Board thank City legend for his work

City this morning confirmed the end of Stuart McCall’s reign as manager.

The club released a statement thanking McCall for his work during two-and-a-half years in charge at Valley Parade.

The statement read: “Stuart McCall has today left his post as manager of Bradford City.

“The decision was felt to be in the best interests of all parties following a run of disappointing results that have left the club in 16th place in the League Two table.

“The club would like to place on record its appreciation for Stuart’s efforts as manager over the past two years and seven months.

“During this time he has worked tirelessly and no one is more disappointed that his endeavours have not been rewarded with more success on the field than Stuart himself.

“Stuart will always have a special place in the hearts of our fans for the dedication and passion he has consistently shown to Bradford City, starting with two highly successful spells as a player with the club.

“No one could have anticipated the overwhelming response to the season-ticket campaign of 2007-08. This great achievement illustrated the huge regard Stuart is held in by everyone connected with the club. His place in some of the most memorable times in the club’s history is assured.”

City also outlined the financial implications of McCall’s departure.

The statement explained: “The board would like to thank Stuart, who – in recognition of the financial position of the club – has accepted a settlement in lieu of the remaining period of his contract that is reasonable, affordable and by no means as much as he could have been entitled to.

“This is because Stuart wants the club’s finances to be as strong as possible in order to achieve the ambition of climbing back up the Football League.

“The club will now seek to appoint a new manager to help us to achieve this ambition and reward the loyalty of the fans, including the 6,800 who have already purchased season tickets for the 2010-11 campaign.”

As if it was ever in doubt McGod has done the right thing by Bradford City in terms of payment.

I wonder if storey2 will stand by his comments that McCall is a rat and will do everything he could to take the club for as much as possible.

Now it official (as if it was ever in doubt) I am absolutely gutted but like i said before i'm more happy for the man now that he is out of the firing line!!

Its my birthday tomrrow!!! What a lovely present!!! Thank heavens someone with the bottle to sack mccall. We should have let him go last season when he should have walked. Please take Jacobs, wetherall, thorne, boulding, clarke, rehman and the rest of your crap on the way out. Good player yes, but a good manager no way. Prime example of Bryan Robson..sorry where is he now?? His style of play was mind numbing, man-mangement skills awful, no style to his play, negative tactics, wrong players he signed, dead horses who need to be whipped. Come on get a grip we have crowds over 12,000. A beauty stadium and an atmosphere and loyal supporters who fork out for this garbage every week. Why on earth he was sacked before xmas i have no idea, at least the new guy could have got some fresh faces in who want to play FOOTBALL!!! Get in a good no nonsense manager who will keep us us up. we should be absolutley destroying this division, it baffles me to see us near relegation. How on earth are we so far down. Also the players are to blame, they need to take look at themselves and see what they have done. We need authority, leadership, passion, play it on the deck, a decent keeper and it may help to have good midfielder and bloomin striker who knows where the net is!!! Blimey get a grip city, show the fans you mean business. WE WERE IN THE PREMIERSHIP!!!!! JEWELL ALL IS FORGIVEN!!! HELP US PLEASE!!!!

Two things from this article:

Stuart yet again shows what a person he is e.g. money wise and no slagging -off etc a complete contrast to most of the losers on this site.
2) lawn finally creeps back into existence albeit whilst not saying anything. Expect to hear a huge rhetoric from the guy shortly despite been nowhere when we needed him

Thamk you Stuart again for trying your best which was not good enough for some of the r soles that come to watch. It was not your fault that half the team were rubbish because you signed them when they were playing well for other clubs. The likes of Boulding who is a waste of space, who gets blown off the ball when the centre half breaks wind.Thorne was injured for most of the season, luke O'Brein should have left in the summer when he stalled on a new contract and has been shocking most of the season. The one good thing he did was getting rid of Collbeck. Zesh rehman was probably signed over his head to try get more asians into the valley too. Good luck Stu and thanks again.

I'd like to thank all those who campaigned to keep McCall at the helm last season. You should be pleased with yourselves it allowed another season to go down the pan !!. He wasn't cut out for it last season and I just couldn't grasp why you all thought he could do it this season. Nobody can ever dispute that he was one of the greatest players to grace VP but playing and management are worlds apart. A quick appointment is needed as the other ginger one can't cut it either.

