Radio double act are a Wright laugh

By Blake Richardson »

What’s your favourite sports programme? Soccer AM, Boots N’ All, Match of the Day, Aussie Aerobics? The latter might have its knockers but the others…

I would argue the most entertaining sports programme isn’t even on tele, it’s on the radio. How many of you have listened to Adrian Durham and Ian Wright’s afternoon show on TalkSPORT? Riveting stuff and hilarious and frustrating in equal measure.

Wind-up merchant Durham is the most outrageously opinionated sports presenter you will ever have heard. His views range from the bizarre to the utterly ridiculous and each time I tune in he makes me so mad I find myself shouting at the car radio (well, it helps).

I’m sure he doesn’t believe half of what spills out of his mouth but chooses to play devil’s advocate to fan the flames of the debate.

Wrighty, who has never been frightened of coming forward with his opinion, is the voice of reason. His effervescent charm and happy-go-lucky attitude to life, set against the non-stop moaning of Durham, is a magic mix and there have been some legendary moments.

Like the time the pair were interviewing fellow TalkSPORT presenter George Galloway and Durham got his goat by poking fun at is relationship with Saddam Hussein.

Now, Durham can argue for Britain but he was out of his depth in a political barney with Galloway, who let him have it with both barrels, accusing Durham of defaming him live on air. After his diatribe he thanked Wrighty, saying he had the utmost respect for him, had a final dig at Durham by telling him he’d never heard of him and didn’t even know his name (cue a short burst of background laughter from Wrighty) and proceeded to hang up. Quality.

There was another beauty last week. Durham kicked off a debate, arguing that scoring goals was only a very small part of football. Wrighty was apoplectic as Durham spouted his nonsense, insisting he didn’t go to watch his beloved Peterborough to see them score.

Tune in on 1089 or 1053 AM, 4 to 7pm weekdays, and I promise, you’ll be hooked immediately.
