WIMBLEDON 2 BRADFORD CITY 1
Stunned City fell to a stoppage-time goal at bottom club Wimbledon this afternoon.
The Bantams were on course for a second away win a week when Garry Thompson fired his fourth goal of the season.
But Wimbledon equalised with seven minutes left – and then won it in dramatic fashion in the third minute of added time.
The first half was a dour affair not helped by fussy referee Steve Bratt and the bobbly surface.
Toby Ajala, Wimbledon’s best player, finally had the first real shot on target after 57 minutes.
But two minutes later City were ahead. Kyel Reid’s ball into the box was misjudged by Alan Bennett and Thompson seized on his poor back-header to comfortably beat veteran keeper Neil Sullivan.
Thompson could have had another a minute later and Reid also went close as City looked to take control.
But Wimbledon’s subs made a difference to the home side – and two combined for an 83rd-minute equaliser.
Pim Balkestein crossed into a crowded box towards top scorer Jack Midson but the decisive touch appeared to come off Bantams left back Ryan Dickson.
Worse followed in stoppage time when Ajala’s corner was headed home by Gary Alexander. Hardly the way for City to head to Wembley.
4:53pm
Decent inswinger by Ajala but Jones heads away at near post. It's another corner and this one is IN - ALEXANDER 2-1 to Wimbledon
4:52pm
Wimbledon force their first corner of the game - in the 92nd minute.
4:51pm
City chance to counter wasted by miscued pass from Hanson.
4:50pm
Three added minutes to play.
4:48pm
Hanson cannot get any contact on Darby cross. City pushing for another goal.
4:48pm
Wimbledon's subs have made a difference, adding pace and an edge to their play.
4:47pm
City will be kicking themselves for letting the lead slip. Trying hard now for a second.
4:43pm
1-1. MIDSON appears to get touch from cross but Davies also got touch. Wells come on for Reid.
4:41pm
Sainte-Luce's pace is putting City on the back foot. But another promising run breaks down with a tired-looking shot from Pell.
4:39pm
Nelson wins important header from Sainte-Luce.
4:39pm
Flurry from Wimbledon. Sainte-Luce low cross cut out by Davies.
4:36pm
Thompson leaps to meet Darby cross but cannot direct his header.
4:35pm
Midson looking sharp since coming on for Wimbledon but still nothing to trouble Duke yet.
4:29pm
Balkestein makes important tackle on edge of box on Jones.
4:29pm
Reid continues to see a lot of the ball and wins another corner off right back Meades. Been a good battle between them.
Balkestein rises highest in the pack to nod away Jones' kick.
4:25pm
City make their first change after 66 minutes as Hanson replaces Gray.
4:24pm
Wimbledon throw all in by making two more subs. Balkestein and Sainte-Luce replace Mitchel-King and Yussuff.
4:23pm
City win their sixth corner of game as pressure stays on home side. But nothing comes from it.
4:21pm
Wimbledon replace Moore with Midson.
4:20pm
Thompson almost has another but drives wide, then Reid fires across goal. Suddenly City have come alive.
4:20pm
Reid pumped ball forward, mistake by Bennett and THOMPSON finishes with neat half-volley. His fourth goal of the season.
4:18pm
GOAL.... THOMPSON 1-0 to City.
4:16pm
Cleared as far as Ajala who's dipping half-volley is held by Duke. First genuine shot on target of the game after 57 minutes.
