STUART McCall reckons Nicky Law can improve his game by adding more goals.

Law scored his second of the season with the midweek header to see off Cambridge in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Now McCall wants to see that repeated more often, starting with tomorrow’s clash with Charlton.

McCall said: “Lawsy gets himself in good positions and is a good finisher. We expect more and he does himself when it comes to goals.

“I know he gets as much from creating them and he does have a lot of assists. He’s playing at the top of his game at the moment.

“But just to add that final bit if he can chip in with more goals, that would be pleasing for us all.”

Law’s near-post nod came straight after McCall had moved him into a ‘number ten’ role playing behind striker Jordy Hiwula.

The Bantams boss said: “Sometimes managers get lucky. We made the change and 20 seconds later, no doubt while people in the stands were saying ‘what’s he doing’, Nicky scored with a bullet header.”

Law played the full tie on Wednesday – a win that earned City a third-round trip to either Cheltenham or Leicester under-21s in yesterday’s draw – but others like James Hanson, Romain Vincelot and Nat Knight-Percival have had nearly a fortnight without a game.

McCall said: “It’s been like a mini pre-season for some of them but we need to keep the fitness levels up.

“They’ve been working hard but it’s not just running. There have been a lot of possession drills and the quality has been excellent.”

Tony McMahon came through his comeback without a problem but Billy Clarke’s lingering calf injury will possibly keep him out of action until Christmas.

McCall admitted: “The calf does take a little bit longer. It improves for three days then sits still for ten. I imagine Billy naturally gets frustrated – but you’re looking at three to four weeks out when you’ve had a little tear.”

Charlton play their first league outing under new boss Karl Robinson and McCall is ready for a tough encounter.

“They are a form side and scored five at Bristol Rovers in their last away game,” he said.

“It’s a top-six squad and they are definitely under-achieving. But it wouldn’t surprise me, depending what happens in the window, if they really start getting it together.”