Thanks for the commitment, and effort Stuart. You clearly love the club and tried your best but as you say it wasn't to be! How quickly some fans forget what he has given to this club over the years by bashing him now. Yes it didn't work, Stuart's tenure as manager will not be seen as a success. However he has been one of this clubs finest servants and the players here today are not worthy to lace his boots. It seems to happen a lot in football great players sometimes can't understand why the players they have in a lower division can't do with a ball what they could, think Hoddle at Swindon and Brian Robson. Nice try Stuart sorry it didn't work out.

It must be a great job being a Bradford Cityl manager! You are on say a three year contract you get sacked and they have to compensate you for the remainder of the contract. You walk out on the contract and they still have to compensate you. How does that come about? They must have some smart negotiators at City.

I understand management isn't all about appearance but regardless of what McCall did the players didn't perform for him. Why?. If the man in charge lets his staff know he's the boss then they are less likely to take the mickey out of you. For me he didn;t come across with having enough authority and was more like one of the lads and when the going got tough he couldn't put his foot down. I echo Ralphies comments on how a person breaks his contract and walks away with a pay off?

I think you have been an absolute gent in all this, not once have you blamed the team, and for that I can't understand, they couldn't even do the simple things right half the time, but that shows what an absolute gent you are.

You deserve success and I am sure you will get it in future, but I'd have a well earned rest somewhere hot first if I were you.

I think this season you would have had more of a chance of success if you had more support from Mark Lawn, but it looks like there was something there that we will never know the truth behind.

All the best for the future, I can't express how disappointed I am that your all your hard work ended with nothing, but it will not change what us true supporters think of you.

Thank you.

Ralphie,

This is the same in all football clubs, this is not an isolated incident.
All managers and players receive compensation for the remainder of their contract, even a player who is sold is due compensation from the selling club, but a lot of the time this is wavered or negotiated down.

One of the most honest interviews you will ever see in football and much respect to McCall , I think McCall has taken a lot of flack over recent weeks and months which may have been better aimed at Mark Lawn.

Lawn might have put some money into City in there hour of need but to me all the money was taken back by the sale of Delph and having lost so many players in the summer and the fact we were not able to sack McCall due to financial restraints we have had to wait for McCall to step aside , which after watching Saturday was probably an easy decision to make.

What went off at half time on the way to the changing room , I could see Michael Flynn having to be pulled away from Luke O Brien and looked pretty angry about something which was said , I also think Omar Daley was involved in the spat but it all happened so quickly you would have needed to be in the sunwin stand to see for sure.

I hope the players realise what a let down they have been and should hang there head in shame , just watch the video linked to this article from McCall and you will realise he is Bradford through and through and his passion and desire will never be matched by these muppets who represent us on the pitch and a lot are not fit to clean his boots never mind wear the shirt , maybe Stuart could suggest taking Boulding , O Brien & Rehmann with him into the wilderness.

Must be the high altitude in Queensbury poor Ralphie either cant read or doesn’t understand what’s going on McCall has with an amicable package inline with the current finances of the club i.e. not taken all he his entitled to, because he wants the best for the club he supports. Some of the people on here should hang their heads in shame, McCall has had three stints at this club, sadly the last not living up to expectation, not just by the fans but by the mans own standards. Reading some of these comments suggest that all is not well at VP, many suggest the one of the chairman has no money could this be why we have had no investment in players? If by some miraculous chance we acquire some new players in the next few weeks then this will smack of hypocrisy, surely this would demonstrate the lack of support for the manager. If what is suggested that the chairman is selecting players is true, we have been in this position before with Richmond. Lets hope we are not going backwards if these suggestions are true. McCall is a legend, he may not have lived up to supporters expectations, but you can’t fault the man for trying. Have no doubt we will never have that luxury again, the new man will be in it for the money. Hope it isn’t “cut me down the middle I am blue and white” Jackson, or Dolan, might as well be Shaun he knows all about football

As I've said on a previous 'posting,' it's sad things didn't work out for Stuart! This could be for a variety of reasons. Nevertheless, I'd love to know the answer to two simple questions, neither of which has ever been asked of him, never mind answered!
a) Why were you not prepared to accept the idea that an older, experienced ex-manager (working beside you) might have been of help in trying to bring success to City?
B) Why did you persevere with (two from) Clarke, Williams and Rehman in central defence when it was obvious that this was the big weakness in the side that cost so many points dropped (home/away)?
I just wish Stuart had brought in someone like Terry Dolan and another central defender to partner Simon Ramsden in the middle. Perhaps if he had, he wouldn't be leaving now!
I suppose we'll never know unless he writes another autobiography!!

