NEW loan signing Luke Hendrie has already banked City £25,000 as a teenager.

Now Stuart McCall is confident the Burnley right back will be right on the money.

Hendrie is set to feature in a youthful Bantams side in a behind-closed-doors game at Notts County today to kick off his loan until January.

The son of club legend and Telegraph & Argus columnist John is starting his third spell at Valley Parade.

As a youngster, he was in City’s age group system before Manchester United spotted his potential as a 14-year-old in 2008. The Bantams received £25,000 in compensation in the deal.

Hendrie also featured under Phil Parkinson in pre-season two years ago and played in every friendly.

But with Stephen Darby and Tony McMahon in front of him, the right back was not kept on.

Hendrie, who turns 23 on Sunday, has now returned to City with 54 senior games under his belt including a full campaign on loan at Kilmarnock.

McCall said: “I saw quite a bit of him last season at Kilmarnock on the TV when they were playing Celtic or Rangers. He was always in the top three performers in the side in those games.

“He’s got experience and he’ll be hungry to do well coming back to a club he first signed at.

“I used to watch him when he was a younger one before he went to Man United.

“He’s settled in to a right back position but as a youngster you could put him anywhere. He had the attributes because he was a good footballer.

“It’s a challenge for him to come in and do the best he possibly can to get into the side.”

Hendrie comes in to fight with McMahon for the starting role. Jacob Hanson was identified as back-up when he signed from Huddersfield in the last transfer window but City do not feel he would be ready yet to step up if needed.

McCall is pleased to have another defender on board who is capable of slotting straight in.

He jumped at the chance to take Hendrie when head of recruitment Greg Abbott was told the boyhood City fan would be available.

Two other League One clubs had shown an interest but Hendrie made it clear that he only wanted to join the Bantams.

McCall added: “It came a bit out the blue. Greg gave me a call the other day and as soon he mentioned Luke’s name I said ‘yeah definitely’.

“We were looking for someone like that to come in and he’s got 30-40 games under his belt from up in Scotland. Before that he was playing at York and Hartlepool.

“If he’s got his dad’s personality, he’ll be pushing himself to the maximum to be the best he can be.”
