Sister act win bronze for England
9:37pm Friday 2nd November 2012 in School Sports By Sports Desk
Woodhouse Grove badminton coach Dawn Johnson with sisters Sian and Helen Kelly
Sisters Sian and Helen Kelly teamed up as part of the England under-13s badminton team that won a bronze medal at an international tournament in Denmark.
The Woodhouse Grove School pupils played as a doubles partnership in the Greve Strands event.
The third-place finish was the second recent achievement for Sian, who won the All England under-17s doubles title earlier this year and just missed out in the singles when beaten in the final.
Woodhouse Grove’s focus on badminton has been driven by the appointment of Dawn Johnson as coach in September.
Johnson (pictured with the Kelly sisters) has two national titles to her name and has represented England over 30 times across different age categories.
The school’s depth of talent among students in a diversity of sports does not end there.
Sailor Dominic Daniel has embarked on a 12-month training programme in a 29er boat which should lead to a trial for the Royal Yachting Association Volvo national youth squad.
This is the entry level for the ultimate goal of Olympic squad selection.