Stu has come up trumps for the club in not taking all that he was due, to me this says all you need to know about the man. Not that i didnt want him to go, it just wasnt ever going to work outfor him.
My main gripe is that if the other report is correct we arent going to appoint a new man this season, are the chairmen stupid or what? A new manager can come in and see what response he gets from the current players and decide who'l be gone in the summer, this makes his job ten times easier than meeting the team for the first time in June and having very little time to assess and assemble a team before the season starts. It stinks of a badly run club void of any foresight.

he had a payout because it was obviously something in his contract...i'm no legal expert but obviously he was entitled to one. becasue you choose to read what you want you must have missed the bit when the club statement said he was more then fair but i trust you chose not to read that bit.
he resigned becasue it was the right thing to do.

Stuart McCall is NOT a legend. You may ask why I say that, as he is someone I admire greatly. The word legend means, "a person whose fame or notoriety makes him a source of exaggerated or romanticized tales or exploits". Personally, I don't think his tales need any exaggeration!

Stuart McCall is a honest, hard-working bloke with the utmost integrity. I may have knocked his ability as a manager/coach (which by resigning, he is now admitting), but I have never knocked Stuart McCall the man.

I will always respect the fact that he put his all into the job, worked as hard as he could and when he realised he couldn't deliver, he was man enough to stand down.

What most people will remember him for is his ability as a footballer, notably at City. we will all remember how happy he was when we won promotion to the Premiership, the infamous falling off the car roof etc. However, the real supporters will remember him for something much more important than that. That is, the way he has handled himself over the tragic events of 1985. He never stopped caring about those that perished or the ones they left behind. It will always stay with him and as such, we will always have a special bond.

I would like to think that McCall will go away, continue to learn more coaching methods and manage reserve sides/youth teams/non-league teams and one day, return to complete unfinished business, once he is actually ready.

Sad to see you go Stuart but as ever, you have put the club first; thanks for trying and hope to see you at VP soon.

For those of you who have been spouting that the club is better off without McCall; you have got what you wanted - let's just see how quick you are to turn on the next manager or to find a new scapegoat. Supporters? Don't make me laugh.
I think you will find that those that suggested McCall wasn't ready to be a football manager, are not the ones that have a new 'scape goat'. Those that backed McCall are the ones that are having 'petty vengeances against Lawn'.

Or are you saying it is alright for the McCall followers to attack Lawn, but not okay for the others to dismiss McCall's ability?

99% of posters on these boards have, at some stage, turned on someone, whether that be McCall, Jacobs, Wetherall, Rhodes, Lawn or a particular player. Why is it, the ones that didn't feel McCall was equipped to manage our football club, are the ones now being attacked!

Shaun the Kit-man (iron duties) may actually have a point here for the first time in his life. No way should Jacob's be running the team. How much was he responsible for what many saw has managerial frailties already? He may have been the reason for some of the poor defending we have witnessed at times.

I hope Jakes does take us to promotion :-). I dont think it is a terrible thing him having a few games. He will have had ideas that McCall never choose to adopt so it will be interesting, it will also be interesting to see his starting 11.
Have to go to good old Whitley Bay for a birthday bash this weekend so I am afraid I will have to give it a miss.
I also read above some fans might be chanting abuse at Mark Lawn, glad I wont be there really.
As predicted yesterday things are going to get far far worse at City. I have no evidence but feel there is more then we know going on between the chairmen. I hope I am wrong I really do.
Thanks for all your efforts Stuart, good luck and good health for the future and one day I hope your back to complete unfinished business!!

And this thing for Mark Lawn has got to stop. Over the last 3/4 months, all we have heard is that there are some fans that are continually trying to find fault in our club. They have been called parasistes, poison, cretins, and other such names. We have been accused of posting comments and being the scourge of our club. However, it is alright for others to do likewise with our joint Chairmen.

Can he refresh your memories surrounding Mark lawn;

"A delighted Rhodes said: "This last five years has been all about reaching this solvent state and we are finally there. We've got rid of all the debts apart from a small overdraft facility.

It doesn't mean there's going to be millions of pounds chucked at the team but it does give us a bit more financial stability and allows the resources we do generate within the club to go towards building the team.

It's been a tough few years and Mark's involvement will help tremendously because we now have two people supporting the club financially.

Mark is an avid Bradford City fan who, by his own admission, isn't in this to make money. He has got involved for all the right motives.

I'm quite happy to be in a joint position and it will be good to have somebody else to talk to and share the decisions. Of course there will be times when we don't agree but good partnerships are all about balance".

THEY NOW APPEAR TO HAVE HAD ONE OF THOSE DISAGREEMENTS, BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN LAWN IS ANY LESS HONOURABLE AS RHODES KNEW HIM TO BE.

