Bradford schools a knockout success

Queensbury and Bradford Academy have two sides through to the regional finals of the the Carnegie Champion Schools’ rugby league tournament.

The local stages of the Yorkshire-wide knockout competition have now been completed, leaving 32 teams in each age group to contest the regional stages.

Queensbury’s year eight team defeated visitors Sherburn High (North Yorkshire) 30-0 in the first round to book a trip to Ossett (Wakefield), while Queensbury’s year 11 side had a 40-6 home win over Archbishop Sentamu (Hull) to earn a trip to Campsmount (South Yorkshire).

Bradford Academy’s year nine team had a 36-18 victory at Huntington (North Yorkshire) and will next face Freeston (Wakefield), while their year ten side travel to the same venue after a 26-12 home victory over Selby High (North Yorkshire).

Other schools to qualify are Tong (year seven), Thornton and Oakbank (year eight) and Appleton Academy (year nine).

Debutants in the competition included Bradford’s Immanuel College, whose year seven boys’ team went down 44-0 at Earlsheaton (Kirklees).
