STUART McCall is raring to unleash City’s pace attack on League One.

Shay McCartan joined up with his new team-mates for the start of pre-season training after being unveiled as the fourth new face of the summer.

And the Northern Ireland international is another attacking recruit who looks built for speed.

McCall said: “Paul Taylor is quick, Dominic Poleon is quick and McCartan is another one who has got a good turn of pace.

“He’s got what we’re after. He’s another one who is at an age where he is hungry, he can get goals – and he is quick as well.”

City paid an undisclosed fee - thought to be six figures - to Accrington for McCartan, who has signed a three-year deal.

He scored 23 goals in 103 appearances with Stanley after being released by Burnley in 2013.

The 23-year-old netted 11 times last season for John Coleman’s side, earning him a call-up to the Northern Ireland squad.

He came off the bench for the last seven minutes of their friendly against New Zealand at the start of the month and was kept in the squad for the World Cup qualifying win in Azerbaijan.

McCartan, who was named League Two player of the month in March, will also provide a free-kick threat for City – six of his goals last term came from set-pieces.

McCall added: “He is a dead-ball specialist. You see some of his goals – they’ve been fantastic.

“They did a little bit on him on Soccer AM last year and his free-kicks were superb.

“Shay is a ten or someone who plays off the front. We’ve been looking for someone to fill that gap once Billy Clarke left.

“He is another who can play in a variety of positions – behind the striker, up top and out wide.

“He got a cap from Northern Ireland at the back end of the season which shows how well he’s been playing and he’s another player we feel can only improve with us.”

McCartan said: “My main attribute is probably my pace, I’m quite explosive off the mark.

“I’ve been used to playing in front of 1,500-2,000 people at Accrington. Here you get 15,000-20,000 and I can’t wait.”

With the attacking holes filled, City are still actively pursuing Wimbledon midfielder Jake Reeves.

But Dons boss Neal Ardley insisted their move for the former Tottenham trainee, reported to be worth £150,000, is far from a done deal.

“Bradford are big fans of Jake,” he told the South London Press. “But at the moment that one is a little bit in the balance.

“It is no foregone conclusion that Jake wants to go or whether we are going to keep him.”
