NICKY Law admits he is embarrassed that he hasn’t broken his duck yet since returning to City.

The attacking midfielder has been an influential creative source in the unbeaten run that has taken Stuart McCall’s side into second spot.

But Law is still to open his goal-scoring account – a fact he is all too aware of.

“If I’m honest, I’m slightly embarrassed about it,” he said. “One has got to land for me to tap in but it’s just not happened yet.

“I went close in the first half last week and skimmed the post. So the chances are there.

“I’d be more worried if they weren’t but I just need one to go in off my backside or something like that. The manager is on me every day to score.

“I’m enjoying my football and I’m sure that first goal will come.

“And when it does, I’ll probably just walk back to the centre circle in huge relief rather than celebrate!”

Law’s breakthrough could coincide with the thumping that he feels City are overdue to dish out to some unsuspecting opponent.

Shrewsbury’s poor start would suggest they could be the fall guys at Valley Parade tomorrow – but the midfielder is acutely aware of the pitfalls of taking anyone lightly.

Law added: “Everyone will expect us to win which makes it very dangerous.

“Look at Bolton last week losing at home to Oxford. I’m sure they would have been on a lot of people’s bets to win that.

“You can’t relax for a minute in this league. We know that and the manager keeps us focused.

“He doesn’t like it if you mention the league table. His message is always game by game and that’s how we are taking it.

“There are 35 games still to go – that’s a hell of a long way. But to be 11 unbeaten is fantastic at any level.

“We take pride in it and rightly so. Every week sharpens your focus that we are unbeaten and we want to keep it going.

“Let’s go on a huge unbeaten run and why not, because we are certainly good enough to do that. But we’ll need to score more goals.”

City’s change in their style of play continues to win plaudits. For Law, who worked under McCall with Motherwell and Rangers as well as previously at Valley Parade, it is something to savour.

He believes the insistence on getting the ball down and passing has strengthened the self-belief within the squad.

“The way we play you have to trust your team-mates,” he said.

“We try and play from the back and that starts with Doyler (Colin Doyle), the two centre halves and full backs.

“You have to trust them to look after the ball because it’s quite high risk at times.

“We don’t try and over-play, I wouldn’t say that. But it just takes one bit of sloppiness and that could be costly.”

Boasting the division’s tightest defence at present, City have not needed to rattle in the goals to maintain results. But Law knows they need to find their scoring boots quickly.

“It’s great to be in the top two but I’m hoping we can make it a lot more comfortable in the next few weeks.

“We’ve got players who can score goals and get double figures in this league and I include myself in that.

“I see it every day in training. There are good finishers here.”
