BINGLEY St Ives have had a golden 48 hours, winning both the Yorkshire Team Championship First Division at Hessle and retaining the Bradford & District Union Scratch League title.

Their victory in East Yorkshire – the first by a Bradford Union club since West Bowling in 1985 – qualifies St Ives for the National Team Championships at Brancepeth Castle, Durham on September 19-20.

After the morning round at Hessle, Bingley were third on 223, a shot behind Ilkley and Wheatley, with Rotherham, Pike Hills and Malton & Norton equal fourth on 224 and defending champions Cookridge Hall, hosts Hessle and Moor Allerton joint seventh on 225.

But, with Terry Brushwood following up his morning round of 70 with a 71 and Dane Bairstow weighing in with a best second-round score of 68, St Ives repeated their first-round total to finish on 436, finishing three shots ahead of Rotherham and nine in front of third-placed Harrogate.

Ilkley were seventh on 448 and Cookridge Hall tenth on 453.

With Brushwood one under and Andy Town and Bairstow two under after five holes, St Ives started the afternoon round strongly, reaching the turn in a collective three under.

Bairstow dropped a shot at the 17th to go to two under, while Town had a bad decision for relief from the match referee on one hole, but stuck to his task, despite a couple of bad lies and awkward approach shots, and was two over coming down the 18th.

Meanwhile, Brushwood had bogies on the 16th and 17th to be one over, meaning the team were now one over and needing a solid finish.

However, Brushwood delivered in style on the 18th, hitting a superb approach shot to within eight feet and sinking an uphill putt for a 71 to go to one-under.

Town's last-hole experience was much trickier as he found himself in the trees to the left and slightly blocked out with no real prospect of reaching the green in two. He managed to punch the ball down the fairway but ran into a bunker 70 yards from the green.

But a good shot got him onto the lower part of the green. He was still facing a 45-foot uphill putt but got within three feet and sank the putt for a par to finish on two-over-par 74.

Bairstow, bringing up the rear, had been under the card all the way round and, after a good drive down the 18th and an approach shot into the green, he faced a very tricky 35-foot, downhill swinging putt.

His putt gathered momentum but slowed down just enough to drop into the centre of the cup for a brilliant eagle and a four-under-par 68, giving St Ives a second-round 213 to go with their morning 223 for a total of four-over-par 436.

As for the other teams, a couple of bad scores had put Ilkley and Wheatley out of contention, leaving Rotherham, who included former England player Matthew Evans, as the only realistic challengers.

Their last man needed a 69 to take the title but Jamie Harrison could only manage a 73, leaving a jubilant St Ives as victors.

St Ives club captain Paul Topham said: "The team was the most focused and determined I have seen them all season, and this has firmly put Bingley St Ives as the top club and team in Yorkshire."

The following night, St Ives were at Bradford Golf Club for their penultimate Scratch League match, beginning the evening six points clear of rivals Northcliffe, who were at Baildon.

Easy wins for Town, Brushwood and Bairstow gave St Ives a 6-2 victory, confirming them as champions for a third straight year, Northcliffe losing their clash by the same score.

Topham added: "Winning the Scratch League was the icing on the cake for the team and the club.

"There is such a buzz at the club at the moment, and we are planning to take a lot of support to the National Team Championships next month."