4:15pm
Free-kick for Wimbledon in good position.
4:14pm
Ajala robs Reid and beats Davies on dangerous run but his cross flies into crowd. Run does lift the home fans though.
4:11pm
Wimbledon clear under pressure.
Crowd is 4,320 with 621 away fans.
4:11pm
City free-kick 30 yards out after Gray is pulled down. Reid's effort is poor but deflected behind for corner.
4:05pm
Reid opens the second half with charge from halfway line and wayward shot.
3:49pm
Half-time 0-0
3:47pm
Only one added minute. City try to make it count from Darby's throw-in but ball cleared from Davies.
3:46pm
But again there's nothing to show from it.
3:46pm
Reid wins one more corner for City as half-time approaches.
3:46pm
Ref's constant whistling preventing the game from flowing.
3:41pm
Ajala tries to find room for a shot inside the City box but solid defending closes the door.
3:40pm
Alexander is the first name in ref's book for something of nothing.
3:38pm
Duke long free-kick nodded down by Thompson and Atkinson fires half-volley over bar.
3:36pm
Now they break dangerously and Nelson does well to stop Pell getting return pass from Alexander in box. Shouts for hand ball but he used his chest well.
3:35pm
Reid, who is getting booed by home fans after earlier foul, wins City's third corner but Dons get it away easily.
3:33pm
Sullivan again very positive to claim Dickson's long throw-in. Still sprightly for 42...
3:31pm
Reid wins soft free-kick to left of Wimbledon box. Jones free-kick well taken by Sullivan. Davies and Gray both down after colliding with each other but able to continue a bit groggily.
3:27pm
Good skill from Atkinson to find Reid, whose cross is glanced well wide by Gray.
3:24pm
Dickson gets pocket picked by Ajala on halfway line but recovers well to thwart Pell with sliding tackle. City counter and Atkinson strikes shot well from distance but it's always rising over.
3:19pm
Alexander looks five yards offside as ball comes to him but flag stays down. City see off the danger but Parkinson livid with fourth official.
3:19pm
Referee with an unfortunate assist for Wimbledon. Jones pass hits Steve Bratt and drops for Pell to run
3:18pm
Great cross from Reid after decent move down City's left. Gray flings himself at it but can't get a touch.
3:12pm
Low cross from Pell cut out by Davies, Sweeney tries luck from 25 yards and doesn't miss by much.
3:11pm
Reid wins header, gets return from Thompson, then launches ambitious volley. Well struck but comfortably wide of goal.
3:07pm
Gray breaks promisingly but is stopped by fine challenge by Mitchel-King.
3:06pm
Sullivan punches away as Jones' deep kick looks for Davies.
3:06pm
City win another on the other side.
3:05pm
Sharp work from Thompson wins first corner for City in third minute.
3:02pm
City kick off. Good turn-out of away fans behind the dug-outs.
2:18pm
Neil Sullivan, now 42, is in goal for the Dons as they look for a first win at home since October.
AFC WIMBLEDON: Sullivan, Meades, Hussey, Sweeney, Bennett, Mitchel-King, Ajala, Pell, Alexander, Yussuff, S Moore. Subs: Cummings, Long, Sainte-Luce, Midson, Strutton, Balkestien, Jaimez-Ruiz.
2:16pm
Same team as Tuesday good call PP don't change a winning side. No Connell involved tho?? #bcafc