Mark Lawn invested a seven figure sum many belive to be between £2m and £5m for a 49% share in Bradford City, leaving Rhodes as the majority shareholder. This money was used to wipe away all the remaining debts we had left. That money has gone and Lawn will probably never see it again.

Then before the last season had begun, Lawn & Rhodes decided to help McCall by pushing the boat out and they gave him an extra £700k to play with, knowing we would have losses by doing so. The campaign did not go so well and the 'push' backfired, leaving us with big losses.

In March of last season, Lawn then ploughed in a £1m loan. He didn't come out and announce this, it was Rhodes that did so;

"It’s a very brave thing for Mark to do in the current economic climate and I just think the supporters should know.

At the start of the season we were budgeting for a loss because we pushed the boat out trying to get promotion. There’s not too many who are prepared to put the money in but once again Mark has come up trumps. This isn’t for next season – it will be used to fund this one as well as any previous losses”.

Lawn then added a few days later, " “I’ve certainly backed the club as far as I can go now. The million I’ve put in is it. If we don’t get the number of season-tickets, we haven’t got money to spend on the players. That’s the reality.

Realistically who do they think is going to put money in? I’ve put mine in, Julian’s put his in, is there going to be a tooth fairy? No.

One thing this club will not do again is overspend. We will spend within our budgets unless we get another investor and I don’t think there’s many of them out there in this current climate.

I’ll get people slagging me off and I understand that".

Then, when Delph was sold by Leeds and City received in excess of £600k, the joint Chairmen used the money to repay the debt from the previous season, i.e the increased wage bill. There were no false promises that this season's budget would not be affected by their 'push' as some have indicated. If that was the case, McCall would have had to build a squad with just £700k!

Instead, the budget was reverted back to plan, i.e. the amount that our 'cheap season ticket' would allow for. Do we want to get into debt every season so we can then accuse Lawn of doing a Richmond and leaving us for dead? I for one wouldn't want the Chairmen to over-spend. McCall was given a good enough budget to build a squad and overall, I think he has done a decent job.

Both Chairmen have said that the 'loan' is still in our bank account and is being used to manage our cash-flow. No doubt, some of that money will now be used to pay McCall's settlement and eventually, when the new boss is appointed, Jakes' settlement too.

The only thing Lawn got wrong was to sanction McCall's new contract. However, I am sure that was just as much a decision for Rhodes to make.

One final point. I read many posts this weekend telling Lawn to go as he has no money to invest. Does Rhodes have anything else to invest? Who put the last £1m into the club? Why should Lawn go and Rhodes stay, when they are both skint and have nothing to invest? Both Chairmen have invested all they have. The only difference is that Rhodes backed a 'flagging horse' right to the end, whereas Lawn 'unseated his rider' a couple of months back!

But hey, I understand we all have to have our scapegoats!

A sad day for the club. Nobody would have tried harder than Stuart to succeed, but unfortunately things just didn't work out.

I agree with Stuart, it's better to have tried, than to think what might have been.

The word legend is greatly overused these days, but Stuart is one in everything sense of the word.

No-one can ever take away the memories you have given me and every over supporter.

Thanks for all you have done for the club and all the best for the future.

If the man in charge lets his staff know he's the boss then they are less likely to take the mickey out of you. For me he didn;t come across with having enough authority and was more like one of the lads and when the going got tough he couldn't put his foot down. I echo Ralphies comments on how a person breaks his contract and walks away with a pay off?
thats where it went wrong he didn't wear the correct clothes...lol!!! i've heard it all now...Mancini defo needs to lose the scarf and that will get the players performing again!!! What a tool.....i'm all up for people being criticial if positive at the same time but being critical for the sake of it just tells what some people on here are really like. i can imagine the conversations in the dressing room between the players: Zesh: I'm gonna play like a right c**t today because i cant believe the gaffar has got his socks n boots on. OB: Yeah i just really wish he'd wear a nice suit and then i'd stop hoofing it all day
Like it!! Very funny.

Ralphie, This is the same in all football clubs, this is not an isolated incident. All managers and players receive compensation for the remainder of their contract, even a player who is sold is due compensation from the selling club, but a lot of the time this is wavered or negotiated down.
The fact is that this is an isolated incident! How many managers have walked out on their jobs without another position to go to?
If City had sacked McCall it would have been a different matter but he resigned and thus broke his contract.
If anything City should receive compensation from McCall since he has chosen to break the contract! So City are paying him compensation and then paying a manager for the rest of this season, so they are out of pocket by McCalls actions!
If a player asks for a transfer that puts him in a different situation from a player who is transferred at the behest of his club.

