ANDREW Davies admits he still feels City could have achieved more last season.

City’s defensive lynchpin is in talks over a new contract as he heads into what he believes will be the best years of his career.

But there is still that niggling feeling of what might have been after narrowly missing out on the top six.

Davies said: “Nobody can be happy going off in the summer and not being involved in the play-offs.

“I remember when we drew at Sheffield United. It was a good performance after what had happened to us against Bristol City (losing 6-0 at home) – but deep down I was a bit gutted because I knew then that it was out of our reach.

“We’re not getting any younger and we want to be in that league above. That’s where we feel we should be.

“It’s upsetting but it is what it is. We grafted this year and tried our hardest.

“We’ve shown what we are capable of and I believe next year we will have another push.”

Davies can still look back fondly on City’s FA Cup run and believes those memories will be indelibly printed in the minds of the players for years to come.

“They were special days that will stick with you always,” he added.

“I’ve not watched Chelsea back again since the actual day but it is by far the best game of my career. It was something that will make me smile forever.

“That was such a brilliant occasion but there have been others as well.

“We beat Sunderland 2-0 in front of our home fans and that was a massive result against a Premier League side.

“Then there was the atmosphere at the home game against Reading and that just reminded you what a fantastic club this is.

“Getting to the quarter-finals was unbelievable. It was a shame we got beaten but there are a lot of positives about the hard work that got us there.”

The T&A understands that the new deal on the table for the defender is heavily appearance-related because of the chunk of matches that Davies has missed each season with injuries.

But the 30-year-old, City’s second longest-serving player behind James Hanson, insists he feels stronger than ever.

He said: “Little niggles here and there don’t knock me. I know how hard I work personally and how much the team puts in.

“Through a season, you’re going to have so many ups and downs as a club. That’s the way it is.

“But I’m coming out the end of the year smiling.”
