A TALENTED youngster from Keighley finished runner-up in a European Junior Golf Tour event in Spain.

Competing in the under-eights category, Corey Canning came second after playing nine-hole rounds on three different courses.

The Stanbury Village School pupil shot 64 at Santana, 56 at Los Olivias Mijas and 58 at Torrequebrada, his aggregate score placing him behind Latvian girl Katrina Bulkovskis.

His success came after winning in a qualification event at Pryor Hayes Golf Club near Chester.

Corey's dad Cain, who was caddying for him, said: "He played fantastic and if it wasn't for one or two holes he could have won."

Corey, who is a junior member at Keighley Golf Club and goes for coaching with Roy Penney at Shay Grange, has already been playing golf for several years.

Cain said: "There were not enough competitions for juniors (locally) so we looked on-line.

"He played for the first time at Chester in the under-eights and qualified for Spain. Since then he has played in a few more tournaments and had a couple of seconds and a joint third. He's played excellently."

Now Corey is hoping to play in other European Junior Golf Tour events, with upcoming competitions at The Shire London and Goodwood.

He would love to follow in the footsteps of full European Tour winner Tommy Fleetwood, who once played on the junior version.
