City win penalty shoot-out

CITY 2 NOTTS CO 2 (City won 3-2 on pens) Simon Eastwood saved two penalties as City won a dramatic shoot-out to beat Notts County.

The Bantams saw off Notts County 3-2 on spot-kicks after the Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash finished 2-2.

Former City skipper Graeme Lee was sent off on his Valley Parade return and City twice came from behind.

Notts County were in front after 11 minutes through winger Craig Westcarr. But unlike Meadow Lane two months ago, City bounced back as Michael Boulding netted his second goal in successive games following a lovely pass by Michael Flynn.

City enjoyed the lion's share of possession for the rest of the half and Jamie O'Brien's free-kick almost slipped through right on the interval.

Lee was shown his second yellow card after 66 minutes for a foul on Boulding. O'Brien's free-kick was well tipped over by Kasper Schmeichel.

Ten-man County came on strongly in the closing stages and Delroy Facey put them back in front. But Chris Brandon headed a second equaliser to take the game to penalties.

Eastwood saved from Facey and keeper Kasper Schmeichel to see City through to round three.

Great result! Didnt get to the game but watch the live streaming tx on BBC sport, well done lads especally Eastwood for the 2 penalty saves, we had at least for 54% possesion for most of the game, going by the bbc possesion bar,and more shots. Well done stuart for resting a few of the main players and subbing thr others through the game to give them a rest, still unbeaten lads, does this class as a win in our unbeaten streak.

Of course it classes as a win, we are in the next round!!
Great determination to get the eqaliser. For anyone in carlsberg was their 2nd a Clarke own goal or Facey get it?
Can't believe there was a pitch invasion, quite embarrasing really lol

I got a text saying "You should have been at that one" and they were right. Gutted I had to miss it. Boulding is showing his mettle and Stu has finally rid himself ofthe deadwood and got a cracking team. We need to tighten that defence but what a differance. Not like previous seasons when we could not score. Credit to the lads.

Great win, not sure all the 'deadwood' has gone? Eastwood saved two penalties and although he does make errors (2nd goal against Northampton) he is getting better.
Lets hope we get some local rivals at home in the next round.

well done City - what a brilliant night of football. I'm so chuffed. Only sour note the embarrasing pitch invasion from some of our chav fans, but still great spirit to come back twice and we could easily have nicked it had stoppage time gone on longer. impressed with Osborne and Sharry tonight, also thought Clarke did okay, yes you wouldn't put him ahead of williams or zesh but he is good back up. Pleased Mickey B scored again and what a pass from Flynn to set it up. Oh and I was sat right by Sven, great night all round

Good result, I don't care what the competition is, winning breeds confidence, especially against one of the most fancied sides.

Also good to see Eastwood grabbing the headlines.

Just hope we don't get a fine from the FA for the pitch invasion.

This is the problem with letting in unaccompanied kids in for a quid. The should have to bring an adult with them. Set a number of kids that each adult can bring in for a quid and then any others pay full price. That way someone would be there to stop them running on the pitch.

The fine could end up been more than the full take from the match.

Grimsby? The team spirit is just like the team that Stuart played in 25 years ago - you just knew that we would overcome. The hunger and team spirit is simply fantastic. Oh where are those SMcC critics now???

Are we ging to get 'where are those SMcC critics now' comment after every win/draw?

I suppose that if we had been playing badly and some fans had turned on McCall, you would have been keeping comments like that to yourself. Instead you would have posted something along the lines of keeping feelings in check and to judge at the end of the season.

Why turn every thread into point scoring based on what some have said previously?!?

Firstly, after the "debate" I have had with 'JMck, Skipton' since the weekend, I said I would just agree with him in future so he wouldn't have anything to attack me for. Having watched the game and read his post, I actually do agree with the majority of his post this time anyway.

We played good attacking football, on the deck, (only changed once Thorne was introduced and Clarke went up front). Osbourne on the left of the front 3 with Boulding central and Neilson on the right was good to watch. It wasn't Scott's best game and he looked heavy legged at times, but the three of them still caused problems for County. (I still think that was the way to go last Saturday).

Matt Clarke was very good in the air, but still lacked composure with the ball on the ground. Why doesn't he put the ball out when under pressure? That said, overall I was pleased with his performance last night.

Osbourne was very good in the first half, despite having to dribble through the puddles. It was a shame we didn't get the ball to him more often in the 2nd half.

Boulding's runs were excellent and he found space between their right-back and centre-back on a number of occasions. However, we delayed the pass too often and he ended up off side or marked.

An excellent performance and the right result. It would have been a travesty had their 2nd goal been the winner. Other than a 15 minute period leading up to their 2nd goal, we were the better team.

