Taylor's track record sways City board

Peter Taylor today began work as City’s new boss for the next 18 games.

The former England under-21 coach this morning signed a short-term deal until the end of May, with a view to extending it if results go well.

Myself and Julian (Rhodes) are very excited about Peter Taylor joining us. His calibre is there for all to see and he cannot wait to get stuck into it

Mark Lawn

But it also allows City to keep their options open in the summer – with rep-orted interest from a couple of managers currently at other clubs.

Joint-chairman Mark Lawn said: “Peter is a very professional man and we’ve gone for him because of his track record.

“The three-month spell gives us the chance to look at each other so it’s good for both parties.

“If Peter proves himself, I’m sure we will be talking about a longer-term contract. But it does mean we can look at others.

“We have been approached by other people who are still under contract and asked if we wanted to talk to them.

“Obviously Bradford City do our business properly so we won’t be doing that until the summer.

“We had asked their clubs for permission which was refused. But if they want to come and speak to us in the summer, when they are out of contract, the opportunity is there.

“But myself and Julian (Rhodes) are very excited about Peter Taylor joining us. His calibre is there for all to see and he cannot wait to get stuck into it.”

While Stuart McC-all arrived as a hot-seat rookie, 57-year-old Taylor brings with him a wealth of experience.

City will be the eighth league club on his managerial CV, which spans almost a quarter of a century since his first job at Dartford in the Southern League.

He can also boast five promotions – a total for the English game that can only be topped by Dave Bassett.

Taylor, who has managed in all four divisions, also had two very successful spells in charge of England under-21s. He even had one game in charge of the senior side on a caretaker basis, giving David Beckham his captaincy debut against Italy in 2000.

But he is best known in Yorkshire for winning back-to-back promotions with Hull, kick-starting their unlikely charge from the basement division to the Premier League. He also took Wycombe up from League Two a year ago.

Lawn and Rhodes had whittled down the shortlist to two yesterday afternoon after the final round of interviews with Dean Windass and Wayne Jacobs. Martin Allen is understood to be the other candidate who ran Taylor close.

Taylor, sacked by Wycombe in October, faces a tough start with successive away games against Accrington on Saturday and then leaders Rochdale.

He had been repeatedly linked with Notts County. And last week his name was even in the hat for the vacant national job in Nigeria alongside Guus Hiddink.

But the challenge of lifting City from the doldrums – and the parallels with Hull – excites him and he was due to get straight down to business.

Wednesday is usually a day off for the City players. But they came in today to meet the new manager, who was then taking them for training at Apperley Bridge.

There is no immediate talk of Taylor bringing in his own backroom staff. He has asked Jacobs to stay on and assist him.

in just 3 days of training before saturday the players will have to undo everything that they have been taught by SM, will have to improve their fitness and learn to play proper football for the unthinkable of 54 points to be obtained---- no pressure spleen then.

I would be intrigued what parameters the directors will use in determining whether the next three months will be regarded as successful or otherwise.

Lawn said earlier in the season that like in any other business targets should be set etc etc.

I wonder if the contract specifies a target of xxx points from the remaining games and , if that is achieved, he will be offered a contract:if not then we start looking again for a new manager who will have to live with targets etc embodied into the contract of employment.

I wasn't suggesting we can obtain all 54 points still to play for........45-50 will do to nick 3rd place!....lol.
Joking apart there is still a very large chunk of the season left and we do have two games in hand on a lot of the teams above us, I always say add six points and look where we'd be....onwards and upwards (hopefully).

I heard on radio Leeds that what they are looking for is some progress. If they went on a great run and made the play offs then fine. But the objective is simply to see progress being made, i.e individual players and the team as a whole performing better.

makes you wonder who the people are who enquired but were still under contract surely one of them must have been Abbott and the second one must be Wenger..

Very happy with this appointment but if i'm being hyper-critical, Lawn's words, which seem to suggest that City are almost holding out for one of these other mystery managers who have approached them, can't exactly strike confidence in Taylor's heart.

For me, this is the man we should be appointing for the long term and i just hope that with Lawn's words in the back of his mind, he isn't just coming into the club to put himself in the shop window or worse still, for the sake of being back in football as opposed to wanting to do well for the club.

That's probably not the case and i am not implying that, it just seems to me that what we need now is a good stable building period with a man at the helm who has been there and done it and this short term solution might not provide that. Taylor is the man for me who can build a squad for next year which ever division we end up in (ultra optimistic!) so why are we holding out for others?

Anyway, well done to Mr Lawn and Mr Rhodes for this appointment and good luck to Mr Taylor.

To be fair, although getting something permanent now would be my preference, if we are waiting on Keith Hill, Abbott or Boothroyd then I would be prepared to wait to see what they had to say

The other words that lonnie may wish to use are not printable and may be you should try and go through a whole post without using capital letters or the word loony? I suppose the capital letters are your attempt to put emphasis on your post because you don't have the necessary linguistic skills you SHEEP.

Glad to read you’re all so happy. The true fans of Bradford City and not the here today gone tomorrow cheapo season ticket brigade will be less than happy about the events that unfurled leading to Stuart McCall’s resignation. What a sad day it was for the club when Stuart called it a day. But then his treatment by the likes of Tyker, Sheepsh..g from Richmond and co has been bewildering. It’s been unbelievable to read the tirades of abuse being directed at McCall, Jacobs and Wetherall. These servants and giants of the club who have given everything to try and put the club back on track and yet we have to read the disrespectful moronic trash of these fickle cheap ticket cretins who have done nothing whatsoever to support the team and have just brought negativity to VP. At least you’d think they’d have some respect for McCall after deciding to leave for the good of the club (I personally think 2 seasons was not enough) but even after he’s gone the knives are still out and the disrespectful comments don’t cease. Let’s hope City bang the prices back up and the likes of Tyker and Sheepsh.g can get themselves back to Owlcoats or Meadowhell or sat in front of grandstand come Saturday afternoon where they belong. They are the cancer of our great club, why not do what Stuart did and leave for the good of the club? what a strange posting.

