City striker can’t wait to get back in action after hamstring woes

Peter Thorne has kicked off his second “pre-season” and declared: I’m absolutely buzzing.

City’s top scorer for the past two years is back training again and adamant that his hamstring troubles are finally behind him.

But Thorne will not rush his recovery after an abortive comeback last month.

He said: “I’ve got to make sure that everything is right after last time because I can’t do that again. But fingers crossed, I’m 100 per cent and everything feels good.

“I’m not one of those players who are super-naturally fit. It always takes me about four or five games to get back to the top of my fitness.

“I’ve been out eight weeks in effect, which is like a full summer, so I’m starting again.

“I know my own body after all this time and I need matches under by belt to get up to full fitness.”

Thorne is still waiting to break his duck this term after netting 32 goals in his first two seasons at Valley Parade.

But the veteran striker is not unduly concerned. It took him until November to get off the mark when he first joined and then he scored 15 times in 27 starts.

“It’s horrible when you look at the top-scorers list and I’m nowhere near but I know it takes me time to get going,” said Thorne.

“The lads are doing well without me and everyone should be back fit when I’m ready to be involved again. That will help me in a way because I probably won’t be rushed as much.

“I’m running out of time because I’m not getting any younger. At my age, every game is like your last one.

“But I’m absolutely buzzing to be back out there. It gets lonely in the gym on your own.”

Meanwhile, City have revealed that prohibitive police costs put them off switching the Rochdale home game to next Saturday.

Both clubs are out of the FA Cup, leaving them kicking their heels for next weekend’s second round.

With Dale due to visit Valley Parade three days later, there were talks to move the match forward. But City joint-chairman Mark Lawn admitted the increased police bill put paid to the idea.

“It was going to involve an extra five-figure sum because we had not given the police 21 days’ notice,” said Lawn.

“It would have been a ridiculous waste of money and one thing we don’t do at this club is waste money.”
