Do we want to be 'a sleepy old town'

9:13pm Saturday 23rd February 2013

Sir, Why do we keep on seeing letters in this column from people who are against a new supermarket?

What’s not to like about Morrisons coming to Wallingford, unless, of course, you don’t want competition with Waitrose, more car parking spaces, 300 more jobs, another petrol station and a boost to the economy of the town?

Now we see the project will be held up by the water table. What next — a rare plant or creature living there? I guess I can understand the letters from Old Moor Close as it’s next door, but, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why local shopkeepers are getting the hump.

What proof is there that people won’t shop in Wallingford as some already travel to Didcot so Morrisons will be nearer.

Do we really want to become, if we haven’t already, a sleepy old town?