I cannot speak for the others but I know, as do many others not necessarily on this tiny forum, of what I have actually done for City, the club, this last 50 years or so and continue to do so.

Not cheap tickets but a life time of putting hard earned cash into the club, loads of unpaid time and taking friends to games. For instance just last Saturday I took 7 friends to the game paying nearly 200 quid on fully paid tickets not to mentiion the other cash these guests spent at the club.

I support the club not individual employees.

I was all for SM when he was appointed as I believed he was a good appointment and believed he would take the club forward. His first mistake, and probably his biggest mistake was to take an old crony on as a number 2. Someone with years of excellent service as a player, but whose coaching ability/record was negligible and at Halifax. to think that we alos paid compensation to get him as well!!.

many supporters held the same belief and expressed it here and elsewhere.

wetherall was a great playing servant of the club BUT his coaching position is down to earlier misfortunes for the club and the cash it owed him. He has contributed NOTHING in his coaching position. HIs brief, when appointed as a coach, was to bring players through from the youth and reserve teams to the first team: EXCUSE BUT HOW MANY OF THOSE PLAYERS HAVE MADE THE GRADE IN HIS PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT?

The club is now in it's worst position since the early 1970s with the football being played little better than Sunday league park football. This decline showed no sign of abating and we were more than struggling in what everyone says is a very average division.

The responsibility for this has to be laid at the door of the manager and no one else and he is rightly judged by results, The " God" himself acknowledged that fact. The Board stood by him for as long as they dare and he "resigned"

He was not hounded out of the club by just three individuals but left in the full knowledge that he had taken the playing position to it's worst position in nearly 40 years.

So please, take off those rose tinted glass, smell the coffee and look at the record of the club this last few years.

Peter Taylor has inherited a playing squad that has been allowed to become unfit and too matie with the manager. He has a difficult job and it will take him several weeks to get the players fit and playing football how it should be played.

I believe that he can get at least 15 per cent extra from each player and once he gets that results will flow.

I will continue to support the club as I have done for the last 50 plus years.

cretin I am not, cancerous I am not.

A true city supporter, in the true sense of the word, YES and I will be forever.

As a supporter I reserve the right to comment without fear or favoour. If that hurts your feelings then TOUGH.

Peking - I'm with you. Peter Taylor will have to achieve an awful lot to be considered in the same book as McCall let alone the same page or sentence. Some of those who you refer to have no comprehension of respect or loyalty. I said it before McCall left; these are not the sort of people that you would want at the side of you in battle. Now they have their blood they will quickly go looking for a new scapegoat no matter what history they have with the club. Good look Peter Taylor - you are going to need it.

Can't agree that the team were unfit under McCalls regime, they beat a team with two late goals recently ,i doubt that would have happened if fitness was an issue, also BCFC have been knocking on the door of defences deep into time added on many occasions this season.I think a lack of real craft to unlock tight defences has been a problem for years.I don't agree either that the team lack ability or are anywhere near producing the dross that was produced by some BCFC teams in the seventies.I always found McCalls teams to work hard for 90 minutes but got little reward for all the hard work put in.

Has to some of the best news to come out of VP for a while, welcome Peter Taylor.
This man has the potential to take us forward as a club, however i'm not sure how to take Lawn's comments regarding managers available in the summer. It just seems to me that we should be building for the future and not just short term, he deserves one full season at least.
As for the investment i mentioned the other day, it came from someone who i have no reason what so ever to disbelieve, their partner works at the club!!

OK if we are now reduced to discussing 'shadows': I'll try not to use the 5 letter word beginning with 'S' and ending in 'P' that rymes with sleep. Have you noticed the ghostly shadow of a Sheeeeeeee (phew that was close, nearly nearly said it!) the ghostly 'shadow' of a 'Rabbit's?........ head, eminating from Mr T's mouth in the photo? -The lengths I go to, to appease the under-developed mind.
So easy to wind up!! Bet you dream about me dont you??? Im bored with you now!!

ATTEMPT?....You said it!!
You are a little scary though!! I mean that imagination of yours!!
I dont think I was far off when I named you "LOONY"!

thinks the children should have theirlittle arguements elsewhere all we should care about is the future under peter taylor the past is behind us and can't change it hopefully peter taylor can take us back to where we belong. but shaun from richmond and lonnie should either get forget the lovers tiff and get behind he team or go support some other team

like i posted on another page yesterday if things go well taylor gets a longer deal and i wish him the best of luck but if it doesnt go too good there will be no need to pay him off and lawn/rhodes can approach the other managers who are under contract only till summer namely john coleman and keith hill again no compo would be needed so its a win-win situation for the club in my eyes.

Pick out just one of my posts over the last 6 months that shows me NOT being behind the Team, Manager, Coaching Staff, Chairmen or player. Bet you can't. The whole reason behind me and Shaun having a knobble at each other is because Shaun has don little but crticise negatively and I have been try to get himto icrease his vocabulary and tell us he knows more about football than what league position City happen to be in each Saturday tea time. I have no intention of taking my argument somewhere else. I fully intend to challenge anyone who talks sheep droppings when criticising people who have proved themselves at a various levels of professional football. And if you don't like it you have the option to go and read some other message board.