This is prob not a good time for Wimbledon to be playing us, off back of dodgy spell & playing 4 cup final places! #bcafc #IPredictAWin

2:00pm
City name an unchanged starting line-up for their last game before Wembley.
Having impressively seen off Wycombe in midweek, Phil Parkinson saw no need to tinker for the visit to bottom club Wimbledon.
That means Andrew Davies makes his second start in four days after a solid return from his four-month injury lay-off on Tuesday.
There is a change on the bench where Zavon Hines replaces Alan Connell.
CITY: Duke, Darby, Nelson, Davies, Dickson, Atkinson, Jones, Doyle, Reid, Thompson, Gray. Subs: Hanson, Wells, McHugh, Hines, Good, Turgott, McLaughlin.

Think we need to forget promotion now unless we can turn it around in the league now and hope a few teams above us lose.
Not enough in front of goal YET AGAIN!
We are not killing games off. A goal scorer should of been brought in and this is gonna cost us.
League 2 next season by looks of it.

Although he must have been seething at the ref's decision, that cost us the game, I was impressed with PP's level headed response on the radio afterwards.
In a perverse way, today's reverse, gives me more optimism for next Sunday....because that's how life pans out.
We'll go into the game with even less expectation, and you should always expect the unexpected!
Here's hoping!

Any team who finds itself trailing in the league to such footballing giants as Burton, Cheltenham, Exeter, Fleetwood and now...Morecambe! should be truly embarrasssed.
Whats the betting we beat Swansea then lose to Dagenham.

This is about a good squad of players for league 2 level not being able to beat a squad of players who in all honesty are very poor and will be back in the conference next season.
If we are serious about promotion, you must win games like today whether you have a cup final next week or not!
Big fan of PP, but really don't know why we did not get a goal scorer in January.
The players, management and whole club have been fantastic this season and brought more joy and delight to me and all the fans than we have seen for 10 years at VP, but I am absolutely disgusted with today's result. Bottom of the table should be beaten convincingly by us!

If we lose 7-0 next week, which when you look at Swansea on song, we may well do (none the less of a fantastic achievement for getting to the final), the players and coachig staff are going to be down to earth with a big one.
Then they might start waking up. Somethig they should have done the minute the Villa away game was over.
They should certainly be looking down and be well aware that 13 points can be closed quite quickly by teams below you when you're on a league run like we are.
Not sure about PPs rising stock just at the moment.

Being beaten today is no big deal.
As PP said, cup runs and good league form rarely go together.Annoying, I agree but, sadly, a fact of life.
Wimbledon will be forgotten by Monday. Enjoy Wembley - that will live in the memory.

Today's final result was indeed a sickening loss. The team absolutely should have been organised and committed enough not to have conceeded anything in the last 8-10 minutes. The reality and facts are that the end of the season us the only true place to properly review the measure of all things connected with this squad and management team. Promotion is the fundamental benchmark. It will not happen automatically this season. The Play offs are the only route left. Seventh is essential and still achieveable. The League season part 2 starts on Feb 27th. Nothing less than seventh will be acceptable...it can be done and it must be done. Our Cup form shows a 2 legged Semi Final and a Wembley Final can be achieved. It must now happen twice in one season.....and everybody knows it....keep optimistic as the players and management will need that support. If they don't manage it then the review will properly start by all concerned.....somebo
dy will finish seventh after all. If it is City....then I think we will suceed.

He knows he is being watched by higher league clubs and at the moment, it's all about Nahki Wells and not City. I say if a big club come in, then let him go. Connell deserves the chance to start every game.

The starkest fact from the comments so far is the correct assumption that we have gone wrong by not signing a proven striker. However, not one person has mentioned the fact in the January transfer window we signed a striker from the champoinship who has rarely played below that level.
That is how poor a signing Andy Gray is. He's not even mentioned. He's not in anyone's thoughts.
The cup run has made us £2.3 million. Use it wisely City, because the Gray signing was anything but wise.

Absolutely agree. Swindon got Benson last season, and it got them promoted! Port Vale have got Hughes this season, It will see them over the line. We are crying out for a goalscorer! Where was ours in January to make that bit if difference! We have the dollars now!

This year apart from defence we've signed no-one who's created any impact in striking or attacking midfield positions - how often have we come up against a team with a on-loan striker who seems to have scored something like 4 in 5?
I've been patient with Gray and have been defending him, but he's not having any impact on the team at all and we simply do not have time to allow unfit players to get upto match fitness.
IMO the likelihood for the season is we will run out of games and will fail to close the gap. I don't see how the current crop of players can go on what would have to be championship form to just get into the play-offs.

