STUART McCall has turned the spotlight on the whole team in City’s search for more goals.

The scoring boots have suddenly dried up with only one goal in the last three games for the Bantams.

That has raised calls from fans to swoop for a new hitman in next month’s transfer window.

McCall admits the lack of cutting edge is holding City back but insists it is more to do with every area of the team contributing their share.

He watched promotion rivals Sheffield United slip up in midweek against Walsall when the Bramall Lane crowd vented their frustration for the same reason.

McCall said: “They’ve got Billy Sharp, who’s been prolific through his career, Leon Clarke from Bury and Caolan Lavery who they bought for hundreds of thousands of pounds on the bench.

“But you listen to their fans and they’re all talking about needing a goal-scorer. They’ve got three.

“There are never any guarantees. (James) Hanson has got his knockers but scores the winner at Wimbledon and the winner against Northampton.

“Sheffield United battered Walsall but Sharp missed a penalty – like Billy Clarke did for us at Oxford – and they don’t take their chances.

“It’s great to have this 20-goal striker everyone talks about. But at the most successful clubs, the goals are shared around.

“Everyone chips in – the centre halves, the midfielders, the wide players.

“If you do that and get three strikers contributing with 12 or so goals each, then you’ve got your quota.”

Clarke currently leads City on six, Jordy Hiwula five and Hanson and Haris Vuckic have both scored four.

The squad spent part of yesterday’s training session going through a film of clips from last weekend’s loss at Swindon and how the game got away from them. It followed a similar blank on the previous away trip against Southend.

McCall said: “Swindon’s chances have come from two corners and us carelessly giving the ball away three times.

“Our chances have come through really good football and carving them open – look at the one (Marc) McNulty had early on and Hanson.

“I’m more than satisfied with the way we are playing.

“Of course we would love to take more opportunities and score more goals. That’s only natural.

“But you look at Bolton winning 1-0 again last week at Northampton and taking three points.

“We played Northampton and I was really happy with the performance. We didn’t kill them off and that could have come back to bite us.

“But in some games, one goal is enough.

“We know we need to be scoring more goals but every club is saying that.

“Sheffield United went on a run of scoring for fun and now there’s murmurings of needing a new striker.

“We play Charlton next week and they’ve paid money for Magennis and Ajose. MK Dons have got Agard, Bury have Vaughan.

“It’s not something we aren’t aware of or have closed ourselves off from.

“We talked about not having that killer instinct and then scored ten in three games against really good sides. Now we’ve only got one in the last three but we’re not panicking.”

McCall is in regular touch with chairman Edin Rahic and chief scout Greg Abbott about City’s plans for the transfer window. But he is hedging his bets with the critical holiday period to come.

He added: “You need a goal-scorer that can fit in the side.

“But you can’t guarantee success even with someone who might have scored 20 goals for his club. If you aren’t creating opportunities for him, he won’t score.

“It’s a balancing act and we just need to improve in the final third but that’s throughout the team.”
