GOLFER of the year Terry Brushwood gave a special mention to competition and alliance secretary David Peat on receiving his award at the Bradford Union annual dinner.

The popular player won the Karl Curran Trophy for the second time, ensuring the silverware remained with a Bingley St Ives member for a fifth year out of the last six.

The coveted prize – formerly known as the T&A Golfer of the Year before it was renamed in honour of 2008 winner South Bradford player Curran, who died from skin cancer – is given to the most consistent player involving major scratch competitions organised by the district and county unions.

Speaking at the Midland Hotel dinner in Bradford, Brushwood praised Peat – a rare absentee at the function after being struck by illness on the day – for more than a decade's loyal service.

He said: "David Peat makes such a difference with all the hard work he puts in every year.

"He does a brilliant job and is an unsung hero of the Bradford Union."

Brushwood also thanked his club St Ives for their support, congratulated Scratch League champions Cleckheaton and praised Union team captain Martin Gaffney for his efforts in his first year at the helm succeeding long-serving stalwart Tim Wade.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire Union president Jonathan Plaxton highlighted the success and dedication of Bracken Ghyll's junior team in his speech.

After their team had enjoyed a surprise victory in the county Junior Club Championship at Middlesbrough, Daniel Pelkowski and Findlay Robertson came home from holiday to play in the national finals at Oxford.

Plaxton said: "Their success was a great example of Yorkshire grit and determination.

"Bradford can be proud of the team from Bracken Ghyll and with young men as committed as that, the Union will undoubtedly prosper."

The successful growth of Silsden Golf Club, which had been near to closing in 2014, was outlined as a big positive this year by Bradford Union president Colin Edwards, especially following the demise of Riddlesden GC in January of last year.