I would like to think that McCall will go away, continue to learn more coaching methods and manage reserve sides/youth teams/non-league teams and one day, return to complete unfinished business, once he is actually ready.

already said that in THEIR eyes he has already been appointed. A further newsflash is that in the recent appointments there was one notable omission. Not stupid enough to hide behind you, you get so much stuff chucked at you because of your OPNIONS that i'm bound to get hit.

Anyway you would probably change opnion, erm i mean sides when it suited you.

I stand on my own two feet thank you , as kit-man shaun has pointed out.

When you gonna sack Weatherall now your the boss? Been waiting a year and half to do it haven't you? based on nothing i may add.

You can now also make and i quote 'probably citys best player Boulding' captain now as well?

Now thats funny

Living in Cheltenham, as I do, one thing we must not even consider is bringing Martin Allen any where near our club. He is almost universally despised by Cheltenham fans who feel he has set their club back years. Not only was he not successful but he also was very highly paid - they had trouble trying to get rid of him over a long period because of this - and also a very arrogant person who disgraced the club in public on more than one occasion. The club is also in a very poor financial state as a result of his short reign. He also made a lot of enemies in the short time that he was at Leicester. He did do a very good job at Brentford on a shoestring, but that was some time ago. I don't think we could afford to bring him in (from what I have been told, he would have been on more than Stuart) nor suffer the repercussions afterwards.

Can he refresh your memories surrounding Mark lawn; "A delighted Rhodes said: "This last five years has been all about reaching this solvent state and we are finally there. In March of last season, Lawn then ploughed in a £1m loan. He didn't come out and announce this, it was Rhodes that did so; "It’s a very brave thing for Mark to do in the current economic climate and I just think the supporters should know. Waynus, you get some stick on these boards but some times you talk a lot of sense. City fans need to understand a few facts. Whether you personally dislike either or both of the joint Chairmen, you have to accept that we wouldn't have a club to support if it weren't for them. Both have invested large amounts of money just to keep this club alive and there has not been a queue of people banging at their doors willing to invest - including all those on these boards moaning about them. They have also stated that they will not put this club into debt they cannot afford, which other chairmen have in the past. To me, this is the right way to do things. They deserve credit for this, not some of the ridiculous, vitriolic comments I have seen on here recently, which are presumably from people who are not true fans or not fans at all. This club does not have money and it has a massive millstone in the lease of the ground, which is totally disproportionate, that other clubs do not have. But the chairmen are doing their best to keep us financially stable, even if they don't get every decision right or do everything to the liking of everyone. They have also been very foresighted in trying to bring more fans through the doors by offering cheap season ticket deals. It doesn't make us any better off than other much smaller clubs in this division in the short term, but it does bring people in who may then bring others over the years. And it's far better having 12,000 in a 25,000 seater stadium than 6,000 as far as creating an atmosphere is concerned. There is no guarantee of success just because we are a 'big name'. We have no more money than many in this division and much larger outgoings. What we do have this season is more of our own players and more promising young players who, with the right coaching and encouragement, could bring in money in the future by going onto to better things. People are entitled to their opinions, but we need to be realistic and get behind the team and the club - and be more positive. The one thing we do have, in spite of some of the rubbish on these boards, is a fantastic set of fans, who carry on supporting despite a lot of knockbacks in recent years. And we also have two chairmen who are real supporters and have kept this club alive. Knocking them is not going to help us because, if they take their bats home, who is going to rescue us next time?

I have never suggested mine are 'the best posts ever', so if yours are better than mine, whoopey doo! I'm thrilled for you that it makes you so proud!

What are 'OPNIONS'? Are they onions with a pea in the middle (you mention them more than once)?

As for sacking Wethers, if I HAD THE CHANCE to get him off the wage bill, I would have done so. However, I would hope that we both know I am not going to get the job really..... or were you being serious. God, that just may be why you post the absurd comments... you actually believe I am going to be the new boss. Sad little you!

The fact is, Wethers added little value last season and in truth we didn't need a full time coach AND an assistant manager. I think you will find I actually suggested replacing one or the other. We are a small club, running a tight ship and cannot afford to be paying wages like Wetherall's, especially alongside Jacobs'. FACT!

Can I also point out that the bloke played for us over 10 years and in that time played in the Premiership. He has since skippered us and been temporary manager. AND still you cannot spell his name right (Weatherall). This isn't a typing error, it is ignorance that you cannot even spell his name right.

I rest my case!
