ADAM Thompson’s return to Bury could release cash for City in time for the transfer deadline.

The centre half has gone back to his parent club after playing 14 times on loan for the Bantams.

Ryan Lowe, now in charge of League One’s bottom side, was keen to add him to their defensive options.

Stuart McCall hopes the amount City were paying towards the Northern Ireland  international’s wages can now be diverted into the budget for potential arrivals before tomorrow’s 11pm cut-off point.

McCall said: “Bury came on to us about Thommo. Obviously with the change of manager, they wanted to recall him.

“Both parties had to agree but we had to weigh up the fact that we were paying half his wages and he’s not been starting for us.

“Thommo is a good pro but things haven’t gone as well in terms of game time as he would have hoped.

“When we brought him in, we were getting really near to the (August) deadline and all of a sudden, Thommo popped up having only gone to Bury the month before.

“He didn’t give us a minute’s bother and worked as hard as he could.

“But he couldn’t dislodge the lads who were playing at the time and we couldn’t guarantee him regular football.

“Obviously with what we were paying Bury, those finances could go towards another player if possible. Every penny counts.”
