A total of 248 Test wickets – not bad for someone who would, in his own words, “wang it down and hope for the best”.

The boy who lives in Baildon done good all right.

Matthew Hoggard can look back on some impressive memories as he pulls up stumps on his career.

The hat-trick in Bridgetown to rattle out West Indies for 94 stands out; a match- winning “seven for” to win a Test in South Africa ... or his nightwatchman duties when he would block up one end.

There were also 15 years of service for Yorkshire which, despite a sour end, had still yielded 668 first-class wickets.

Awarded an MBE in the 2006 New Year’s Honours list after the Ashes success, Hoggard was also named one of the five Wisden cricketers of the year.

When his international career was brought to a shuddering halt three years later, he stood seventh on the all-time list of England bowlers. Only Fred Trueman had taken more from the Broad Acres.

Hoggy might be too modest to crow about it but on his day, there have been few finer swing bowlers in this county – or country.
