New keeper hopes all bad luck is in past

New recruit Matt Glennon has seen enough to convince himself that City have the stomach for a battle.

The former Huddersfield keeper claimed his first win in three appearances at Torquay last week.

For the Bantams, the barren streak had stretched back worryingly to December 5. But Glennon believes there is still plenty of fight in the squad – and the Plainmoor comeback proved that.

“We’ve had so much bad luck recently, not just since I’ve been here but in a couple of games before that,” he said.

“When I played at Bury, one of the first things I did was give a penalty away. Then we played really well and got nothing.

“At Lincoln we played some good stuff and didn’t deserve to get beaten but did. Then we were really scrappy at Torquay last week, didn’t put more than five passes together and won.

“It was great to get that first win and great to see that fighting spirit among the lads. When we went 1-0 down, it was good to see that spirit to take it right to the last kick of the game to win.

“We were under a lot of pressure and Torquay had chances but as soon as they hit the post, I told Clarkey (Matt Clarke) that we’d had our little bit of luck and we’d win the game now.

“Sometimes it’s going to be a battle but we can do that. We’ve got a couple of big lads in the team, some scrappers and some footballers.”

Glennon, 31, has been keen to make his presence felt with the back four. He sees it as part of his job to pass on his experience to some of the younger players.

He said: “It’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing. But I’m always supportive to the lads. A few lads here haven’t played that much football and you see a few little things to pass on.

“You talk people through things like positioning and getting over mistakes. When young lads make a mistake, it’s important they don’t worry about it until the game has finished.

“You’ve got to help people do whatever they can to get us the three points.”

Despite joining City three weeks ago, Glennon has had to wait until today to make his home debut after the Notts County game was postponed.

“I spent 40 minutes ironing my match shirt to be ready and then got a phone call at 11.40am to say the game was off!” he said.

“I had quite a few people coming as well because it was my first game in a while but hopefully they’ll be there again this afternoon.

“The frustration of the last year started drifting away as soon as I signed for Bradford.

“My first game back took a while to get into things again even though I’d trained very hard. I felt a lot better against Lincoln and then last week was more like my old self again.”
