TERRY BRUSHWOOD admits he is surprised to have won the Bradford Union golfer of the year crown due to his 'hit and miss' form this season.

The Bingley St Ives member has clinched the Karl Curran Trophy for the second time, meaning a player from his club has claimed the award five times in the last six years.

He finished well clear of runner-up Chris Green, of Cleckheaton, in the rankings, in which points are accrued in major district and inter-district events across the calendar.

Yet Brushwood said: "It's been a strange season. I won the matchplay, was second in the amateur strokeplay and sixth in the Bradford Open.

"I've been consistent without really playing great."

The experienced former Northcliffe and West Bradford player, who won the Jim Wade Trophy for the best combined results in the Bradford Amateur and Open, still featured prominently while altering his technique.

Along with club team-mate Andy Town, he has been going for lessons with Mark Pinkett at Cookridge Hall.

"I've not really felt at one with the game but I have been in the process of changing things with my swing," said Brushwood.

"It's been a bit hit and miss but it's starting to come together. My swing has been under plane and led to the shanks, so I've been working to get back on plane.

"It's a slow process implementing it under pressure. And I also have my son Toby to look after, who is really keen to play too."

The latest Karl Curran Trophy win continues Bingley St Ives' dominance of the competition, with Dane Bairstow (2011 and 2015), Will Whiteoak (2012) and Brushwood (2014) all lifting the coveted prize.

Yet this season marked the end of their stranglehold on the Bradford Union Scratch League title as Cleckheaton ended their three-year reign.

Brushwood admitted: "That was down to me really as I didn't win so many scratch games. But it was a short season as they cut the teams from seven to six.

"That ten or 12-point difference can be a big thing when the league is so tight but it did make for an interesting season."

St Ives still won the Bradford Team Championship and Brushwood is delighted to add to their silverware.

He said: "They are a great club and have a great junior section. I wouldn't want to play anywhere else."

Meanwhile, Green won the Captain's Salver, beating South Bradford's Andy Busfield in the competition based on performances for the Bradford Union in Yorkshire inter-district competitions.

The Cleckheaton player catapulted himself to the top of the rankings after winning the individual best gross trophy in the end-of-season Team Championship at Halifax Bradley Hall, his two rounds of 69 taking him to a plus-two handicap.
