Clubs not getting their fair share

By Simon Parker »

So much for a money-making day in the sun at Wembley.

The play-off finalists barely make enough money from their trip to the national stadium to cover any win bonuses.

Someone in the know gave me a breakdown of how the gate receipts are divvied up.

Apparently, the Football League take half and Wembley another 29 per cent.

So that leaves around 21 per cent – about a fifth of the total pot – to be shared by the two clubs concerned. That’s small beer compared with the £65-70,000 City scooped from the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint and hardly the anticipated Wembley windfall to set you up for years There you have it then.

Stuart McCall will just have to make sure of a top-three finish come May and leave all that play-off nonsense – and expense – to someone else.
