ROMAIN Vincelot is still to chip in with his first City goal – but he is not losing any sleep over it.

The skipper believes he can break his duck quicker than central-defensive partner Nathaniel Knight-Percival.

But he is not going to panic if it doesn’t happen.

Vincelot has a reputation for chipping in with goals but he also has previous for proving that less can mean more.

The 31-year-old has scored four in each of the past two seasons but his most successful campaign in recent years saw him never get off the mark.

Vincelot said: “If we spend the whole season being successful and I don’t score a goal, it doesn’t matter.

“That’s what I did at Leyton Orient (in 2013-14).

“It was the only season where I didn’t score one goal. But we got all the way to the play-off final and I played every single game.

“You’re successful through the team. I just want to win the game. That’s all I’m looking at on the pitch.

“I don’t really feel any pressure to score. As a defender it doesn’t matter.

“It is good if you can add to the team, of course, but it’s not a great deal.

“But who will score first between Percy and me? Me, of course!”

Vincelot and Knight-Percival have linked so well that is hard to remember that the Frenchman was viewed as the potential midfield general when City bought him from Coventry in the summer.

His only outing in the role most expected him to make his own came in the first clash with tomorrow’s opponents Southend at Valley Parade last month – and was arguably his one poor performance.

Even in the fluid squad policy that is currently working so smoothly under Stuart McCall, it is unlikely to see Vincelot back in the middle of the park any time soon.

Instead, he has established himself as a key cornerstone of the back four to leave natural central defenders Rory McArdle and Nathan Clarke scrapping for a seat on the bench.

The way Vincelot and Knight-Percival can bring the ball out of defence has also become an important facet of the passing game that has been instilled.

But then, given that Knight-Percival also began his career further up the field as a winger, it should come as no surprise.

The former Shrewsbury captain has won a host of Valley Parade admirers – Vincelot included.

He said “Percy is very good. I understand quite well how he plays.

“He’s got good pace and his athleticism is important for the team to have because he can run back quite quickly.

“He has a good left foot and is strong with his head – he has the whole package. It’s always pleasing to play with him.”

Knight-Percival’s classy style of play earned him the moniker ‘Rolls Royce’ with supporters in Shropshire and Vincelot can understand why.

He said: “I didn’t know Percy had that name. I will call him Rolls Royce now! But he’s calm, he doesn’t rush anything or panic.

“We try to talk to each other quite a lot to make sure we know where we are at all times in the game.

“We are understanding each other. It has been quite a few games now together and the more you do it, the more you get to know the other one.”
