Five primary school teams from Bradford and the surrounding district have reached the West Yorkshire area finals of the 2013 Drax Cup Under-Nines competition.

Farnham snatched a thrilling one-run victory in their last game against Southmere (140-4 to 139-2) to finish unbeaten and win the West Bradford School Games Network Partnership stage at Horton Church CC, leaving Springwood, who they beat 156-4 to 126-8 as runners-up. Lidget Green were third.

After a play-off between the highest-scoring teams, Westminster won 171-5 against Low Ash 131-1 in the Hanson Academy School Sports Partnership round robin at the Karmand Community Centre.

The two schools topped a group of eight teams after winning semi-finals against Peel Park and Thornbury.

Jack Summers, school games organiser for Hanson, said: “The Karmand Centre has excellent facilities and staged a brilliant event. All the teams showed real enthusiasm which made for an exciting and eventful day with some great cricket played.”

In the Accelerate Sports Partnership, St Stephen’s were the eventual winners despite tough opposition from All Saints and St Matthew’s in a round robin series of matches at Bierley CC and Tong High School featuring nine teams.

Two teams from Harden Primary qualified from a joint event involving seven schools from the Aire Valley and Oakbank School Sports Partnerships, held at Keighley CC on Wednesday 5 June.

The Bradford schools now wait to see if they will come up against each other in the regional finals at Pudsey St Lawrence CC on Thursday, with play due to start at 10am.
