CITY are calling for Valley Parade’s largest turn-out of the season this weekend as they eye a fourth straight win.

Stuart McCall’s second-placed side host Shrewsbury as League One’s only remaining unbeaten team.

They have won successive games in the league against Fleetwood and Chesterfield and followed that up with another Checkatrade Trophy victory over Bury on Tuesday.

The club hope their current form will encourage fans to come out in force on Saturday.

Valley Parade league crowds currently average 17,521 after five games – about 500 down on last season.

An audience of 18,558 watched the season-opener against Port Vale but that had dropped to 16,759 for Fleetwood’s visit nine days ago, although that was in midweek.

Chief operating officer James Mason said: “It’s been a wonderful start to the season and two back-to-back victories have certainly helped. Another win on Tuesday has just maintained that momentum.

“Those that haven’t been down to the Northern Commercials Stadium are missing a treat. Some of the football has been the best we’ve seen for a lot of years.

“From our side of the fence, everything is on the up behind-the-scenes – sponsorship and banqueting is great.

“We’d really like to see if we can get the biggest crowd of the season on Saturday against Shrewsbury. It’s a game that could cement our place right up there at the top.

“People are on holiday at the start and you expect that. But we’ve sold around the 18,000 season-ticket mark and it would be lovely to see every one of them coming along to cheer the team on.

“We know we’ve got well over 2,500 under-11s. We appreciate they can’t always come to the evening matches but it would be great to have the loudest crowd so far with all the kids being inspired by their heroes.”
