BRANSHAW members who took up a special offer had extra reason to celebrate Danny Willett's surprise US Masters win.

The nation - and Yorkshire in particular - were left thrilled as the Sheffield-born ace became the first Briton to win the Augusta major since Nick Faldo 20 years ago.

And, thanks to professional Steven Dean's promotional deal before the tournament to give members their money back for any clubs bought from his shop if Willett won, it felt all the sweeter at Branshaw.

Captain Stephen Buckley, who won a set of Cobra irons himself, explained: "Smaller clubs have been struggling and it was just an idea our professional had to drum up a bit of business as it is hard to compete with bigger golf outlets.

"He sold three sets of brand new clubs, a driver and other clubs here and there, which amounted to about £2,500.

"Steven chose Danny as he is Yorkshire's top golfer – though I'm not sure he expected him to win!"

Willett took advantage of Jordan Spieth's extraordinary meltdown to win the famous green jacket by three shots ahead of playing partner Lee Westwood – who had Eldwick's Billy Foster on his bag – and the defending American champion.

While members were left quids in with their purchases, thankfully their club professional was not left out of pocket, having covered his outgoings with bets at the bookies on Willett.

Dean, who obtained best odds of 66-1 before the event, said: "Everyone finished up and thankfully I had some very happy customers.

"I really wanted him to win myself. He is Yorkshire's top golfer and one of the members knows him well.

"It's created a nice bit of publicity, especially after it's been a bit grim with the weather over the winter."

Dean will consider putting on a similar offer in the future, leaving members waiting with bated breath who he fancies for the US Open in June.

Having taken on his first pro job at Branshaw nearly two years ago, he joked: "Maybe now I'm also the club's number one tipster and should branch out into horse racing!"
