A guide to taking sides at Euro 2008

By Ben Barnett »

It’s upon us, the football event of the year, so who’re you cheering for?

There’s no home nation to hang your hat on, the hosts, Austria and Switzerland are hopeless, we’re going to think twice about screaming passionately for the Germans, the French and the Portuguese for obvious football and out-of-date historical reasons. So who does that leave?

The Dutch will pull in a few punters if only for the fans and that sea of Orange, even if their Total Football has been lost.

There’s Poland, Germany’s rivals of course and any country which offers the world such a fine range of beer as the Poles deserves a cheer.

Everyone’s singing the praises of Spain, their team consists of a fair few Premiership stars, and the Spanish should get a nod for putting up with hundreds of drunken British holidaymakers every year.

Croatia are part of the reason why we’re not there, no one can pronounce the names of the Russians or the Greeks and Italy have abandoned their tight shirts so that’s the female vote lost.

That leaves Czech Republic, Sweden Turkey and Romania, the latter two will probably crash and burn at the group stage. So from this very logical process of deduction, I’m going to plump for cheering on Sweden, a country of beautiful people and the meatballs you get at Ikea are to die for.
