Bradford youngsters nailed their colours to the mast as they took on the best of West Yorkshire, all in the name of Lloyds TSB National School Sports Week.

The West Yorkshire Youth Games rolled into Leeds Met University with 1,000 secondary school children taking part in a wide range of sports from athletics to boccia.

Separated into five camps - Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield - the youngsters not only did their best for their area but also learnt key Olympic and Paralympic values along the way.

Barry Holden, a teacher at Southfield School, took two gymnastic teams down and, after seeing one finish first, he was proud to help Bradford leave its mark on the competition.

“An event like this is very good for everyone in the area – and of course it makes it even better when you win something,” he said.

“Our gymnastics teams both did really well and to have one team finish first is great.

“We have been bringing a team down here for quite some time and have had a bit of success in the past, and everyone enjoys it.

“So we are really proud of what we have done and hopefully can have more success in the future.”

Waqaas Amaan, a pupil from Southfield School, was one of the kids taking part in Britain’s biggest school sport event.

And the 16-year-old could hardly believe his luck after helping the team to gymnastics gold.

“I am very pleased to have helped our team win the gymnastics and I am very proud of everyone,” he said.

“I do quite a bit of gymnastics so it was a lot of fun and I also met some new people and made some new friends.”