On a sour note, we are likely to face a large fine and possible sanctions. Some stupid yobs behind the goal were pelting Kasper with items and then coins. At half-time, he picked up one of the coins, trotted up to the referee and gave it him (it wasn't a bribe LOL). That is almost certainly going to appear in his match report.

Then we make matters worse by having a pitch invasion. Do these morons not realise it is OUR club they are hurting by doing these stupid things. It wasn't just the kids either. There were quite a few adults (including the infamous Charlie) on the pitch too.

After the 'lighter throwing' incident of last season, we could be in serious trouble for these incidents. Wouldn't it be ironic to draw L33ds at home in the next round and then have to play them 'behind closed doors' as a punishment! Or we could get a large fine, more than we earned on the night. McCall wanted to rest a few players last night, but rules dictated he couldn't or we would be fined. Now, having played a strong team, we find ourselves facing the possibility of a larger fine!

Erm, what more could anyone want? Hudderssh1t losing to a team in our division who we easily beat a couple of weeks ago!!!

Well done to the team, excellent performance which stu can use to motivate them later in the season. I had hoped that Boulding's experience and quality would mean he could march in to the team after weeks out and play well immediately. We don't just have a good team this season, we've got a great squad - and manager!

On a more serious note though, it seems as though all is not right at Notts Co. At the beginning of the season it looked as though they were going to blow this league away, now they look like they'll struggle to stay in the play offs.

The football league need to get themselves sorted out and stop individuals or groups of investors buying up clubs, stretching the finances and then messing the clubs up. Also, clubs need to wise up - excessive investment is not a guaranteed route to success.

If Brady and pornboy come sniffing I hope City tell them to get lost.

having just watched the highlights again-- how can lee complain? he comes through the back of a player when he is already on a yellow and then seems surprised to get booked again and sent off:i it looked a good decision on the night and the highlights confirm it.!!ntelligent player not!! gald we got rid when we did.

I hinted at problems at Notts County a few weeks ago.

There appears to be some mystery about the finance men and the men being put up for interviews.

the salary cap system cannot be correct even taking cry baby Campbell out of the equation.

I think we may hear further that perhaps the league have reservations and require more information about the take over before formal approval is given..

The Birmingam thing is not going to happen now as the exiting directors have, since their initial interview, clarified which geographical area they were viewing.

However I cannot see much south of Birmingam which doesn't need mega bucks putting in to realise the potential.

I hope you're wrong on this one Waynus. I was laughing at the pitch invasion, same as the coach - a combination of relief after having my heart in my mouth for the previous 5 minutes, and a feeling of partial payback for the drubbing they gave us on the opening day. It was a short lived and jubilant pitch invasion, nothing nasty as far as I could see. It would be a great shame if we ended up getting sanctioned after such a great display. We were good for the win. Did anyone else think that Ravenhill, who crossed for fatty Facey to score their second, looked to be about two yards offside when the ball was played to him?

Waynus, I don't think these are aimed only at you! You continue to be a regular poster on here, but I'm sure you'll agree that many of the ranters who were on calling for Stuart's head at the start of the season have been conspicuous by their absence in recent weeks.

Very true, but a lot of those posters hadn't been noticed before, so I'm not convinced there were regulars anyway. Some of the others that posted so negatively, have been back online since and have praised McCall for the way the team have started to play and for his summer signings etc.

The problem is, every time we put in a good performance, the same posters come on saying 'I told you so' etc. We are improving all the time, but as of yet, we have won nothing.

What really rankles me is that I have generally been positive of late and have praised certain players, the mangement team etc for the way we are playing and the majority of decisions we have taken. However, the one time I post a view that we got something wrong (not necessarily a blazing criticism), I get hammered for it. And I'm not the only one.

I appreciate the above comments weren't necessarily aimed at me, but it was aimed at similar posters.

I was saying last season that i wasnt keen on Mccall as manager if he would have walked it wouldnt have bothered me because as a player he was great as a manager last season made too many mistakes seletion, substitutions etc but this season im pleased he's turned it around so far because it means we are doing well and that is the only thing that matters

Firstly, I was behind the goal, so too far away to see if Ravenhill was offside or not. Although an excellent player, a couple of his challenges were a little late.

In relation to sanctions, I am not saying we will definitely get some, but it doesn't look great. We have a warning carried forward from last season and now are likely to be reported for coin throwing. On top of that was the pitch invasion.

Even if we get away with fans running on the pitch, we aren't likely to be as lucky with the coin throwing.

Just read the comments from McParland, where he claims they were the better team and deserved to win in the 90 mins. Perhaps he needs to read the stats that their own website are showing;

Possession: City 54% - 46%
Shots on Target: City 8 - 6
Shots off Target: City 2 - 1
Corners: City 10 - 7.

Bearing in mind County will have had around 3-4% possession more than us in the final 20 minutes, I think it safe to say we dominated the rest of the game!
