SIMON Grayson admitted City were not ruthless enough as they slumped to a Yorkshire derby defeat at Doncaster.

Two late goals from John Marquis gave Rovers the 2-0 win at the Keepmoat Stadium – and meant it is now ten games without a league win for the sinking Bantams.

Grayson’s side had been on top in the first half but failed to take their chances before fading after the break.

“The performance probably summed up the season,” said Grayson. “We were very good in patches and not so good and where we are in terms of results in the second half.

“In the first half, we asked a lot of questions of them. We got the ball out wide, we got crosses in but weren’t ruthless enough to take those opportunities.

“Whether that is down to a lack of confidence or we’ve just not got enough quality in the group.

“Second half you’re frustrated because we stopped doing the things that we’d done well. Then we looked a very average team.”

Grayson was unhappy with Doncaster’s opening goal as City allowed Niall Mason to put in the cross – and left Marquis unchallenged to head home.

And he was disappointed with the lack of response to going behind.

He added: “When the first goal goes in, it does knock your confidence. But the only way to restore that is to have the inner belief that you are good players.

“We’re giving them as much encouragement to go and perform as anybody. We’re telling them to enjoy themselves and express themselves.

“But you’ve got to keep doing the basics right. Why change the game plan that we had worked so well first half?

“We were really solid and limited them to nothing and looked ever so good going forward.

“Then we conceded the goal and stopped doing the same things. We didn’t ask enough questions of their back four, we didn’t put enough balls in the box.”
