The season of goodwill to all men? Not if you’re a football manager.

It seems that every time you switch on the telly, there’s a headline of another sacking.

Even the Premier League is not immune to the madness – with two more bosses out the door.

But as amusing as it is to see Jamie Redknapp passed off as an impartial pundit when slaughtering Andre Villas-Boas, his comments this week are not the daftest.

For that honour, I’d point you towards Graham Westley, the “Marmite” gaffer at Stevenage.

He has come up with a plan to keep managers in their job for longer – by docking ten points from any club who axe their boss during the season.

Westley claims this will stop chairmen pulling the trigger so readily because they know the consequences. He also believes it will encourage managers to give more youngsters a go because they aren’t looking over their shoulder.

A sound idea... unless you’re bottom of the table, the crowd are on the back of the boss and confidence has hit the floor.

Stuck in that scenario, the club would be forced to bumble along with a system that’s clearly failing. Or, alternatively, take a ten-point hit that will make their position even more desperate.

Now, what were those wise words Redknapp junior was saying about the bloke who took his dad’s job?
