Taking a dim view of Vicarage Road

My great view of Vicarage Road last week – except the goal, the pitch, the corner flag My great view of Vicarage Road last week – except the goal, the pitch, the corner flag

Apparently the FA Cup third-round attendances were the highest for 30 years.

Well excuse me for not decking out the bunting at Vicarage Road.

These bumper crowd figures must have passed Watford by – the turn-out last Saturday was 4,500 below average, even with a cut-price ticket offer.

Take nothing away from the fantastic travelling army who once again negotiated the M1 road works/closed junctions in fine numbers.

And the 1,200 City followers made enough noise for 12,000, keeping up a constant volume even when their side went three down and were looking down the barrel of a possible hammering.

The defiant late flurry that pulled back one goal – and, until the assistant’s flickering flag, the promise of another – was reward for those fans and ensured they headed home upbeat in defeat.

But forgive me my Victor Meldrew moment.

It’s difficult to get caught up in the pizzazz of the “greatest club cup competition in the world” (copyright ITV) when you are sat in a condemned stand, accompanied by the “worst view of a club competition in the world” (copyright me and every other unfortunate hack sent to report on Watford matches).

The view of one goal was obscured by a stanchion which, thoughtfully, ran right down the middle of the net. Anything not scored in the corners was down to guess work.

As for corners on the right side, forget it. The radio gantry, that was clearly bought off ebay when Checkpoint Charlie was dismantled, ensured there was no chance of seeing that edge of the pitch.

And then there were the dug-outs, with their roofs so wide that not only were the management and substitutes kept dry but also the wingers, full backs and possibly even central midfield.

Like trying to watch a film when the fat bloke in front of you waddles off to the toilet, there were significant chunks of the game that passed the whole written press by.

If there was a ten-man touchline brawl between the dug-out and the visiting end, then I apologise for missing it completely.

This, of course, was in a Championship stadium. Not Dagenham or Barnet or Hereford but a club established in the second tier.

A trip to face a team 48 places higher up the ladder should be something to be savoured. A day out away from the week in, week out drudgery of League Two.

Instead it felt like clambering through a building site when everyone else has knocked off for lunch.

And one reporter, a patronising London-type, even had the cheek to ask if it felt “good” to be watching City play “someone like Watford” again. Yes sir, begging your pardon sir, can I now take a shiny shilling for my big journey back oop north…

He’s quite right of course. Who would want to be back at Valley Parade this weekend in a fine 25,000 stadium with a vista of the whole city not just the pitch, when you can watch one pass in three round a stanchion?

The magic of the cup (another cliché that ITV are contractually obliged to drop at least five times an hour) somewhat passed me by.

But then let’s face it, the whole FA Cup thing has become a myth.

Third-round day used to be a special landmark in the football calendar but not any more.

Wigan getting knocked out by an offside deflection may have been the jaw-dropping shock on the highlights show but it’s hardly going to make the opening credits for the next 20 years a la Ronnie Radford.

The Manchester derby was a belting free- for-all but it hardly screamed FA Cup. In fact, the only saving grace for another weekend of predictable scores was Thierry Henry’s emotional return to Arsenal life.

His fifth touch of the ball which sunk Leeds – and the unbridled passion in the celebrations – sprinkled some genuine stardust on otherwise barren surroundings.

But then why should we get excited by a competition that is so coveted that the final this year will kick off at 5.15pm sandwiched between the usual fixture-list of league matches?

Remember the sepia-tinged memories of the FA Cup build-up lasting from dawn til dusk? That’s old hat, grandad.

This time you’ll have about 25 minutes from the end of City’s swansong against Swindon.

Anyone keen to join in with Kathryn Jenkins for Abide with Me will have to leave Valley Parade at half-time … Henry offered the most appropriate summing up after Monday’s game when told he had been named man of the match by the TV viewers.

It’s a joke, he said. I couldn’t have put it better.

well said;Watford's ground is a shed akin to those pre that fateful day at VP.

Should there not be a standard set for grounds.

Agree completely about the FA CUP: RUINED EVER SINCE MAN UTD were somehow allowed to miss the third round to grab ever more cash in a game which meant nothing to most true fans of football per se.

Good article Simon.

A few things have to be said here...

Yes, I agree. Our stadium isn't great, however, the way in which it is described in this article is pushing a it a little. It has 3 sides, since one got knocked down as it was deemed unsafe, and is not in the greatest condition, however it is not so awful that you cannot see what is going on; at least, I've never before heard anyone complaining about this before reading this article.

Secondly, no disrespect to Bradford at all, but do you expect the Watford fans to pack out a stadium and be full of noise in a FA Cup tie against Bradford? It isn't exactly exciting, and as we aren't the loudest fans usually, it was to be expected we would be quieter than usual.

Fair play to the Bradford fans, who were very loud up until 3-1, who then could not be heard until 4-2.

Good luck for the rest of the season!

What a stupid column.
Mr Parker has it escaped your attention the gates at the two FA cup games at Valley Parade this season?
.
Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones and all that.

3 side of Watfords ground are on par or better than Valley Parade. One stand is crap but they have no need to spend millions on it when they can't fill it. Maybe we should have taken this view before spending millions on a corner stand used about twice.

I'd rather be in the Championship with a substandard ground than in League Two with a decent one. Seems like it was Mr Parker's time of the month when he wrote this article...!!

TVOR, has it escaped your attention that Simon Parker is referring to the FA cup THIRD round! To the best of my knowledge, our two previous FA Cup games at VP were not 3rd round ties. People who live in glass houses... Oh!, and he who lives by the sword..... and all that.

Watfords ground is not a dump and if we had played Watford at home we would have struggled to get half of the attendance.
The whole piece is a load of garbage but twist it how you want, you usually do.

Erm, and which bit have I 'twisted' in my post above TVOR? In fact I am struggling to work out what bit of your response to my post is connected in anyway to what I said.

If we had managed to gain respectable crowds for the first and second round of the cup we would be in a situation where we could point the finger at Watford, but as we didn't we don't.
.
Do you agree with Mr Parker? Did you attended the game. Anyone who has been to Watford knows that the view for 3 sidf the ground is good to very good. Slating them based on one stand and not getting a full house when playing a team 2 leagues below is laughable.

The first two rounds are irrelevent to SP's comment about FA Cup third-round attendances being the highest for 30 years but the 3rd round attendance at Watford being 4500 below average.
.
From the photo that SP provided in support of his claim that there were 'significant chunks of the game that passed the whole written press by', then I am prepared to take his word for it. Call that agreeing with him if you like.
.
Yes I attended that game.
.
A few questions to you now TVOR: Why do you spend so much energy defending a criticism of a Championship Club from Hertfordshire but take every opportunity you can to criticise the Club that you -I assume- support?
.
You claim SP slated Watford based on one stand and not getting a full house when playing a team 2 leagues below' DID HE? are you the same TVOR that accuses posters of 'twisting' things? Where did he criticise them for not getting 'a full house'?
.
Finally, can you answer the question I asked you in my previous post, I'll repeat: 'which bit have I ''twisted'' in my post above TVOR?' you didn't support your accusation in your response.

Went to the game... Had a great view of the pitch from the away end... Find it hard to have a huge amount of sympathy for the restricted view suffered by a journo who got into the ground on a free press pass... Sorry!
