STUART McCall reckons City currently boast the best midfield in League One.

The Bantams reinforced their position in the top three with a 4-1 success at MK Dons on Saturday – their fourth away win.

Jake Reeves, the recalled Nicky Law and Romain Vincelot were outstanding as the visitors dominated possession and McCall believes they are setting the standard for the division.

“I think the midfield three are as good as anything,” said the City boss. “They’ve all got different attributes to their game.

“I’m delighted when you’ve got the likes of Lawsy and Reevesy on the park because they dominate the football.

“They pass with a purpose and we want Law to go at players and get that in his game. That suits him.

“We told the players they need to be intelligent and we’ve got some bright players to take the ball into good areas to work the opposition.

“We had a game plan and obviously their early sending off had a big bearing on the game. But even the way they got the red card came from us pressing and forcing the mistake.”

Tony McMahon will have a scan today to assess the extent of his hamstring injury.

The right back, who claimed his sixth assist for Vincelot’s opening goal, limped off in the second half when he pulled the muscle while taking a corner.

He is expected to miss at least a month but McCall is confident that on-loan Burnley defender Luke Hendrie can fill in.

He added: “We’ll obviously lose out with Tony’s deliveries and his assists. But Luke has got a great attitude to the game and the experience of it and I’m sure he will be fine.

“But it’s a blow for Tony. The scan will show us what grade of tear it is but normally it’s four to six weeks out if it’s a bad one.”

Hendrie will play in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Guiseley tonight. It is a mainly development side although keeper Lukas Raeder will get a game.

The German was on the bench again at Stadium MK after Colin Doyle flew back from Ireland in time to feature.

The City keeper admitted he got little sleep beforehand with an early start to jet in from Dublin following Republic of Ireland’s win over Moldova on Friday night.

McCall said: “It’s easy to say it was the right decision because of the result.

“But Doyley could have come and made one error – like any keeper or player can. Then it would have been the wrong one.

“It was right because of logistics and how well he and the back four are playing together.

“That’s again no slur on Lukas but Doyley has been playing very confidently and he made some important saves again.

“The biggest was the one-on-one which is a bread and butter save but their boy was through to slide it in. Doyley’s a big unit and spread himself well.”

Paul Taylor dropped to the bench but came on to score his first goal for the club. McCall had opted not to start with two wingers again and insists he will continue adapting the team for each game.

“I tell the lads that it’s horses for courses,” he said.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do next week against Bury yet. We might change it again.”
