STUART McCall will give City a history lesson before they host manager-less Shrewsbury tomorrow.

The struggling Shropshire side head for Valley Parade reeling from the departure of boss Micky Mellon, who has taken over at National League Tranmere.

But as City look to cement their top-two position with a third straight league win, McCall is wary of any potential backlash from the visitors.

He said: “You only have to look at Coventry last week after Tony Mowbray went. Port Vale had won five on the bounce at home, Tony leaves, his assistant takes over and Coventry win their first game 2-0.

“History will show that you do get a response (to a manager going).

“There will probably be people watching it who are interested in the job. The players will be aware of that.

“We won’t really have an idea how they are going to set up.

“But I can’t speak for them. We know what we’ve got to do.

“We’ve got to be positive in everything and follow on from last Saturday. Watching it again, the performance was even better than I thought.”

City’s impressive 1-0 win at Chesterfield extended the unbeaten start to 11 games but McCall dismissed any thoughts of a home banker in front of what they hope will be Valley Parade’s largest crowd of the campaign.

He added: “We’re certainly not thinking that way. People probably had us down to win against Port Vale in the first game and Oldham.

“We got the result last home game with our least impressive performance. Last Saturday, we had both and played really well – and we want to carry that on.”

Josh Cullen plays for Republic of Ireland under-21s against Serbia in Waterford tonight and misses the game.

Danny Devine is expected to come in, although McCall may consider moving Nicky Law into the middle and playing two wingers.

Marc McNulty is hoping to return to the squad following the serious dead leg he suffered ten days ago clattering into Fleetwood goalkeeper Chris Neal. James Hanson has an outside chance.

McCall said: “We’re fairly positive Nults will be available for selection. It’s a bad knock and a sore one but it’s not a muscle strain where he can hurt himself.”