Time will tell after next week how much this teams wants it . . . we need a long unbeaten run ala 1996. We need more firepower . . . most promotion rivals have signed quality forward players . . . .get a decent loan in !
A farce isn't it ? supporters are moaning that we are having a crap season but hey ! we have only reached A MAJOR CUP FINAL. for 102 years so i wish we could be this bad every year because out of 55yrs watching City i reckon 40 of those were played in the bottom 2 divisions.I make no excuses for highlighting the numbers, hope we can keep the fantastic 10,000 supporters next season. cheers.
I fear Wembley has split the supporters though - between so called loyal supporters and 'the plastics'. I was derided by supporters for sitting in their seats at Gillingham the other week - we were sat in the right seats and the STH had been sitting in the wrong seats all season - but were accused of being johnny come lately supporters . . . .. takes the shine off it all .

Ha hahaha, bunch of dumb **** coaching, How are you gonna bench your top scorer at 18 GOALS , 18 **** goals in a must win game, and insultantly bring him on for 5 embarrassing minutes is beyond my thinking. Also, why is it that Hanson never ever sits out a complete game. This is a JOKE....... I hope Bradford never ever get promoted......

And hopefully will put the club in a stronger position for many years to come. I can understand the frustration because with this poor league but be patient, our fortunes are changing. Is it only me that thinks a Wembley final Will put a couple of thousand on next year's season ticket holders?
audal wrote:I agree Audal. Promotion means everything to me - I've seen many poor seasons since 1983 but I have never seen (and perhaps may never see again) my team in a major final. My 5 yo is a supporter for life over this season - despite City losing everytime he has seen them at home this season (doh).
Come on City - one big effort against Swansea ! CTID

Same old failings to me; not ruthless enough, whether it's in terms of taking our chances, or lapses in concentration which allows the opposition back into matches that we are seemingly in control of.
As a result our opponents continually pick up results against us that they didn't deserve.
Two or three consecutive wins and the situation can change very quickly, and the main source of motivation if I was a player, is that there are not 7 teams better than us in this division.

I am questioning seriously PP decision making here also. At 1-0 late on close the game up my bringing on another defender not a forward.
severe question marks about Gray ahead of Connell who was not even on the bench? Questions about the signing of Gray? Past it by a few years and nothing to add physically.
Questions now over the match fitness of Hanson and Wells who both must start. Wells on bench tells me PP does not like his attitude or is saving his fitness but what comes first attitude or 18 goals? I fitness created by having him travel some 800 miles or so this week on a coach to sit on the bench. Will he actually be match fit for Wembley. What has Mc Hugh done wrong, resting his legs maybe but for what?? Is he likely to start at Wembley? Ravenhill is right out of favour now so appears to have no future yet Jones at35 has played most of the season?
MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT MANAGEMENT GENERALLY AND I JUST WONDER HAS PP GOT AHEAD OF HIMSELF?

McHugh was only ever supposed to come in for a few games as cover, he gave a selection headache by playing so well but PP will always go with experience over youth if available. Hence the Davies recall, possibly to early by the sound of the last 20 minutes on Saturday.,
Hanson and Wells have both been carrying knocks recently, resting them last Tuesday was classed as a masterstroke, we can't now do a 360 and say it was the wrong thing this week.
I'm still finding the Gray/Connell situation baffling, in fact the whole Connelll situation in itself is a conundrum. Joint top scorer for last seasons champions, goal to minute on pitch ratio is best at the club yet still can't get a place on the bench. There will be reasons, we just don't know them.
Finally, anyone supporting City for a few years will have known we were getting nothing from the AFCW game, they will now also be slightly optimistic about getting something from the final

If we were going to play anyone but Jones in there I personally would be looking at trying to give Scott Brown more game time, Ravenhill's City career is more or less over and Brown is young, cheap and has years in front of him, RR is a mid to bottom of the table CM these days and not something we want to be pushing as an alternative.

We all have our own ideas and opinions, PP will have had his reasons for all of the above.

Brown could be very similar to Doyle/Jones in that he too may not make bursting runs into the box, oh for some hindsight when trying to tie Syers down, although I am led to believe the player didn't make this easy for City and was wanting away no matter what.
