CARETAKER boss Dave Robertson has been told the job will be his if he can get Peterborough winning again.

City's visit to London Road tomorrow will double as a first audition for Robertson, who stepped up following Darren Ferguson's departure last weekend.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has been inundated with 200 applications for the vacancy but has promised Robertson a fair crack at it, stressing that previous managerial experience is irrelevant.

On-loan City striker Aaron Mclean has been assisting him with the coaching – along with former Peterborough playmaker Grant McCann, who has just left Linfield to return.

MacAnthony, who says he will not approach Rotherham over Steve Evans, believes Posh are in safe hands for now with "three guys who would do anything for the club".

Robertson said: "The chairman mentioned Aaron Mclean helping out and I thought that was a brilliant idea."

Mclean has opted not to be present in the dugout as Posh try to bounce back from a dismal performance at MK Dons. That 3-0 defeat, watched by 1,700 away fans, was the final straw with Ferguson as far as MacAnthony was concerned.

Robertson was promoted from academy chief but has no playing background or experience of coaching at a senior level.

The 40-year-old said: "I think I'm ready and the chairman obviously thinks I'm ready or he would have asked someone else to take charge.

"I would like the opportunity to be the next manager and I will be working hard to make sure I at least give the chairman a hard decision.

"But it's not just about me right now. It's about the team and the staff getting the club back on track.

"I can promise the playing squad will play with pride, passion and commitment. That's the least the Posh fans deserve.

"I can also promise attacking football because that's the way we do things at this club. The players will be given the freedom to express themselves and will play with smiles on their faces.

"It's a big game for us and we want to get London Road bouncing."

Robertson is expected to make changes for his dugout debut. The versatile Joe Newell should be available after a groin injury.
