JAMES Meredith has signalled his intention to finish his career in England at Valley Parade.

City's attacking left back is out of contract in the summer and has opened talks over a possible new deal.

Meredith's ultimate aim is to return to his native Australia before hanging up his boots. But first he hopes to extend a stay at the Bantams which began in the summer of 2012.

Meredith confirmed initial contract conversations have taken place – but he is not in a hurry.

He said: "I've had chats with the club. I think it will probably be something that will happen later on down the line.

"I think they are happy with how I'm doing and there will be plans for the future. I'm okay with it as it is at the moment. I'm just enjoying the football and we'll see what happens.

"It would be great to sign for the club again. It would be better to get a promotion and re-sign – that would be fantastic. But for now I'm just working on trying to get the team in the best position possible."

Meredith is back up to speed after suffering an ankle injury two months ago in City's first defeat of the season at Oxford, which kept him out for four games.

He admits to having to play through the discomfort at times but it has not hampered his cavalier approach.

He said: "I had the dip when I unfortunately got injured. It's been a bit difficult because my ankle hasn't been as strong since. But I'm building up form again.

"I'm aware of it when I'm playing but I manage it. It's difficult with the type of football I like to play, which is very up and down the pitch. You are constantly pounding on the ankle and it wears away.

"But I'm happy with my form at the moment. I'd like to get a few more assists and a couple more goals but I think my form is pretty good.

"Nobody really beats me down the line and then I get forward and create things and help the attack."

Having been rested from Checkatrade Trophy duty, Meredith is itching to get back against Charlton tomorrow as City return to League One duty after a fortnight.

He said: "Our momentum's gone a little bit cold, which is frustrating considering we lost the last game (at Swindon). We're really excited about getting going again and it's a good challenge ahead of us."
