TERRY Brushwood may have lost his Bradford Amateur Matchplay crown but reaching the final meant he kept hold of a more coveted piece of silverware.

The Bingley St Ives member's semi-final win by one hole over Northcliffe's Rob Malloy meant he had already accumulated enough points to retain the Karl Curran Trophy despite his defeat to Cleckheaton's Martin Gaffney in the show-piece event at Keighley.

Brushwood became the first player to successfully defend the Bradford Union golfer of the year title since Rob Hillas back in 2005-06 and has now won the prize three times in the last four years.

His success also continued Bingley's dominance of the Trophy, with a player from their club having won the award six times in the last seven seasons.

Ironically, Brushwood did not win any of the major Bradford Union titles in 2017 but was consistent enough to accumulate points in all but one of the scoring competitions.

That saw him pip promising Woodhall Hills youngster Ben Rhodes by just three points in the standings.

Rhodes was also runner-up in the Captain's Salver – awarded to the most consistent player in Bradford Union Yorkshire Inter-District fixtures – to Cleckheaton's Oliver Tasker.

Gaffney's 2&1 final victory over Brushwood was the first time the Bradford Union skipper had won the matchplay crown. He beat Northcliffe's Jordan Clements in the semi-final by one hole.

Gaffney was unable to claim a matchplay double after losing his foursomes semi-final with Cleckheaton partner Chris Green, the pair going down 3&2 to Bingley's Andy Town and Hillas.

In the other semi-final Rhodes and substitute Jack Torbet were beaten 5&4 by Hollins Hall pair James Firth and Warren Kemp, who retained their crown after beating Town and Hillas by two holes.

In the Handicap Matchplay final, Baildon's Mark Hainsworth and Steve Metcalfe lost 2&1 to Simon Neath & Richard Martin.

Meanwhile, Cec Bloice scored a gross 66 round his home Cleckheaton course to win the Bradford Seniors Championship. Jimmy Sidney won the Veteran's Trophy with a 76.
