City want Michael Boulding but have warned the hitman: We won’t hang around forever.

Boulding, who notched 25 goals last term for relegated Mansfield, is being pursued by a posse of clubs.

It’s understandable he doesn’t want to rush because of the different options but I’ve also told Michael that we’ve got to move on in our striker search in the mean time

Lincoln, Rotherham and his former club Grimsby have all publicly declared their interest.

City have also spoken to the 32-year-old and are confident of trumping their League Two rivals. But boss Stuart McCall has told Boulding that the clock is ticking.

The striker is currently sizing up his options while away on holiday but McCall is wary of missing out on other potential attacking targets as he waits for an answer.

McCall said: “We’ve had a positive discussion with Michael as have numerous clubs, which is his prerogative, and now he’s taking a final break to think things over before making his mind up when pre-season starts.

“It’s understandable he doesn’t want to rush because of the different options but I’ve also told Michael that we’ve got to move on in our striker search in the mean time.

“We will be speaking to other centre forwards now while he is away and if one jumps out at me then we will not hang about to make a decision.

“The lad has got plenty of clubs in our division after him and some from League One as well. It’s down to him to mull them over while he is away.

“It’s not that I’m saying no to him. I was pleased with how our discussions went and think we’ve got a chance.

“We respect that Michael wants to take his time over things but he also has to respect our position and if his decision went against us we might have missed out on other options while we wait for him to come back.

“I’ve spoken to four different strikers anyway and plan to talk to a couple more next week. We are shopping round, just like Michael.”

City’s interest in Luke Beckett has cooled after they agreed a fee with Huddersfield last month. Halifax’s England C striker Jon Shaw is also believed to be on the radar, although they are awaiting developments with their crisis-hit neighbours.

City’s hunt for a new No 1 keeper has targeted Rob Burch from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 24-year-old made three appearances for the Owls last term before being released, even though he is quite highly rated.

McCall confirmed he was chasing the former England youth stopper, who had a brief loan spell with Barnet the season before.

He said: “Rob is back in the country next week and we’ll be having another discussion with him. But I know there’s a lot of interest.”

Meanwhile, City are holding second interviews for the two major candidates for the youth-team vacancy. Further discussions were due to take place this afternoon.

McCall added: “We’ve had some good quality applicants and there are two who are very difficult to split.

“We’ve invited them back for a further interview with Peter Horne and David Wetherall, who will be working most closely alongside them."
