a heavy legs.

Taylor added: “It’s something I’m thinking about. I don’t think it was a good performance and some of that was down to fitness.”

City’s win over Darlington a fortnight ago was their first in nine attempts at Valley Parade stretching back to October. With seven home games left, Taylor believes there is time to straighten that record out.

“Being realistic about it, this season has been a very frustrating one for everybody connected with the club; the players, the supporters, the management and the board.

“We’re desperate to try to show people we are slowly improving. We are looking forward to playing at home again and hopefully we can put in a good performance.

“You’re never ever going to change things straight away and become a great team overnight but I’m quite pleased with the progress that is being made. "We’ve had three wins in the six matches I’ve been here. If we keep that going for the rest of the season and win half of the matches, then I’ll be quite pleased with that – and if we can get some wins at home it would be even better.

“The players showed last time that they weren’t afraid to play at home. They didn’t play with any fear and that’s the most important thing.”

Peter Thorne has suffered another injury setback after complaining of a sore knee. City are waiting for the results of a scan.

The Bantams face Alder-shot for the second time in 11 days. The Shots won 1-0 at the Recreation Ground and Taylor predicts another tight tussle.

“Aldershot have been to-gether a long time and the manager has gone in there and done well,” he said.

“We had a very close encounter down there and I expect another one tomorrow. But we are at home and I’m looking for us to carry on improving.”

Shots boss Kevin Dillon felt the win over City was the most complete performance of his four months in the hot-seat.

Four days later, the same side delivered the worst against Burton. Having hit the fringes of the play-offs by beating Chesterfield and the Bantams, Aldershot blew up at home to the league new boys.

Dillon’s response was to drag his players in for extra training ahead of their trek north.

He said: “The players are getting it too easy. We prepare correctly, with hotel stays and the like, but the players are so inconsistent.”

Taylor will have noted with interest that both Burton goals came from corners, City’s new forte.

Dillon, a no-nonsense player in his time, is also expecting a lot better from his midfield after they got “bullied” last week.

“We have some good footballers but they think a tackle is something you use for fishing,” he said.

Dillon has signed two free agents to cover gaps in goal and at left back.

Jamie Young, who played under Taylor for Wycombe last season, comes in as back-up to Venezuelan goal-keeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz after on-loan Stephen Henderson returned to Bristol City. And former Lincoln defender Aaron Brown has joined to rep-lace injured Andy Sandell.

With the "Play Off's" A far gone conclusion, I can't wait for next season to get underway... Automatic promotion??

Todays footballers should be fitter than ever. in 1961-62 a drinking club at valley parade produced-without the dreaded loanee system in place-a run that took them from bottom place in feb. until may 2nd. a total of 19 matches in 12 weeks producing 15 wins 2 draws and only 2 defeats. the point i am making is this, do not blame travel, fatigue or inadequate training facilities just bring back the smoking and drinking club instead.

Whilst wanting City always to win, I think from now until the end of the season, it is the PERFORMANCES that really count!! Too many at home this year have been dire and I'd like to see that change, starting tomorrow. Promotion may have gone, but every City player is now playing for his place, the loan players need to prove themselves and so too does Peter Taylor!! So that should mean 100% effort from everyone and a positive 'go for it' attitude. Come on City-we're all right behind you!!

I am looking forward to tyker's thoughts on Taylor believing 'fitness' was a contributing factor in the poor performance at Port Vale and then planning to give the players a day off. Should they be running over the fields at Northcliffe instead of the 'day off' tyker? It is a well known saying (to some!) that when the performance deteriorates 'amateurs' train harder but 'professionals' rest. The Team as a whole has never given less than 100% effort in the many games I have watched this season. We just need more 'knowledge' of how to 'win' games being embedded into the players Psyche in order to get the results from the undoubted (IMO anyway) work-rate. I am sure Taylor will make progress on the psyche side the longer he has with the players. Anyone who is 'fit' enough can run around for 90 minutes but not have much effect on the game. It's 'knowing what to do' that will make a difference as much as just pure effort. When Taylor combines both we will see more consistency from the Team and from individuals along the lines of effect and efficiency. Those that are incapable of or not prepared to 'learn' will not be carried in my opinion. I think Omar will be given a little slack regarding the comeback from injury, but I think Taylor will also expect Omar to turn his undoubted ability into something providing 'an end result' on a regular basis before too much longer.

Omar and Jacobs should be shown the door along with the rest of the dead wood.

I predict City to come away with a positive result tomorrow at home.

come on PT. Ensure the players are fully fit (fitter than those in every other league 2 team) and get them out there to enjoy it. For those of us who can't make it to most games, results are everything (as they are to everyone in football at the end of the day). Give us a 1-0 or a 2-1 or a 3-2. As long as it's a win. Never lose two on the bounce.

Well this maybe true but we still managed only to do enough to fail - finishing 5th at a time when only the top 4 were promoted.

12 months later the effects of the smoke and drinking clubs obviously got to the players as they managed to secure 23rd spot in Division 4 and had to go cap in hand to the League and apply for re-election (no automatic demotion to the Conference in those days)
