CITY aim to have another goalkeeper in place by the time they return from Scotland.

Joe Murphy of Huddersfield is among the possible targets to compete with Ben Williams for next season's starting jersey.

And Phil Parkinson is hopeful that City will have a second stopper on board by the end of next week, when they head north of the border to face Motherwell and St Mirren.

Parkinson said: "We've got Ben on contract for another year but we're going to look at definitely bringing in another one. We have options.

"We are working on several things and there's always the option of a loan. I'd imagine by the time we come back from Scotland we will have got a deal finalised.

"Joe Murphy is on our list but he's one of a number of keepers we're looking at."

The former Republic of Ireland international, who previously had lengthy spells with Scunthorpe and Coventry, joined the Terriers a year ago.

But he could not unseat Alex Smithies and played only four games last season – two of those in the Capital One Cup.

Murphy, 33, was signed by Chesterfield on an emergency loan in the League One play-offs in May after Keighley-born Tommy Lee suffered an ankle injury.

He played in the semi-final second leg at Preston but gave away a penalty and conceded a goal from the halfway line in a 3-0 loss to the eventual promotion winners.

Alex Cairns, who was released by Leeds at the end of the season, is currently training with City.

The 22-year-old made only one senior appearance – as a second-half substitute – in four years at the club. He went on the club's pre-season tours for the last two summers to Slovenia and Italy and gained experience on loan at non-league Stalybridge.

But Cairns suffered personal tragedy last November when his 16-year-old younger brother Blake died in a car crash near Doncaster.

Parkinson admitted the prospect of bringing Jordan Pickford back to Valley Parade for a second loan spell is unlikely.

The England under-20 international, who played 34 games for City last season, is earmarked to back up first choice Costel Pantilimon if Vito Mannone leaves the Stadium of Light.

Bantams boss Parkinson said: "The indications are that Jordan is going to stay with Sunderland and fight for the number one shirt. I'm not surprised because he's a very good keeper.

"Jordan did very well with us but there are other ones out there. We know that Valley Parade is a good platform for young players, as we've seen with Reachy (Adam Reach) and him."

Meanwhile, City have handed a two-year deal to American prospect Jonathan Lewis.

The 18-year-old striker will initially train with the Bantams’ youth squad and play reserve-team football in the forthcoming campaign.

Lewis has joined from Fort Lauderdale in Florida after being recommended to City by RIASA (Richmond International Academic & Soccer Academy), where former Bantams player Mark Ellis plays a key role.

The youngster has previously trained and played with Fulham’s under-21s as well as Middlesbrough and York City’s under-19 squads.
